Along with Piano music song is Reynaldo Hahn's (1874-1947) preferred genre: with his light Baritone voice the young prodigy conquered Parisian salons by singing the works of his favourite composers (Gounod Massenet Fauré) not to mention his own compositions which enchanted audiences. Though finely wrought these songs have a naturalness which continues to please as evidenced by the success of the first two volumes. For many this third volume will be a revelation since it assembles for the first time songs that were published separately in magazines. Des Knaben Wunderhorn was an assemblage of folksongs and folksong-style poems collected and adapted in 1805 and 1808 by poets to reflect their concept of German folk poetry. In 1887 Mahler discovered the musical potential of this collection and over the next 14 years it provided him with most of his song texts.In addition to Mahler's 23 songs on Wunderhorn texts this compilation contains his settings of five poems by Friedrich Ruckert.
