Hypochonriacus was written around 1949. It is scored for solo Voice with Piano accompaniment and sets a poem by Charles Lamb. It was a test piece for the National Competitive Music Festival held aspart of the 1951 Festival of Britain.Cecil Armstrong Gibbs was a prolific and versatile English composer of the 20th century. Gibbs is best known for his output of songs but he also wrote a considerableamount of music for the amateur choirs that he conducted. His reputation as a song-writer largely lies in his natural gift for text setting he insisted on giving priority to the words over the music and had very clear musicalideas on what a song should be.

This song is a poignant tribute to Barry's teacher, Stockhausen. It was written for the 2008 Aldeburgh Festival programme book and is a setting of an enigmatic letter about friendship, written by Beethoven in 1821. The song may also be performed as a solo piano piece. / Voix Et Piano

This charming opera satire belongs to the genre of ?metamelodrama? in which the opera itself becomes the subject of the action. The people who are part of an opera production, for example the writer, composer and prima donna, appear as characters on the stage and are presented in a humorous mirror image. In this ?theatre about theatre? Salieri parodies the music from Giuseppe Sarti?s Giulio Sabino in his insert arias, thus playing on the music which was totally familiar with the audience of that time. By reflecting on the musical-dramatic style of that time and discussing whether ?the word? or ?the music? should take priority, this masterpiece is considered to be a forerunner to Richard Strauss?s Capriccio. This substantial cycle was written for the tenor Peter Pears, and first performed by him in 1953 at the Royal Festival Hall, London, with the distinguished pianist Noel Mewton-Wood. It follws the example of Britten's Serenade in setting a variety of poets, and the set is framed by settings of the same words by Goethe in translation by Louis MacNeice, the unifying factor being presumably the quality of the poetry.
