Par BLANKEN JOHN. John Blanken has created a swinging arrangement of the famous Scottish traditional tune Scotland the Brave. The usual version with bagpipes is the best known and there is a similarity in Swingin’ Kilts owing to its long, drone-like tones in the accompaniment. The theme has been rhythmically adapted but it is still easily recognisable. Swingin’ Kilts holds a challenge for every brass band. It makes demands in terms of timing and technique which give this work the bravura feel that will keep the audience as well as the musicians swinging in their seats. / Niveau : 3 / Musique légère originale / Répertoire / Fanfare

In ‘Land of Legends’ German composer Andreas Ludwig (what’s in a name) Schulte takes you along to the fictional world of legends myths and fairy tales. The introduction to the first part (The Castle) describes the majestic contours of the sceneof action. Its instrumentation (horns) immediately makes you imagine being in Medieval spheres. The addition of trenchant copper instruments even gives the part a heroic tinge. After entering through the gate a lot of hustle and bustle appearsto be going on in the courtyard. Pages squires and soldiers are busy attending to their arms. Beer is being brewed flax is being spun cattle are being tended and some craftsmen from neighbouring villages are busily at work. In the upperchamber of the round tower lives an old man (The Old Wizard). He hardly ever comes out and nobody knows exactly what he is doing. It is said that he is engaged in wizardry and magic. It is all very mysterious. There are also festivities some ofthem sober others exuberant. The wedding in the third part is celebrated in a grand manner. With a flourish of trumpets the bride makes her entrance at the hand of her father. Afterwards at the party there is dancing to the music played byminstrels and of course a plentiful banquet follows.

Contrasting colors and varied orchestration techniques make this majestic setting of OH LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM come alive for Christmas. Of the three different tunes that are commonly associated with the original carol text, this arrangement uses the melody that’s best known in England. ENGLISH CAROL FANTASY remains entirely accessible to bands at this level and plenty of cueing makes sure it’s useful for ensembles of all shapes and sizes. Feature your deserving young trumpet section leader on the easy solo, or let the entire first trumpet section play it soli. The low woodwinds and brass also get some “well doubled” exposure, so playing this one will be fun for all. Try it! / Niveau : 2 / Répertoire / Fanfare

‘Music’ by John Miles was one of Blackstone’s favourite numbers. With completely different notes but holding on to the same form and atmosphere the latter has tried to write an attractive composition for both young and old.Gate 11 refers to the ever agitated and noisy scenes at an airport especially during check-in. Yet there are also passengers who wait patiently letting their thoughts range at will looking forward to meeting a loved one at the end of their journey.

Shalom Chaverim is an ancient Hebrew (farewell)song which was originally sung at the end of a celebration or meeting. It was and is mostly sung as a round. Freely translated the words mean ?Goodbye friends goodbye and see you again!?. The varying moods at a parting have been captured very well by Andreas Schulte in his arrangement ?Variations on Shalom Chaverim?. The composer himself says about the song ?Although the melody is in a minor key the overall atmosphere in the song is positive. one wishes each other all the best. Saying goodbye however also hurts. When you slow down the pace of the melody and add ?blue notes? in the harmonies this can be sensed immediately.?Schulte refers here to the first variation. The second variation is very intense with possibly even deeper-felt emotions. ?Variations on Shalom Chaverim? ends on a cheerful and positive note in fast tempo and with oriental elements in the melody: ?L'hitra'ot Shalom? (See you again and farewell!).
