However often Bennett may have employed serial techniques or introduced jazz and modern elements into his work his Choral compositions are always tonal and melodic. In A Farewell To Arms he displays an exquisite sensitivity to the poetry of Ralph Knevet (17th century) and George Peele (16th century) and their mediations on the homely life after years spent soldiering. The Cello can be heard to serve as the ‘Voice’ of the old soldier. The music combines the jaggedly Romantic Cello line with Choral writing that suggests early music motifs and harmonies.Composer performer and arranger Richard Rodney Bennett was internationally respected for his serious music and manyaward-winning film scores (Murder on the Orient Express Nicholas and Alexandra) as well as his works for children and his religious pieces. In addition this markedly versatile musician frequently performed as a jazz pianist.

Richard Allain's Night for SATB and Cello. Night Was commissioned by Commotio and recieved its premiere in Merton College Oxford in June 2007 conducted by Matthew Berry and is available on the Herald label (HAVP340). Composer's Note: Given the long phrase lengths of Night it is suggested that choirs Stagger breathing where necessary. The last page of the score requires some explanation. The singers should split into three separate groups: two equal SATB choirs and an SATB solo quartet. Each group sings their own music - each repetition being separated by a long pause - independent of the othergroups. Thus Choir I will begin and as they finish Choir II will commence etc. The music should continue for about two minutes getting gradually quieter with each repetition. Though a common pulse should be kept the groups begin each repetition as they wish: the music should overlap and blur. Against this the solo Cello plays its fragments of melody. The choirs at the conductor's discretion should end in the order they began leaving the cello to play its last notes as the echoes fade. Duration: 20 minutes

Par VAUGHAN WILLIAMS RALPH. Johann Sebastian Bach did not write any cello concertos. Or did he? Many of his music manuscripts disappeared after his death. Included in that lost treasure may have been a couple of cello concertos. Bach wrote six suites for cello and three sonatas for viola da gamba, so, yes, why not a cello or a gamba concerto? Here is the Concerto In F Minor BWV1056 arranged for cello and piano./ Feuillet / SATB

This new edition of Gabriel Fauré's Requiem presents the work in a chamber edition for the first time. Edited and arranged by David Hill for Violin Cello Harp and Organ this score is compatible with the Novello vocal score of the same work and all other major editions. It aims to convey the original chamber-music qualities of Fauré's original scoring and will enhance performances with keyboard reductions at minimal cost. It will be of great use to chamber and church choirs without the budget or space to perform this understated masterpiece with full orchestra yet who wish to convey the rich colours and textures ofFauré's most famous work. Gabriel Faure: Requiem is scored for Violin Cello Harp Organ and SATB voices (for SATB separate parts not included). In order to perform the work choir members would require NOV072304. 'Here is a visionary publication that will solve many problems. Most important this edition will work with existing versions even down to rehearsal marks.' - Andrew Fletcher Organists' Review

Svyati - 'O Holy One' for choir and solo cello. Text in church Slavonic. Quoting Tavener: 'I began to write Svyati in early 1995: while sketching it I learned that John Williams father of Jane my dear friend andpublisher was dying. I could not refrain from dedicating it to Jane and to the memory of her father. The text is in Church Slavonic and it is used at almost every Russian Orthodox service perhaps most poignantly afterthe congregation have kissed the body in an open coffin at an Orthodox funeral. The choir sings as the coffin is closed and borne out of the church followed by the mourners with lighted candles. The cello represents the Priest orIkon of Christ and should play at a distance from the choir perhaps at the opposite end of the building. As is Greek drama choir and priest are in dialogue with each other. Since the cello represents the Ikon of Christ it mustbe played without any sentiment of a Western character but should derive from the chanting of the Eastern Orthodox Church.

POD Vocal Score-St. Mark Passion is a work by John Joubert for two Tenor and three Baritone soloists SATB Chorus Solo Cello and Organ. First performed in Wells Cathedral on Palm Sunday 20th March 2016 by Wells Cathedral Choir it was commissioned by 'Cathedral Commissions' of Wells Cathedral. A full performance lasts around 45 minutes and this is the Vocal Score. 'The work lasts about 45 minutes and rather like the St. Mark Passion by Charles Wood uses various pre-existant hymns to fulfill a similar function to the chorales in Bach's Passions. The scoring of solo Cello and Organ is skillfully handled so that the quasi-recitativenarrations feature both instruments to varying degrees the Cello often taking lead balancing the inevitably greater presence of the Organ in the hymns. Joubert's choice of hymns is impeccable (plainsong Bach Gibbons...) ending with 'When I survey the wondrous cross' and the idiom of the freely composed sections is given consistency through use of a gently undulating motif to accompany Christ's words (reminiscent of the opening of Vaughan William's Symphony no.5) and a chromatic motif in agitated sections (which happens to be the same as Shostakovich's DSCH theme). Although considerable demands are made on the instrumentalists and lead soloists the choral writing is rarely difficult and could be tackled by many choirs; I have no doubt that the work would be extremely effective in performance.' - Geoffrey Webber Choir & Organ Magazine

For SATB choir with Piano accompaniment.'In 2000 the poet Tony Harrison to cheer me up during a troubled period of my life sent me a copy of Goethe?s poem. I began to sketch music for it then and finished it in 2003. It is set for mixed chorus and strings. A winding forlorn cello figure like a lost soul leads to a softer tender violin theme that evokes the healing power of music to the troubled spirit. The hushed chorus enters a cappella and the forlorn cello figure is developed as they describe the illusory nature of the ?splendid? world. The ?healing? theme returns now elaborated by the sopranos and the whole chorus joins them building a sustainedmessage of hope and thanks for the regenerative power of music and love. This short piece is fondly dedicated to my friends Jane and David Fanshawe. It was commissioned by the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus and first performed by them in Poole on 17 April 2004.'????????????????????????????????- Richard Blackford
