The optional cued notes open the piece up to larger ensembles while the use ofthe well-known hymn Rejoice Ye Pure in Heart gives directors an option to incorporate congregational participation. Ideal as a worship opener this anthem could also be easily used for mass choirs and festival use.

Composer's Program Note Repertoire operas occationally have orchestral suites: Bits and pieces of overture interlude etc. tied upin a bouquet of 'schönste Tränen'. Contemporary opera usually wither after the first season so the focusis on getting people to come and have a sniff before it's too late. Consequently it seemed obvious to meto start making orchestral excerpts from my operas that are meant to be played before the premiere (andafter please); I call them 'opera trailers' when they're substantial enough to be considered independent works and 'opera demos' when they're relatively short and moreappetizer-ish. SNOW WHITE'S MIRROR is a full scale two act dramatic opera written for the Danish National Opera. The opera is a modern re-telling for grown-ups of the brothers Grimm's fairy tale: Snow White is a self-centered teenage narcissist and the villain of the opera; she ends up loosing everyone but herself either because she kills them or because they decide they can't stand being around her anymore. But apparently she's o.k. with that...The music is intended for a large audience: it's basically pop music done with all the craftmanship of aclassical composer who's equally at home with large scale symphonic form avantgarde technique opera singing - and modern pop. The Trailer is in three movements. It contains three sections of the opera; the prelude an interlude close to the beginning of the second act and the final scene but one. It's a gloomy sort of trailer starting out in grand title sequence style moving on to a decidedly odd piece where Snow White find her way to the dwarfs (who're creepy junkies doing pornography to get money to buy dope) and ending in kind of an eerie rejection mood: Everyone still alive walks out on Snow White singing 'skin as white as snow hands red with blood soul as black as ivory'.(NM 2010)

Parts are for hire: hire@ewh.dk Preface / Programme Note INCONTRI is a kind of orchestral prelude presenting some of the orchestra’s timbral possibilities. The timbres of the instrument groups emerge either clear on their ownor in various blends. There are no doublings between the three main groups – winds strings and percussion – each group maintains its own individual character evenduring the encounters; as in a forest where different kinds of birds continuetheirterritorial song without yielding or altering their signals. The joint musical project is not unlike a Baroque concerto grosso not only in theway the form plays the groups off against each other but also in the musical language itself. I have previously written a concerto grosso which I called ”Jungle Baroque” becauseof its savage and wild sounds. The same thing can be said about INCONTRI – bydegrees. Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen

The opera takes place on the remote tropical island of Honga-Tonga where a mayor form Europe is taking a much needed holiday as far away as possible from his home town Utopiaville. London No. 12-Joseph Haydn's 'Eulenburg Pocket Score' is the result of his second trip to England in 1794. This work is one of the still popular from the series of the so-called '12 London Symphonies' (Hob. 1/93 - Hob. 104).The work characterized by musical finesse and various sonic stimuli has the following four movements: I. Adagio - Allegro - II. Allegretto (C major) - III. Menuet: Moderato - IV. Presto. The somewhat unusual epithet 'military symphony' refers essentially to the second and the fourth movement ('Allegretto' and 'Presto') in which the instrumentation is enriched by timpani triangle cymbals and bass drum and thereby the evokes the impression of amilitary band. A 'trumpet signal' especially set in the second movement led to such a characterization. On the value and importance of this G major Symphony the following article from the Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung of April 1799 reveals: 'It is a little less learned and easier to grasp than some of the other's newest works but new ones Ideas just as rich as they. Perhaps the surprise in music can not be furthered than it is here by the sudden collapse of full Janissary music in the minor of the second movement-since until then one has no suspicion that these Turkish instruments are attached to the symphony. But here too not only the inventive but also the prudent artist shows. Nevertheless the Andante is nevertheless a whole: for in all the pleasing and easy things that the composer in order to infer from the idea of his coup deceitfully brought it into the first part of it it is nevertheless arranged and worked in a march.' The 'Military Symphony' was premiered on March 31 1799 in London.

Poul Ruders' Handel Variations for Orchestra (2009) -Ninety Symphonic Reflections on Eight Bars by Georg Friedrich Handel.Commissioned by and dedicated to the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra in celebration of their 75th anniversary 2010. Premiered by The Aarhus Symphony Orchestra conducted by Giancarlo Andretta at the Aarhus Concert Hall 14 January 2010. Programme noteThe short feisty Bourrée from Handel´s famous Water Music (First Suite in F major) has for some years been hovering at the back of my mind as possessing the perfectpotential for a series of variations. Not unlike the short 'morsel' by Henry Purcell (the witches Ho-ho-ho-chorus from the opera Dido and Aeneas) which kicks off the ten variations of my orchestral work Concerto in Pieces the music per se is not particularly interesting but it nevertheless grows on you and is difficult to get rid of. It is merely a handful of sequences (a technique much used in the Baroque era - a method in which the same motif is being shifted up and down in a specified order). Actually it is only the first eight bars of the Bourrée which I haul through the wringer. It would be obvious to assume that Handel Variations make up a sequel to Concerto in Pieces but in spite of the similarity in character between the two chosen themes the Handel Variations are far more symphonically coherent. There are no less than ninety (!) variations and each variation (they are relatively short ranging from four up to forty-something bars) runs seamlessly into the next creating a huge symphonic body of constantly changing colours. I set out with the original theme without interfering but the 'erosion' begins to gnaw away at the theme already from the first variation. Imagine a vast gallery of Handel portraits in which Georg Friedrich appears at first fully recognizable but then the 'disfiguration' sets in and

New Edition of the Complete Works V/5. Par SCHUBERT FRANZ. In addition to his symphonies, Franz Schubert also wrote and handed down to posterity a total of eight finished concert overtures (two of them in two versions) between ca. 1811 and 1819. With the exception of the “Overture in D” (D 4) to the comedy “Der Teufel als Hydraulicus” (“The Devil as Engineer”) and the “Overture in D” (D 26), whose original title was cut out of the manuscript, they are all compositions which are associated neither with a drama nor a programme. They thus embody the type of the pure concert overture at an astonishingly early point in the history of music and are also in keeping with this terminologically by virtue of explicitly not having any other appellations whatsoever in the title: the epithet common for two works “in the Italian style” was only added posthumously.
Our volume sees publication for the first time of the “Italian Overture in C” (D 591) in its two authentic versions, this being in contrast to the performance tradition based on a potpourri of the sources. The widely handed-down but corrupted musical course of the “Overture in D” (D 590) has likewise been rectified for the first time.
Overshadowed by his symphonies, Schubert’s overtures have hitherto been largely undervalued both in their reception and in musical practice – including the “Overture in E minor” (D 648), which sees Schubert venturing into radically new spheres of expression to a greater extent than in virtually any other of his works./ Recueil / Orchestre

Orchestral work commissioned by the BBC and premiered by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Andrew Davis The Barbican Hall November 1992.Quoting Lindberg: 'After having written a Piano Concerto in 1991preceded by three works for different orchestral effectives (Kinetics Marea and Joy) I felt that I had come to an end with a certain musical expression and also compositional technique. All these works were based upon anextended chaconne principle with chord chains cycling around undergoing constant transformation and being articulated in a very gestural way. The musical paradox and evidently also the challenge was the discrepancy between abrick-like method expressed in a world of gestures (with all difficulties involved in conceiving music out of phrases) aiming at a continuity in terms of progression and development. After the Piano Concerto in the autumn of1991 I strongly felt that I couldn't continue in that direction anymore. I started to work on a project called Corrente for 16 players as a study for the full orchestra version entitled Corrente II.In order to bring theharmonic and rhythmic world closer to each other I abandoned the chaconne principle and based the harmony on different scale aggregates. By combining these scales and by filtering or by enhancing them with additional pitchesbased on more acoustically oriented views of the scales by considering them as partials of virtual fundamentals I was able to work in a rich harmonic world without actually having to do harmonic transformations and progressions. The rhythmic material was based on pattern figures with a rather kaleidoscopic approach of repetition and variation.By combining these pattern figures and scales aggregates I wanted to give the musical expression a 'narrative'sense of streams and directions moving around in different orchestral constellations.Corrente II for symphony orchestra is based on the same material as the piece for chamber orchestra. Par RAMEAU JEAN-PHILIPPE. Richer than ever – Rameau’s “Zoroastre” in the version of 1756. Opera in five acts. Rameau’s revised version of his opera “Zoroastre”, which could be heard and seen between 20 January 1756 and 26 March 1757 at the Académie royale de musique, was favourably received. Also from today’s point of view the work profits dramaturgically from many of the changes and seems altogether richer and more tightly woven than the original of 1749. The subject matter of the libretto, derived from Ancient Persian sources, is timeless: the struggle between good and bad. The good is embodied by the religious reformer Zoroastre, a representative of the supreme light being Orosmade. He is opposed by the ambitious magician Abramane who serves Ariman, the spirit of the dark. The opera includes some of Rameau’s most ecstatic and spiritual musical numbers, such as the episode of sun worship in Act 3 with the sublime „Hymne à la Lumière“, which, for unknown reasons, was not integrated in the revision of 1756. It is therefore included in Appendix 3 of this Bärenreiter edition. Incidentally, with “Zoroastre” the prologue, wh ich had been customary since the beginnings of French opera in the 1670s, was abandoned. Instead Rameau was the first to introduce an overture which set the scene for the entire drama and thereby anticipated Gluck’s opera reform by many years. Here we present the instrumental numbers for concert performance. - Based on the first scholarly-critical edition, published as part of “Opera Omnia Rameau” - Instrumental numbers in order of performance, but also grouped by key in the list of contents, enabling them to be combined freely into orchestral suites - Published with performance material on hire / Date parution : 2022-11-08/ Répertoire / Orchestre

Full Score-The Persian traditional music (called the Dastgah Segah) is based on intervals made of three quarter-tones and natural whole-tones. Segah has no interval in common with the European/ Western equal-temperament tuning. This lack of common intervalsbetween the Segah mode and the equal-temperament tuning will lead to a cognitive dissonance if this mode is set against the equal-temperament system. My goal has been to elaborate on the innate tensions that exists between the two interval systemsand use it as a symbol for the existing political and cultural tensions between the Persian and the Western cultures. The piece consists of two Persian traditional instruments the Ney (Persian vertical bamboo flute) and the Kamanche (Persian spikefiddle) as the musical representatives of the Persian culture set against the Western orchestra as the musical representative of the Western culture. A small ensemble of Western instruments consisting of a harp and string quintet accompanies thePersian instruments. The harp is tuned to the Segah intervals and the string quintet plays in the Segah mode. The orchestra is performing inthe Western equal- temperament tuning. From the very first bars of the main section of the piece confusionsand misunderstandings arise. The orchestra being unable to play in Segah or understand the mode becomes more and more agitated. Musical tensions between the soloists and the orchestra lead to musical confrontations and finally to musicalviolence. The orchestra becomes extremely violent and militaristic and tries to suppress the soloists efforts to express their musical thoughts. In the midst of all these confusions and cultural misunderstandings musical connections and attractionsstart to take place. The orchestra and the soloists find themselves musically attracted to each other and start imitating each others musical phrases. Cognitive dissonances start to be gradually transformed to musical dialogues symbolizing thegradual replacement of the clash of civilizations with the dialogue of civilizations. Segah was written for Khosrow and Kian Soltani and premiered at the Segah Festival on January 15 2016.

Score-Silvestre Revueltas' ‘Sensemaya’ was written in 1937 for chamber orchestra; one year later the composer transcribed it for a huge orchestra of twenty-seven wind instruments fourteen percussion instruments and strings. The rhythms are laid out precisely and have considerable visceral impact very much in a manner that recalls Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring. However Revueltas' masterful orchestration and ability to evoke the ancient Maya civilization with decidedly modern music are uniquely his own. It is a unique orchestral spectacle something only Revueltas could have written and in its way it is one of the most brutal works of its time. The workbegins with a low note in the bassoon as the percussion plays the sinuous syncopated rhythm that drives the work. Soon a solo horn enters playing the first of this work's two major themes a muscular ominous motif. Other horns join the first one to play the theme growing louder and more emphatic but rigorously yoked to the underlying rhythm. Eventually the horns blast as loudly as they can with obsessive trills on the bassoon far underneath and the violins enter with the slashing second theme. The horns take up this new theme and bring it to a climax after which the music returns to its opening texture. This recapitulation brings with it a mood of foreboding. The rhythm becomes even more obsessive and finally the music reaches a massive climax during which both themes are played overlapping sometimes in part and sometimes in whole by woodwinds brass and violins in what sounds like a musical riot. The coda feels like the final dropping of a knife.

Philip Glass has produced ten symphonies so far the ones immediately preceding this one inspired by sources as diverse as Allen Ginsberg poetry Aboriginal writings and Native American song. Symphony No 8 however has noreferences to non-musical materials and takes as its subject according to Glass ‘the language of music itself’.The three-movement work does not conform to classical symphonic form with an extended twenty-minute first movement a slow passacaglia for the second movement and a short dense theme joined by a counter theme then ending with an extended cadence to complete the work in the third movement. Symphony No 8 was commissioned by the BrucknerOrchester Linz under the direction of Dennis Russell Davis.American composer Philip Glass is widely known as one of the most celebrated influential and prolific of the modern composers. He is frequently referred to as aminimalist though he prefers to call himself a composer of ‘music with repetitive structures.’ His operas among them the renowned Einstein On The Beach are performed across the globe and he has created work for small andlarge ensembles film and experimental theatre and founded his own performing group The Philip Glass Ensemble.

The word GONG is saturated with associations: the splendour of the Orient mysticism drama loud metallic clangour violent impact etc. The present piece draws upon all those connotations but it is primarily a symphonic drama about the life and behaviour of the sun our closest star and prime source of life on Earth. Describing the sun in music is not a new idea of course; during a visit to Greece Carl Nielsen was inspired by the orbit of the sun and its very un-Danish ferocity and thus wrote the 'Helios Overture'. GONG is a 'Helios Overture' too of sorts albeit more abstract. Recent astronomical research shows that the surface of the sun reverberates like a gong infour different simultaneous tempi (not directly depicted in the score though); the sun looks like a GONG - the O in the written work looks like the sun; there is even a solar research group called GONG (Global Oscillation Network Group). Formally the composition follows the life and fate of the sun from the initial explotional birth through the hyper-activity as energy source as we know it today to the final predicted flaring up and collapse into a so-called 'white dwarf'. But - being a musical composition not an astrophysical thesis - GONG is brought to its compositional conclusion by a 'real concert-ending' a chord taken from the middle of the piece and sustained over several bars from virtual nothingness to full force.

This work was written with a mix between computer technology and the more traditional orchestra the piece was composed in such a way that it would support it's own acoustics. Lindberg worked with amplification of instruments and electronically transformed sounds thus producing greater possibilities to abandon acoustic limits. In order for the piece to be supported by it's own acoustics the piece had to be written in terms of foreground and background harmony every foreground chord would always have it's background a shadow existing without it's main chord.Another theme to the piece is that of textural motion as rapid gestures and motions are a big part ofthe composer's interest. Static repitions seemed to limit the piece however so they were compensated for on another level so with a repetitive rhythmic pattern the harmonic material changes rapidly or when a chain of chords is static the rhythmic and timbral qualities vary frequently. Work for Orchestra commissioned by the Finnish Broadcasting Company.

In the early years of our century when vital new forces were revolutionising the arts Russian-born Alexander Scriabin (1872-1915) was one of the visionary pioneers who sought a new musical language. At least a full decade before the advances of Stravinsky and Schoenberg Scriabin had begun the process of a complete break with all musical conventions. By 1905 he was immersed in a search for a way to express in sound the mystical and theosophical ideas obsessed him. Scriabin’s last two orchestral works were the products of a virtual delirium of composing. Simultaneously refining his poem called Poem of Ecstasy andcompleting the symphony that grew out of it (and shared its name) Scriabin never forgot the rapture of composing this work about creation and self-fulfilment: “I gasp for breath but oh what bliss! The very meter kindles the meaning…” Prometheus: Poem of Fire – Scriabin’s last and most revolutionary symphony – portrays Man’s epic journey from the mists of beginning time to a wonderous self-realisation given the gift of fire and light to make creative vision possible. Massively scored Prometheus incorporates a “colour Organ” to bathe the performance space in a vast interplay of coloured lights. For the music professional and every student of composition orchestration and conducting both scores are strikingly original and instructive. Equally fascinating are Scriabin’s approach to composition the extraordinary sonorities of his orchestra and his fanciful often supercharged performance instructions that replace conventional words for tempo mood and expression.

J.S. Bach?s Four Orchestral Suites belong to that select group of works one could truly call classical hits! They stem from Bach?s extremely productive time in Cöthen which ended in 1721.Unfortunately the only sources that have come down to us are copyist parts from Leipzig. These originally formed the basis for the critical complete edition volume which was published in 1967 as part of the ?New Bach Edition?.At that time Bärenreiter also issued separate scores and parts which however were prepared with additional articulation and performance suggestions. Bärenreiter?s new edition of Bach?s great four suites nowpresents the Urtext as found in the ?New Bach Edition? i.e. without emendations and performance suggestions. The orchestral parts have been re-engraved and the material includes an alternative version of the Overture and Air to the D major suite BWV 1068 including a ?Violino concertato? part.- Urtext editions of these important works.- Newly engraved parts and fully realized continuo.- For the first time an alternative version of the Overture and Air to the D major suite BWV 1068 with ? Violino concertato ? is included.- Full scores study scores and performance material available for sale.

Score & Parts Orchestre Southern Music Ltd

Born in Havana Cuba in 1895 Ernesto Lecuona is arguably Cuba's greatest serious composer. He was a gifted pianist who wrote hundreds of songs and piano works before he died in 1963. Most of his music is composed in a rich authentic Cuban style. The most famous of his works is Malagueña the sixth movement of his Suite Andalucia for solo piano which was first published in 1928. Malagueña has been recorded as a popular song (with added lyrics) as a serious piano work (even by Lecuona himself in the 1950's) and also as a jazz standard (Bill Holman's arrangement for the Stan Kenton Orchestra in the early 1960's.) Over the years it has been arranged many times for variousother mediums ranging from symphony orchestra to field arrangements for drum and bugle corps. In 1976 James Barnes arranged Malagueña for the University of Kansas Marching Band. A few years later with permission from the publisher he expanded this original arrangement into a full work for symphonic band called Prelude Fantasy and Fandango on Lecuona's Malagueña. After several performances in the spring of 1978 (most notably at the MENC Convention in Colorado Springs) this work along with over 200 other Barnes manuscripts lay fallow in the KU Band Library. While packing up his office belongings when he retired from The University of Kansas in 2015 Barnes came across this long languishing Prelude Fantasy and Fandango which remained in condensed score. In the fall of 2016 he completely re-composed the opening portion of the work reduced the number of required percussion and disposed of the two harps in his 1978 version. This new setting features evocative thinly scored extended solo passages for clarinet bassoon and flute before the full wind band concludes the work with a powerful dramatic setting of the main themes of Lecuona's masterful Malagueña.

| Stephen Albert: Riverrun:
Orchestra: Score Orchestre Schirmer
Score-'RiverRun' was Steven Albert's third work inspired by the writing of James...(+)
Score-'RiverRun' was Steven Albert's third work inspired by the writing of James Joyce. The opening movement ‘Rain Music’ is meant to convey the origins of a river. After the sharply accented chords of the movement's introduction themusic becomes quieter suggesting an atmosphere of expectancy. The lightly scored second movement ‘Leafy Speafing’ has a languid cadenza-like opening on alto flute followed by a more tightly focused thematic idea from thesolo viola. The two instruments then engage in a quiet dialogue against the softly changing chords. The third movement ‘Beside the Rivering Waters’ is a fragmented march and scherzo. It opens with a children'ssong. The march for the pit band follows and we are engulfed in a boozy wake. The scherzo brings a return of the current then the march returns abruptly followed by the children's tune - which is in turn transformedinto a raucous pub song. Throughout the fourth movement ‘RiversEnd’ musical ideas from the preceding movements are recalled. Night is falling and the river is moving quietly into darkness. As it approaches the open sea itsmomentum builds and it soon becomes a torrent spilling into the ocean. The work ends quietly.
