For over ten years he has been writing works in a wide variety of genres for the „BlechReiz BrassQuintett“ ensemble, in which he himself plays trumpet and piano. His field of expertise ranges from classical pieces to jazz and meditative music—and even to pop-oriented compositions. While honing his skills in ear-training and composition at the Mozarteum, Salzburg, Nico became acquainted with a wide repertoire of works as a trumpet player with the Munich Symphony Orchestra, The Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Bavarian State Opera, all of which have influenced his writing style. Victor Caussinus wrote two versions of Air varié, a concertante piece for ophicleide and orchestra: one for an instrument in C and symphonic orchestra, the other one for an instrument in B b and concert band. The piece belongs to the theme and variation genre. After an andante Introduction in minor, the theme is stated and followed by three variations and a Polacca. After a brief return of the Andante, the piece ends with a virtuoso Finale.The arrangement for euphonium or saxhorn and piano is adapted from the original manuscript of the concert band version, the instrumentation of which calls for: '1 piccolo in D b, 1 soprano clarinet in E b, 4 clarinets in B b (including one solo), 2 bassoons, 2 cornets in A b, 2 horns in E b, 2 horns in B b, 2 trumpets in E b, 3 trombones, 1 ophicleide in B b?. / Tuba Et Piano

One of the earliest of Sparke's fantastic works for euphonium, the 'Fantasy' features lyrical and technical passages including some triple tonguing. The work alternates an atmospheric recitative with a driving allegro section. It has quickly become a standard in the repertoire.An atmospheric 'Lento' sets the scene for a folk-like theme from the soloist with an almost Scottish feel, which is freely played over a drone. This leads to an 'Allegro giusto,' still based on the opening motif of a minor 3rd which unifies the whole piece. The material is neo-classical initially until a freewheeling and fragmentary second subject appears. A slow middle section follows requiring warm expressive playing, before a recapitulation of the 'recit' and the 'Allegro giusto' bring this fine miniature to a close. / Euphonium Et Brass Band
