for Flute Choir. Par BRAHMS JOHANNES. The Symphony No. 2 of Johannes Brahms was composed in 1877, premiered in December of that year. The Allegretto grazioso (3rd movement), arranged here for flute choir, is reminiscent of the Slavonic Dances of Antonin Dvorak. The flute orchestra version is arranged for six C flute parts, two alto flutes, two bass flutes and a contrabass flute. Increasing the number of players in each section will give added depth to the full and rich sound of this arrangement. / Date parution : 2022-11-29/ Répertoire / Ensemble de Flûtes

Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738) is regarded as one of the last great harp-players of Ireland and seems to be surrounded by an almost mystical aura. Numerous anecdotes exist which testify to a strong personality and a tremendous musical talent as well as enormous self-confidence. Unlike any other he knew how to combine old Irish music with Italian Baroque music creating numerous compositions about 200 of which have survived. 16 of them have been chosen and arranged by Patrick Pf??? for the delightful instrumentation of two Flutes and Alto Flute.Content:O'Carolan's ConcertoLady GethinJohn JamesonBlind MaryJohnDrury (Second Air)Colonel O'HaraCharles O'ConorO'Carolans Farewell to Music - O'Hara's CupThomas Leixlip the ProudMadam MaxwellReceipt for DrinkingPrincess RoyalMrs. Garvey (First Air)Lament for Owen Roe O'NeillMichael O'Connor (First Air)

Par COHEN JONATHAN. Grow As A River for Flute Choir, by Jonathan Cohen. Composed for DCFlutes in celebration of their 10th Anniversary. This piece describes the life of a river from inception to maturity. It begins with tenuous drops from melting ice, slowly forming into a brook that playfully dances around rocks and over bumps until it becomes a majestic and peaceful flow. The idyll is shattered by a raging waterfall, the erratic motion and anarchy and terror are gradually replaced by the exhilaration and then peace of motion and arrival. Finally, there is proud celebration in the power and accomplishment and future of the fully mature river. / Date parution : 2022-11-29/ Répertoire / Ensemble de Flûtes

Par MAGALIF EUGENE. Ave Maria for Flute Choir by Eugene Magalif. From the composer: 'The creation of a new Ave Maria requires a certain amount of courage from composers. There are many versions of Ave Maria in the world and it is very risky to compete with Schubert, Bach or Caccini (Vavilov). I did not begin to compose another aria, but composed a polyphonic version, in which the intertwining voices, harmony, unusual rhythm changes and a wide palette of shades play the main role. My Ave Maria turned out to be very unusual, but if you follow my instructions of tempo, dynamic shades, perform it very gently and without forcing the sound, then the piece will show its beauty.' / Date parution : 2022-11-29/ Répertoire / Ensemble de Flûtes

Par LEMMENS JACQUES-NICOLAS. Fanfare by Belgian composer Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens, arranged for Flute Choir by Matt Johnston. Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens (1823?1881) is a composer unfamiliar to most, unless you happen to be either an organist, or a Belgian (or a Belgian organist!). At the age of 26, he was appointed organ teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels with two of his most accomplished students being Alexandre Guilmant and Charles-Marie Widor. In 1879 he founded a school for church music in Mechelen, Belgium, which would later bear his name upon moving to Leuven in 1968. The Lemmensinstituut has since broadened its curriculum beyond church music and is a prominent, award-winning music conservatory. This Fanfare of Lemmens is an organ piece popular to play as a postlude or as a wedding recessional. / Date parution : 2022-11-29/ Répertoire / Ensemble de Flûtes

Par VIA KELLY. This Meditation on 'Abide With Me' by Kelly Via was written for the West Michigan Flute Orchestra, under the direction of Julie Sooy. Although originally conceived just prior to the pandemic in early 2020, the melody and words became even more important as our daily lives began to change with the spread of the virus around the world. As the son of a minister, traditional hymns were a big part of the composer's life. Included in this work are a number of meter changes, counter melodies and harmonies that are atypical to this well-known hymn. / Date parution : 2022-11-29/ Répertoire / Ensemble de Flûtes

Par VERDI GIUSEPPE. Othello (or Otello) is an opera in four acts composed by Giuseppe Verdi, premiered in February 1887. As was customary at the time, a short ballet sequence was composed for the opera, to be inserted into Act III, just prior to the entrace of Lodovico, ambassador to the Venetian Republic. When Verdi sent the original manuscript to his publisher Ricordi, he included this detailed description of the scenario: 'Looking at the splendid, colonnaded scene of the Third Act, I decided to make the music go as follows: At the very beginning, to the sound of horns, a group of Turkish slave-girls dance with reluctance and ill-humor because of the very fact they are slaves. Then, hearing the strains of the Arab Song, they grow livelier and at the end dance quite wildly... At the Invocation to Allah, they all fall to the ground... Just then a group of beautiful Greek girls appears among the columns, and four measures later another similar group; at the thirteenth measure these two groups join in a quiet, aristocratic, classical dance. The next motif is that of La Muranese, which heralds the appearance of a 'group' (!) of Venetians... Eight measures later, another group of Venetians enters and at the eighteenth measure (fortissimo) these two groups meet and dance at the front of the stage. After the fortissimo there is a passage of very light music in F-sharp, which should be danced by couples. This motif is repeated, louder, and then all the Venetians dance together. The 6/8 motif reappears, and here I should like to see another group of Venetians come forward. The War Song should be danced by men alone. At the recurrence of the first motif, all the Venetians dance again, then at the più mosso, Venetians, Turks, Greeks, and the rest all dance together... Amen.' / Date parution : 2022-11-29/ Répertoire / Ensemble de Flûtes

For Sophie Dufeutrelle Professor of Flute at the Ecole Nationale de Musique de Villeurbanne an intense pedagogical activity goes hand in hand with composition an area in which she has received several commissions from esteemed soloists such as Maxence Larrieu and Philippe Bernold. Written in 2002 for a Flute Orchestra of around 20 instruments (from the Piccolo to the Octobass) Marine belongs to a tradition cherished by painters since the 16th century: the maritime landscape. The 1st movement (Mist) opens onto a lengthy section largely dedicated to improvisation in the spirit of Walter Thompson’s soundpainting: using fingermovements the conductor signs to the musicians the type of motif (calm sea swell whistling buoys seagulls and fishing boats) that will insert itself ad libitum between two lines of waves. The 2nd movement more traditional floats a Song of heartbreaking melancholy followed by a light lively Dance that swirls the heart into joyful eddies. Written for intermediate-level flautists (with one part reserved for beginners) this piece with its variety of atmospheres concludes on a high note – in the joy of making music together!

Par COHEN JONATHAN. 'Blueshift Red' was commissioned by the West Michigan Flute Orchestra, Julie Sooy, director. From the composer: ?We have all experienced a noisy vehicle going by rapidly and hearing a raised pitch as the vehicle approaches and a lowered pitch as it recedes. This Doppler shift manifests itself in light, as well: light from stars approaching us has its frequency raised, shifting it to the blue end of the spectrum; light from receding stars is shifted to the red. The title, then, refers to something passing quickly.' / Date parution : 2022-11-29/ Répertoire / Ensemble de Flûtes

Par COLERIDGE-TAYLOR SAMUEL. Danse Nègre, from the African Suite by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, arranged for flute choir by Paige Dashner Long. Coleridge spent his childhood in Croydon, Surrey, England, where he studied violin with his grandfather and also sang in the church choir. At 15, he was accepted to the Royal College of Music, where during his second year, he changed his major from violin to composition. At the age of 20, he met the African-American poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, who encouraged him to focus on his African heritage. As a result, Coleridge composed his African Suite for piano in 1898, each of the four movements depicting different African experiences. / Date parution : 2022-11-29/ Répertoire / Ensemble de Flûtes

Par JOPLIN SCOTT. The Ragtime Dance by Scott Joplin originated as a short ragtime folk ballet, accompanied by narration and choreography. It was first performed in 1899, but because of hesitation concerning the marketability of such a work, it was not published until 1902. As was feared, it was a commercial failure, however this led to a later 1906 publication in a solo piano arrangement. It is this piano solo version which has been arranged here for flute choir by Shaul Ben-Meir.

Livre
