Used and endorsed by numerous college percussion programs, Reading Mallet Percussion Music by Rebecca Kite provides a solid foundation in the scales, arpeggios, and melodic patterns necessary for percussionists to get up to speed quickly in reading music in bass and treble clef. Kite has recorded each page of music which includes 30 technique exercises (more than three hours of music), that is included on the play-along CD. Students will hear what the music sounds like on the marimba and play along with Kite as they practice! There is also a special emphasis on developing speed reading techniques that gives each learner a fast track to reading fluency. The first two sections of the book contain original etudes by Rebecca Kite, written specifically for developing music reading music skills. Especially notable are the illustrations of the marimba keyboard with either a note or scale darkened so the student can identify them on the marimba on which they are playing. The music, all of which is composed for a four-octave marimba, is clearly written with large noteheads that will help the beginner in learning to read. The third section of the book contains thirty classic melodies that are presented in increasing difficulty and are arranged to use the entire four octave keyboard (including reading bass clef). The final section contains 30 technical exercises for two mallets for developing the skill to play the material in the book. For 2 mallets, 4.0 octave marimba. Here is what percussion teachers are saying about this book: 'Reading Mallet Percussion Music is an excellent book, well-written and organized for easy comprehension,' ---John Beck, Eastman School of Music (retired). 'Your two-mallet reading book is absolutely brilliant, and is now a required resource in my curriculum.' ---Kurt Gartner, Kansas State University. / Percussions

Score of Rolf Wallin's Stonewave for solo Percussion. Composer's Notes:The last few years I have become increasingly involved in some peculiar mathematical formulas called 'fractals'. These formulas used inthe fast growing field of 'Chaos theory' are relatively simple but they generate fascinating and surprisingly 'organic' patterns when shown graphically on a computer screen or played as music. One should think that such amathematical approach would lead to sterile and 'theoretical' music. The sound world of 'Stonewave' however is not one you would associate with math books. The steady insistent pulse and the use of sequences put squarely upagainst each other or divided by long rests suggest an invisible ritual. A ritual for what? Well then let it be a ritual for the exorcism of some 'evil spirits' which now ride our part of the world under the name ofLiberalism making people the servants of the Market Forces instead of vice versa.'Stonewave' is therefore an incantation as it seems that only divine forces can save European culture from a political system that proclaimsthe Jungle Law as the guiding principle in social and cultural life. Per Nørgård I CHING Programme Note I CHING (1982) for Percussion Solo I. Thunder Repeated: The Image of Shock (hexagram no. 51) II. The Taming Power of the Small - 9 sounds (hexagram no. 9) III. The Gentle the Penetrating (hexagram no. 57) IV. Towards Completion: Fire over Water (hexagram no. 64) I Ching (The Book of Changes) four movements for solo percussion was written in 1982 and dedicated to the Danish percussionist Gert Mortensen. I Ching is the thousand-year-old Chinese oracle book whose 64 combinations of six 'Yang' or 'Yin' lines (bright or dark) represent 64 different states of being for all living things includinghuman beings. The 64 states of being should be thought of as an eternal hidden cycle which lies behind everything that we do: for example the supreme the enthusiastic initiative (combination or 'hexagram' no. 1 the creative) or the despair of the moment the warm and friendly and so on. The states of being exist on all levels - the official the private etc. - at the same time in many speeds. From these I selected four the sequence of which progresses from a situation from which there is apparently no solution to a (temporary) relief. In the first movement ´Thunder repeated the Image of Shock´ a vicious circle of claustrophobic closed circuits is represented by the tom-tom part. This is followed by tam-tams and wood sounds but returns full-circle to the tom-toms. The second movement ´The taming Power of the small´has its origins in the violence of the first movement but this time lets it resolve in a long glide upwards which stars with voice sounds ´borrowed´from the Beatles´´Revolution no 9´which are then transmitted to the other instruments. The third movement is ´The Gentle The Penetrating´in which lyrical poetry dominates with gentle bell-like sounds and delicate tunes. Finally the sovereign many-layered world of rhythm triumphs in the fourth movement: ´Towards Completion. Fire over

Akrodha meaning ‘freedom from anger’ in Sanskrit was commissioned for international Percussion soloist Jonny Axelsson and written in 1998. Of this work composer Volans says ‘What would appear as a fairly moderate piece forKeyboard is amplified a hundredfold in difficulty and effect when translated into drum music…I had it turned out written an unspeakably difficult piece.’ The sheet music includes specific instructions on instrumentation andtonality ‘A pentatonic or diatonic scale is to be avoided’ though it is clear that the performer has some leeway to make his own choices of elements to create the sounds.Kevin Volans is a twentieth century composer andpianist who was born in South Africa and has had a variety of inspirational experiences including time spent studying with Karlheinz Stockhausen association with the New Simplicity movement research into African music andmany non-musical friendships and influences. Some of his most celebrated work have been his String quartets.
