Par JOLIVET ANDRE. Pastoreles De Noë l by Andre Jolivet is a piece for Flute, Bassoon and the Harp lasting nearly 13 minutes. This is the full score of Aheym for String Quartet, composed by Bryce Dessner, best known as the guitarist of The National, but also an acclaimed composer in his own right.Composed in 2009 for the Kronos Quartet for their performance in Brooklyn's Prospect Park for the Celebrate Brooklyn! festival, Aheym (meaning 'homeward' in Yiddish) was directly inspired by his grandmother's migration to America. Dessner states that the stories and information she used to tell them permeated their collective imagination and created a close connection to the past. He dedicates Aheym to his grandmother, Sarah Dessner. The score in this edition was first performed on the 12th of March 2009 at the MusicNOW Festival, and on the 18th of July 2009 in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. The work lasts around 10 minutes and is filled with dynamic tempo changes, a mix of staccato and smooth playing and all-round excitement. Par LIEBMAN DAVID. Atonement commemorates the holiest day of the year in the Jewish faith, called Yom Kippur. On that day an individual repents for transgressions which may have occurred during the past year. Fasting and prayer are the activities which begin at sundown with the chanting of Kol Nidre and end twenty four hours later. I wrote the melodies for this piece on Yom Kippur, 1979. Part of the piece quotes the beginning strains of Hatikvah, the Israeli national anthem. It is adaptable to any solo instrument. Par LERDAHL FRED. Waltzes, a cycle of twelve virtuoso waltzes for violin, viola, cello, and double bass, was commissioned by the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, where the first nine waltzes were premiered in 1981. Soon thereafter I composed the final three waltzes. The violinist Rolf Schulte led the first performance of the complete work in New York City in 1983. Waltzes lasts about 22 minutes and is dedicated to the violist Scott Nickrenz, who directed the chamber music series at Spoleto. In arranging the commission, Mr. Nickrenz made three stipulations: make my modernist idiom accessible for summer-festival listening, provide a challenge for brilliant string players accustomed to 19th-century repertory, and give the piece a loud ending. The idea of composing a set of waltzes came from the pleasure I took in playing waltzes by Schubert and Chopin at the piano. Waltzes incorporates occasional references to the music of past composers, but always in ways that fit within my own musical language. Created during the First World War, Maurice Ravel's composition 'Le Tombeau de Couperin' casts a longing look at the past while at the same time being full to the brim with traces of modern music. Each of the six movements is dedicated to friends who died in battle. In 1919 Ravel arranged four of these movements for large orchestra by skilfully borrowing melodic lines and colours from the piano setting. In the present new arrangement written for the Stella Piano Trio, these elements were adjusted to the instrumentation and their relationship within the ensemble. As in Ravel's orchestration, each note is taken into account, even if the cello is sometimes given a melody which is an octave lower than the original./ Répertoire / Trio avec Piano
