Konzert für Flöte Streicher und Basso continuo-From among the nearly 300 flute concertos by Johann Joachim Quantz the flute teacher of King Frederick the Great the G-major work QV 5:174 has been enjoying a very special popularity ever since its rediscovery by the Dresden flautist Moritz F?rstenau in the late 19th century. The principal source for the present Urtext edition is the set of parts of the first performance which took place in Berlin's Charlottenburg Palace in 1745. This source assumes a unique significance due to the many entries and emendations in the hand of the composer.

J.S. Bach's four Orchestral Suites belong to that select group of works one could truly call classical hits! They stem from Bach's extremely productive time in Cöthen which ended in 1721.Unfortunately the only sources that have come down to us are copyist parts from Leipzig . These originally formed the basis for the critical complete edition volume which was published in 1967 as part of the ' New Bach Edition? .At that time Bärenreiter also issued separate scores and parts which however were prepared with additional articulation and performance suggestions. Bärenreiter's new edition of Bach's great four suites now presents the Urtext as found in the ' New Bach Edition? i.e. without emendations and performance suggestions. The orchestral parts have been re-engraved and the material includes an alternative version of the Overture and Air to the D major suite BWV 1068 including a 'Violino concertato? part.- Urtext editions of these important works- Newly engraved parts and fully realized continuo- For the first time an alternative version of the Overture and Air to the D major suite BWV 1068 with ' Violino concertato ? is included / Flûte Et Orchestre

Illuminations - Capriccio For Flute And Orchestra was composed by Erik Norby in 1977. Programme Note:The title should rightly be pronounced in French (same spelling) as the piece was composed for and is dedicated to French flute virtuoso Jean-Pierre Rampal who premiered ILLUMINATIONS in connection withhimreceiving the Danish Sonnings Musikpris in 1978.The title reflects my endeavour to create different illuminative effects in sound for which the flute is an excellent medium with its apparent ability to transform lightphenomena into musical shapes. Tue music in ILLUMINATIONS sometimes sounds like glitteringreflections sometimes like a roaring bonfire. The absence of ordinary flutes in the orchestra further enables the soloist to shine above a darker orchestral background. Several motives and shapes are illuminated along the way and the music progressesin kaleidoscopic pattems of prismatic refractions. Erik Norby

This ?Suite' is not one of my 'epic' instrumental concertos such as the concertos for cello, violin or oboe, but a substantially smaller-structured series of dance forms arranged into a suite. Sunken worlds suddenly emerge here, only to reach the surface, hover in dangerously distorted fashion and then sink back to the bottom.Almost every individual movement allots the solo flute a specific tonal colouring and an instrumental group from the orchestra: in the opening Allemande, the flutes of the orchestra (including alto and bass flute and later also piccolo to include the entire flute family) - the string section in the Sarabande - in both chorales (extremely muted in the first and brutalist in the second), the brass etc. - and it is only in the concluding Badinerie that all orchestral groups are combined, although they are terraced in the Baroque style, one following another, seldom all playing simultaneously. This permits the flute to remain the provider of all impulses - it attaches itself to the wide variety of instrumental colours, becomes suffused with these colours and thereby shines in different lights - acerbic, pale and radiant. This first performance marks the conclusion of my two-year residence with the Cleveland Orchestra. The immense versatility of this fine body of sound (which is indeed treated as such with the sum of its parts) and the exciting dark timbre of its principal flautist Joshua Smith have to a great extent determined the form and tonal character of my Flûte en suite. A dreamlike and evocative work from Peter Maxwell Davies for flute and orchestra. The piece captures the wonder and sanctuary of the composer's home surrounded by seabirds and seals that fire the imagination in childlike ways evoking images of mermaids and angels. Descriptive and inventive orchestral colours support and illuminate the flute solo material that is both tranquil and highly virtuosic. The piece was first performed in May 1999 at theRoyal Concert Hall Dublin.

The solo flute here is kept in high profile by the absence from the orchestra not only of other flutes but also of violins and oboes; in addition the trumpets are used sparingly (they do not for instance play in the slowmovement) so that for much of the time the flute is playing against a mellow ensemble of clarinets horns bassoons and low strings. If this is nevertheless one of Davies's most open-spirited pieces that comes partly from theready flights of the soloist partly from its glockenspiel accompaniments in the outer movements (replaced by ticking claves in the Adagio) partly from the dancing character of so much of the music and partly from the harmonicclarity in a light region not far from C minor.
