Schubert's Sonata In A Minor subtitled Arpeggione was written in 1824 and was inspired by an instrument invented by Mr. Georg Staufer which Schubert referred to as an Arpeggione. The instrument was a mixture of a Guitar and a Cello and was held between the knees like a Cello but had frets on the fingerboard like a Guitar. This edition of the work has been wonderfully arranged for Flute and Piano by Peter Lukas Graf.

The Romance for a melodic instrument and Piano was a very popular genre in French salon music of the nineteenth century. Saint-Saëns also wrote several such pieces for Violin Cello and Horn. His only Romance for Flute was composed in 1871 shortly after the Société nationale de musique had been founded. It was premiered in this new forum for Piano music and chamber works a year later too. In spite of its brevity the piece contains numerous harmonic and melodic refinements which rapidly made it popular among flautists both in the original setting with Piano accompaniment as well as in the later orchestral version. The Henle Urtext edition is the firstcritical edition of this piece which is also very popular with learners of the Flute.

Created in 1943 as part of the four exam pieces for the Paris Conservatoire this charming Sonatine for Flute and Piano is part of the early works of Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) a French Composer following the paths of Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy. Even though the composer was later quite critical about it this Sonatine which lasts 9 minutes is the most recorded of his compositions and has become a standard in the flute repertoire. Composed of three movements it begins with a tempo “Allegretto” followed by a part more “Andante” and finishes with a cadence “Animé”. Henri Dutilleux was internationally acclaimed for his work winning prizes such as the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the UNESCO's International Rostrum of Composers among many others. His work also includes sonatas for piano and for oboe two symphonies the cello concerto Tout un monde lointain (A whole distant world) the violin concerto L'arbre des songes (The tree of dreams) and the string quartet Ainsi la nuit (Thus the night).

Cyril Scott was an English composer writer and poet. He was essentially a late romantic composer whose style was at the same time strongly influenced by impressionism. His harmony was notably exotic. Scott wrote around four hundred works which include two mature symphonies three operas three Piano concertos concertos for Violin Cello Oboe and Harpsichord several overtures four oratorios as well as a mass of chamber music. While less appreciated during his lifetime it is Scott’s late works(written between 1950 and his death) that are the most individual with their ever-shifting harmoniccolours and wayward inflections of phrase and mood capturing perfectly the way the mind shifts backwards and forwards between reminiscence regrets and self-assertion.Composed in 1961 for Flute and Piano and premiered by William Bennett and Margaret Norman on November 9 of that year Sonata For Flute is perfect example of the genius of Scott’s late works.

Now seen as part of the 19th century aesthetic primacy of 'Bel Canto' great works for voice were frequently arranged for solo instruments a practice that became increasingly popular as the tone and capabilities of the instruments could draw performers ever closer to the characteristics of the human voice.Performer and composer Leopold Jansa originally arranged Schubert's celebrated Winterreise for Violin and Piano with alternative parts for Flute and Cello. This edition presents Jansa's complete Flute version in ten movements with the full original Piano accompaniment.

Description The 'Sonata d'arpeggione' was originally written for the guitarre d'amour or arpeggione - a kind of enlarged guitar that could be bowed cello-style. The instrument did not survive longer than a few years, but this piece by Schubert is a lovely reminder. This edition is transcribed for flute by James Galway and edited by Phillip Moll for the Great Performer's Edition series. The opening Allegro Moderato is built around a wistful melody. A second theme proceeds in gentle gusts of semiquavers (the arpeggione could not play fast notes with much volume at all, and so the Sonata's quicker portions are almost always marked piano or pianissimo). The Adagio is a rich but introverted musing on an almost hymn-like subject, at the end Schubert invites the soloist to improvise a brief transition into the final, multi-sectioned Allegretto . Songlist Sonata (Per Arpeggione)

Composer's NoteOut Of The Cool was my first work and inspired by the music of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. It was originally written for the flute but may equally well be played on the violin cello or sopranosaxophone. The piece is in three sections - slow/fast/slow. I have not marked many dynamics or phrasings and those shown are suggestions only. The slow sections in particular should be very free rhythmically and eachperformer should feel free to interpret the piece in his own way. The pedalling marks however are more specific as I have used them to show how notes and chords are to be sustained. Some of the blurred effects may seem strangeat first but this pedalling is essential to the style of the piece. Above all Out Of The Cool was written to be enjoyed so have fun with it!David Heath.
