I Give You The End Of A Golden String was commissioned in 2013 by the Royal Philharmonic Society/Britten-Pears Foundation to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Benjamin Brittenand the bicentenary of thefoundation of the Royal Philharmonic Society. The piece was first performed on 8th June 2013 by the Britten Sinfonia conducted by Ryan Wigglesworth.'My aim when I began this piece was to create a long length ofstring music out of a single strand of melody. While experimenting at the beginning shaping and extending a melody in many possible directions I cameacross William Blake???s lines???I give you the end of a goldenstring;Only wind it into a ball It will lead you in at Heaven???s gate Built in Jerusalem???s wall???and this became my working method winding a single tune around itself so that it gradually formed itselfinto amuch richer more complex texture. The process happens three times producing the equivalent of acontinuous three-movement concerto. The ???first movement??? is engendered by two solo violas (the melody at the beginning alreadyentwined witha slightly alternative version of itself). The ???slow movement??? (a more extended more decorated developmentof the opening tune) is introduced by a solo cello (soon winding itself into a quartet of celli). The fast???finale??? led by two solo violins focuses on decorations within the melody rolling out ribbons of (Britten-like') thirds.' - Judith WeirSuggested minimum strings: 8.6.4.4.2 players

Fantasia In F Minor for Strings (1799) after the Organ Piece for Mechanical Organ K.608.Despite their high quality Mozart?s works for unusual instruments or instrumental combinations often receive scant attention. One of these remarkable compositions is a piece for mechanical Organ K. 608 that he wrote for ? Müller?s Art Gallery ? in March 1791. By 1799 it had already appeared in print in Vienna as a fantasy for Piano four-hands.But there were also other transcriptions including one for two Flutes and another for String Quartet.Several sources and later editions attest to the popularity of this contemporary stringarrangement of 1799. Our new volume edited by Christopher Hogwood takes the relevant sources into account. It contains a trilingual preface (Eng./Ger./Cz.) discussing the work?s history and performance practice as well as a detailed critical report.- Almost unknown music from Mozart?s final year.- Transcription of 1799 for String Quartet.- Additional Double Bass part provided to allow performances with Chamber Orchestra.- Detailed preface critical report (Eng./ Cz ./Ger.). Also includes facsimiles.- Full score & parts (BA9505) available for sale.

Lament by Mack Wilberg for String Orchestra with optional Organ. This moving piece for String Orchestra is full of pathos and emotion. Stylistically evocative of Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings and the distinctive musical language of Arvo Pärt Lament is based around a two-bar arching ostinato artfully developing musical fragments and enriching the texture to reach a powerful central climax. This is a welcome addition to the String Orchestra repertory. This piece was recorded on the 2019 Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra CD Tree of Life under the title 'And Wept Bitterly (Lament on an Ostinato for StringOrchestra)'.

Player Score-John Luther Adams' Untouched for String Quartet. Player score. Over the years my large ensemble works have sometimes included String Quartet. However I didn't write my first piece forString Quartet alone until I was fifty-nine. Now in my second String Quartet the fingers of the players still have yet to touch the fingerboard. This music contains no normal stopped tones. All the sounds areproduced either as natural harmonics or on open strings. The highest harmonic utilized is the 10th. Some of the harmonics may be more resonant when played as double harmonics. For example the 6th harmonic can beproduced by simultaneously touching the nodes for the 2nd and 3rd harmonics. Dynamics are free. But all the sounds in the air at any moment should be equally balanced. - John Luther Adams

Nymphea Reflection is a work by renowned composer Kaija Saariaho arranged for String Orchestra. Commissioned by the Schleswig Holstein Festival it was first performed on the 16th of August 2001 inElmshorn Germany by Sinfonietta Cracovia conducted by John Axelrod. Saariaho states that the starting point for Nymphea Reflection came from the idea of arranging her stringquartet Nymphea. Originally working on a straight arrangement she eventually realised that this would be very difficult and she'd need to find a new way of composing that particular piece of music. She designed a formal conceptfor each of the six sections imbuing them with very different characters. Her simulation of electronic processing by means of orchestration is an innovative take on a new form while the effect ofthe poem by Arseniy Tarkovsky whispered by the musicians gives a haunting new perspective to both music and words.

String Quartet No.1 - 'Quartetto Breve' (1952) by Per Nørgård.Programme note: The spectrum of sound the gesticulation – in short the very nature of the strings – has always had a central place in my output demonstrated by the numbers of string quartets concertos with string soloist chamber and solo works. The interest dates back to my school years when I was fortunate to be able to compose for a cello-playing schoolmate and to accompany him on the piano. I discovered then the innumerable nuances of sound and playing varieties offered by just one bow four strings andfive fingers.. My first string quartet – Quartetto Breve – has a firm root in the Nordic tradition and is strongly inspired by Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) and my teacher Vagn Holmboe (1909-96). Per Nørgård (1998)

Par VIVALDI ANTONIO. Vivaldi's popular classic, The Four Seasons, is a piece every aspiring string player wants to play. But to perform it in its original form - four substantial concerti, each with a virtuoso solo part - is beyond the reach of many school or amateur orchestras. These arrangements, Scenes from the Four Seasons, aim to bring Vivaldi's music within the scope of students and amateurs while keeping much of its original form and character. Includes the Birdsong (from 'Spring'), Harvest Home (from 'Autumn') and Fireside (from 'Winter')./ Répertoire / Set de Cordes
