Satz der Sonate op. 11 Die zweibändige Ausgabe unter dem Titel ?Miriam's Song' (Das Lied der Mirjam) ist jüdischen Komponistinnen des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts gewidmet. Sie beinhaltet Viola-Bearbeitungen der Werke von Fanny Hensel geb. Mendelssohn, Vally Weigl, Lena Stein-Schneider und Ruth Schonthal (Band 1). Das von Schonthal aufgenommene Allegro moderato ist eine Originalkomposition für Viola und Klavier. Im 2. Band begegnen wir den Komponistinnen Helene Liebmann und Sarah Feigin. Der Titel der Ausgabe bezieht sich auf die Rolle der Prophetin Mirjam, der älteren Schwester von Mose und Aaron. Beim Auszug des israelischen Volkes aus Ägypten führte sie nach der Durchquerung des Schilfmeeres den Freudentanz und Gesang der Frauen an (2. Buch Mose 15,20-21). Bezeichnenderweise hat der Berliner Maler Wilhelm Hensel im 19. Jahrhundert seine Frau, die Komponistin Fanny Hensel geb. Mendelssohn, als Mirjam porträtiert.Das Repertoire romantischer Konzertliteratur für Viola ist recht begrenzt. Arrangement for Viola and Piano-?Sooner or later the ?Romantic Pieces? will pave their way through all the salons?: thus the periodical Dalibor predicted when the ?Romantic Pieces? op. 75 were first issued by the publisher Simrock in 1887. Since then they have become some of Dvorák?s most popular works for violin and piano. Now they are being made available for violists also.Bella and Semjon Kalinowsky have arranged the four pieces on the basis of the ?Complete Edition of the Works of Anton n Dvorák?. The piano part of the original version remains while the violin part has been adapted for viola; it has been transcribed into the alto clef and includes fingering and bowing marks.With theirentrancing melodies and poetry these pieces pose few technical challenges and are thus easy to play.

Posterity has retained of Nadia Boulanger only her gifts as a virtuoso of the piano and organ her skill as a conductor (of vocal ensemble and orchestra) and most of all her incredible charisma as a teacher. For nearly sixty years 'Mademoiselle' made the most of her famous Wednesdays bringing rigour and passion to the training of several generations of musicians: among so many others Aaron Copland Leonard Bernstein Igor Markevitch Michel Legrand Witold Lutoslawski Astor Piazzolla Quincy Jones and John-Eliot Gardiner have all kept unforgettable memories of thesetimes.Was Nadia Boulanger wrong to let teaching music take precedence over her composing as Gabriel Fauré the great master she venerated believed? The publication of Three Pieces for Viola and Piano raises the question. This transcription of Three Pieces for cello and piano was composed between 1911 and 1913 and published by Heugel. The two initial pieces were originally written for organ: the first in E flat minor brings a moderate tempo to a melancholy cantilena with Romantic accents while the second in A minor exudes warmth and tenderness. The third piece (C sharp minor) most likely originally titled Danse espagnole heralds the Roaring Twenties with its restlessness and festive crackle. Together they emit a charm that is difficult to resist.

The music scene took notice of Erik Satie (1866-1925) all of a sudden: The world premiere of his ballet Parade on 18 May 1917 caused quite a scandal. The production which involved Sergey Diaghilev with his 'Ballets Russes' Pablo Picasso (scenery and costumes) Jean Cocteau (story) as well as Léonide Massine (choreography) divided the music scene of Paris yet made the composer widely known. Satie who hardly had had any solid musical training and lived in Paris for almost all his life developed a new musical style in deliberate rejection of the 'Wagnérisme' of his time. Classical form models new harmonies stylistic ease meditative and clownish elements amalgamated in an original way the perfect example being his 3 Gymnopédies of 1888 the first of which was here arranged for a solo instrument with Piano accompaniment: Thus it is now possible even for non-pianists to play this famous miniature by Satie. Thanks to its easy playability it can also be used for educational purposes.

The viola is often not credited with being able to take over a soloistic role - but this is completely unjust. In 1738 Johann Philipp Eisel already wrote of the viola as being the 'very bowels of music? and stressed that it was not only needed to 'flesh out? the orchestral sound but also as a 'concert voice, which is fully proven by the concertos and concert overtures by the famous Capell-Meister Telemann?. Telemann's Concerto in G major is considered to be one of the earliest works for solo viola and orchestra and forms part of the core repertoire for pupils and students. Version for Viola-In the later years of his life in the 1890s Johannes Brahms was inspired by the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld to compose Trio Op.114 Quintet Op.115 and the Sonatas Op.120 – three gems inthe Clarinet chamber music repertoire. Brahms also provided a part for Viola as an alternative to the Clarinet. The revision of this Henle Urtext edition of the Viola version of Op.120 is based onthe musical text of the New Brahms Complete Edition and in many respects contains significant improvements: the original autograph was consulted for the first time the newly set Piano score now contains the Viola part and Violaplayers can benefit from fingerings and bowings by Tabea Zimmermann in the solo part.

He was one of the best-respected French composers of his day and a member of the Academy and a professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire. Massenet was very influential on other French composers in France. His students were also successful due to Massenet's tutelage. Though he was principally an opera composer he also wrote ballets orchestral works and several oratorios. Massenet died in Paris on August 13 1912.This is the Meditation from Massenet’s famous opera Thais and has been transcribed for solo Viola with Piano accompaniment by Alan Arnold.
