Four
Album Leaves, Op. 28 is a
set of pieces for piano
solo composed by Edvard
Grieg. The set was first
published in 1878 in
Leipzig by C.F. Peters.
The Album Leaves were
composed over the span of
almost fifteen years. As
such, they present a
fascinating cross-section
of Grieg's pianistic and
compositional
development. They are
arranged in chronological
order as follows: Allegro
con moto (1864),
Allegretto espressivo
(1874), Vivace (1876),
and Andantino serioso
(1878).
Having
realized some years ago
that due to
Grieg’s way of
writing for the piano,
that they would fit
wonderfully on two
guitars, I began with
this set, and then moved
onto more of his works,
finally transcribing his
complete set of 10 books
of Lyric Pieces (66
pieces in all), all of
which are available as
separate publications at
Les Productions
D’Oz. I hope
you enjoy playing them as
much as I, and my duet
partner Ann,
do.

se Farrenc was a
profoundly influential
French composer,
performer, professor, and
author. Though she would
ultimately become quite a
sought-after performer,
her potential as a
composer was recognized
quite early on. Women
were not permitted to
enroll in conventional
composition classes at
the Conservatoire de
Paris at the time, but,
she did receive private
lessons from Anton
Reicha, the professor of
composition there. Years
later she would receive a
permanent appointment as
Professor of Piano at the
same institution, a
position she held for
thirty years. She was the
only woman during the
19th century to bear that
title. Her piano
etudes possess
pedagogical value as well
as great beauty and
character. These works
lend themselves quite
well to the guitar duo
setting. While I have
rendered all of
Farrenc’s
melodies quite
faithfully, I have taken
liberties with the
accompaniments in order
to make them more
idiomatic to the guitar.
Likewise, many of the
effects of which the
guitar is capable have
been brought to bear in
ways that deviate from
the original intent of
the etude. Alternatively,
the challenges that some
of these etudes were
meant to address for the
piano student are
amplified by this
adaptation. For example,
etude 5 is intended to
enable the piano student
to improve the
coordination between
their left and right
hands. It certainly
presents a challenge in
that regard to the guitar
duo! These selections
are entirely suitable for
guitarists with limited
experience, though they
could, of course, be
beautifully realized by
players with a great deal
more experience as
well.
You
will find in the scores
indications of nuances,
timbre, attack and
fingerings which
constitute suggestions
for work and not
prescriptions. Teachers
and students are
therefore invited to make
interpretation choices
different from those
proposed or to try to
convincingly render those
already
written.
The
pieces were composed or
arranged by UQAM music
education students as
part of a course aimed at
equipping musicians for
teaching guitar in the
school system. Many of
them are musicians from
different backgrounds
(composition,
performance, world music,
etc.), which explains the
creativity found in the
pieces. All the pieces
have been the subject of
an audio recording
available on the
Productions
d’Oz website
and on YouTube. Search

I. Gurdjieff, born in
Caucasus at the border
between Armenia and
Turkey, developed a
theory which is supposed
to mediate between the
esoteric knowledge of the
East and the scientific
thinking of the West. In
collaboration with the
Russian composer Thomas
de Hartmann, he created a
series of piano
compositions in which
melodies from Far Eastern
religions are included.
Now, some of these works
have been arranged for
two guitars for the first
time since this is
suggested by the
relationship of the
guitar to Asian plucked
instruments, such as the
lute or 'tar', for tonal
reasons. Thus, the
clarity and power of this
music is expressed in a
delicate and colourful
way.

The Cimarosa
Sonatas represent a chest
of melodic ideas in which
the Neapolitan universe
of contrasts takes shape,
where freshness sometimes
alternates tender
melancholy and heartfelt
sadness that have always
been the counterpart in
the culture of that city.
Domenico Cimarosa was one
of the most prominent
opera composers of the
late 18th century. He is
a transitional figure
between the generation of
classical operas of the
second half of the 18th
century (e.g., Gluck and
Mozart), and the later
generation of early 19th
century Italian composers
such as Rossini and
Donizetti. The work of
Jorge MartÃÂnez
Zárate as a composer
and transcriber is vast,
he has written original
works for one and two
guitars and has made more
than a thousand
transcriptions, a large
number of them have been
published in Argentina
and also in the United
States, France and
Italy.

Padre Antonio
Soler is the most
important Spanish
composer of keyboard
instruments of the XVIII
century. Born in Olot he
was baptized in 1729 and
died in El Escorial in
1787. As a young boy he
entered the Escolania of
Montserrat, where he
studied composition and
organ, coinciding at the
same monastery with the
also Spanish composer of
that time, Fernando Sor.
Padre Soler spent great
part of his life in El
Escorial as chapel master
and organist and met in
Madrid Italian composer
Domenico Scarlatti with
whom he developped a deep
friendship inspired on
mutual
admiration.
In
spite of the similar
styles of both composers
the fluid inspiration of
Padre Soler excels for
his own personality,
definitely influenced by
Spanish roots.
Furthermore, I ask myself
if the fact of being at
the same monastery of
Montserrat with guitarist
composer Fernando Sor
didn't play an important
role in the future
development of Padre
Soler's style.
I
have transcribed for two
guitars these three
sonatas in the hope that
also the guitarists can
enjoy playing these
little jewels, truly
musical delights, that
Padre Antonio Soler left
for us.

The
composition of the work
began as a few
improvisational thoughts
on a short phrase from a
Beethoven piano sonata,
which eventually
developed into a
six-minute fantasia that
ultimately bears little
audible relation to the
original Beethoven
phrase. The work is in
four sections, of which
the first and last are
nocturnal, prelude, and
postlude respectively.
The main second section
grows from a simple
imitative idea to a
chordal climax that
subsides into a chorale
and soliloquy which is
elegiac in nature.
