Pour voix moyenne ou grave et piano-?For as long as there are poets there will be songs. If someone was to put on my tomb: ?Here lies Francis Poulenc musician to Apollinaire and Éluard?: that really would be my finest claim to fame ? the composer declared in 1945. Right from boyhood his attraction to poetry was practically equal to his love of music. And in fact the young Poulenc took to song-writing quite naturally starting in 1919. Poulenc compiled a catalogue of 150 songs a body of works of consistently high quality containing great diversity that marks him out as the last major exponent in this genre. This volume is a selection of Poulenc?s best-known titles in both original and transposed key for highand low voice with new engravings it includes original poems and English translation. This edition belongs to ?Musique vocale française? a series devoted to French vocal repertoire both in original and transposed key designed for students and teachers as well as professionals.

The Boosey Voice Coach is an entirely new concept in vocal training. Not a self-teaching manual, and not filled with off-putting diagrams, this series is a wholly practical guide to singing - learning about technique and interpretation through the repertoire itself. Each volume is devoted to singing in one particular language or to singing in a specific context, such as musical theatre or oratorio. In each volume of the series, works from the vocal canon have been selected specifically by Mary King for their technical and musical challenges. Each piece is discussed at length, starting with the words ('Text' - including a literal translation as appropriate), moving to general advice about how the song might be approached ('Notes'), and then addressing the technical difficulties the music presents ('Skills'). Expressed in clear language, Mary King's approach is direct, practical and not limited to one particular teaching method. Any student will find that these books enrich and complement their vocal studies.German can seem like an awkward language to sing in - there are just too many consonants! How do you get your tongue around them? And there are lots of regional differences in accent: is there a 'correct' pronunciation? What exactly is an Umlaut? These issues and more are covered in this book, which contains settings from some of the masters of song-writing in the German language. / Voix Moyenne Et Piano

Frank Bridge’s Three Songs for Medium Voice Viola and Piano is the second volume in a 30-volume series by The Frank Bridge Trust in association with Thames Publishing celebrating the works of Frank Bridge. This publication features the songs Far far from each other Where is it that our soul doth go? and Music when soft voices die and includes the score for Viola separately making the collaboration of the three musicians easier. The songs can be and often are performed together as a cycle but also work as short individual pieces. The first performance of the three songs in December 1908 marked a rareoccurrence as Frank Bridge played the Piano part himself. Far far from each other is the most ambitious of the three pieces for all three musicians. The words are excerpts from Matthew Arnold’s ‘Empedocles on Etna and Other Poems Parting’.Where is it that our soul doth go? is the shortest of the three songs and the words are a translation of the last stanza of Heinrich Heine’s Clarisse translated by K. F. Kroeker. While the first two songs are original settings Bridge first wrote Music when soft voices die for High Voice Piano and Cello in 1903. The present version was transcribed in 1907. Music when soft voices die the short poem providing the words for this piece is one of the most influential and well-known of Shelley’s works.Watch Three Songs performed by Rebecca Ringle (Mezzo-Soprano) Luke Fleming (Viola) and Roger Steptoe (Piano):

Lennox Berkeley's I Carry Your Heart With Me for medium Voice and Piano.'Sometime in 1970 I gave Lennox Berkeley a volume of poems by the American poet E. E. Cummings (1894-1962) since mysister Meriel Dickinson and I were commissioning him towrite a song-cycle for a whole programme of settings of Cummings. At the time he became involved with Chinese poetry and we were delighted with the Chinese Songs Op. 78.However a year or so later in July 1972 Berkeley did set a poem by Cummings. This was ‘i carry your heart with me’ from 95 Poems (1958) and he dedicated the song to the countertenorTay Cheng Jim.The manuscript leavesfew questions. Obviously the pedal sustains the sextuplet and triplet groups at the start and finish. It is possible that all the As in bar 32 of the left hand piano part should be flat although there are clashes like thiselsewhere. A few phrase-marks have been added on existing patterns.' - Peter Dickinson

Six Poetic Songs-Donald Swann is best known as one half of the comic duo Flanders and Swann who dominated the West End and Broadway stages in the late 1950s and 1960s. Though less recognised he was also a leading exponent of the lyric song having reinterpreted the English art-song tradition exemplified by Parry Quilter Warlock and others in his own distinctive and exotic way. This second volume of his songs for Medium Voice and Piano features a range of styles and moods that fit with the diversity of the poems he has set and demonstrate his sensitivity to the setting of texts to music. These Practical Versions of Swann’s ever evolving songs are a wonderful insight into thecomposer’s ability and justify his place in the canon of English song.

Elgar was pre-eminently the composer of large forms. Complex lengthy development of musical ideas was for him a measure of genius. His songs with the exception of the orchestral cycle Sea Pictures were not often the vehicles for his most striking ideas. Paradoxically he was also bedevilled by a fine literally taste. He once told a friend that he felt it better to set the best second-rate poetry to music for the most immortal verse is music already. Some of his songs are therefore settings of poets now all but forgotten such as Arthur Salmon and Gilbert Parker: to their verse his music might make a vital addition. Elgar's songs offer authentic Edwardianreflections which we can value now in their own terms. These songs are full of echoes of a master's thoughts - and especially in the songs written for the stage - flashes of his genius.

It could be argued that Geoffrey Bush's most characteristic music is for voices: stage-works choral pieces and solo songs. With a natural affinity for a wide range of texts (from Chaucer to Stevie Smith via Jonson Wilde and Virginia Woolf) - his music always serves to embellish and illuminate the given word.

Mittlere Stimme / Medium Voice-As a continuation of the new Urtext edition of the Schubert lieder Walther Dürr has now edited volume five for high medium and low voices. Volumes 1 to 4 of this edition contain mainly lieder which Schubert himself saw into print (in his own choice and order) and in the fourth volume works from the last two years of his life are included. The lieder in volume 5 onwards are strictly presented in the order of Deutsch's Thematic Catalogue which means that in principle they are arranged chronologically. The lieder in volume five were composed in the years 1811 to 1814. The first 'Hagars Klage' (D 5) dated 30 March 1811 is also his first complete surviving song. Thefirst eleven lieder are evidence of his early studies (1811 1813/14). During this period Schubert immersed himself in Johann Rudolf Zumsteeg's ballads and lieder and wrote Italian arias during his composition lessons with Antonio Salieri. He also composed a single strophic song ('Klaglied' D 23) which the only one of these songs was published shortly after his death in November 1830 as op. 131 3. His apprentice work as it were was the major ballade 'Der Taucher' (D 77) which was composed between 1813 and roughly the beginning of 1815. Probably not by chance his first complete opera ('Des Teufels Lustschloss' D 84) was written at the same time. He also set fourteen poems by Friedrich von Matthisson exploring the principle of the strophic lied.- Excellent new engraving based on the 'New Schubert Edition'- Foreword by Walther Dürr discussing the history the works? compositionand transmission together with a list of sources for each song (Ger/Eng)- English translation of the song texts by Richard WigmoreContents:Hagars Klage D 5 / Leichenfantasie D 7 /Der Vatermörder D 10 / Klaglied op. post. 131 3 D 23 / Misero pargoletto D 42 (high voice only) / Totengräberlied D 44 / Die Schatten D 50 / Verklärung D 59 / Pensa che questo istante D 76 (medium and low voice only) /Der Taucher D 77 / Son fra l?onde D 78 (high voice only) /Adelaide D 95 / Trost.
