This has become a staple of band literature. Claude Smith is well known for taking hymn tunes and creating wonderful pieces of music. Trumpet and trombone trios are featured in the opening statement, followed by free-flowing Rubato flute solo. A piccolo and bassoon duet follow in the next section. Variations of the theme appear in the fugato section, followed by the full chorale. The audience may sing the hymn tune during the full chorale. The triumphant ending features the horn section which leads to an emotional finale. God of Our Fathers is also available for full orchestra, and an edition for SATB Choir with piano/organ, which may be used in a massed band/orchestra/choir setting as well. An audience favorite and one of Smith’s most popular works.

Here is a work that was ahead of its time. If you are looking for a work filled with excitement and adventure, then Acclamation is your piece! Smith gets right into it with an energetic ostinato and a fragment of his original theme. The snare drum’s ruff is highlighted as a transition into a slow section in 6/4, with one of Smith’s most luscious melodies. English Horn is featured with flute in the slow section as well, but with optional cues for alto saxophone. Acclamation makes its way back to Allegro with the usual percussion section getting us to the original material. Several solos are highlighted. Well constructed and a piece to be used for contest; also one which will be enjoyed by audiences alike.

Amazing Grace is one of the most well-known spiritual songs known to date. Claude T. Smith cleverly created this band setting forming variations throughout. With Smith’s passing in December of 1987, this was one of the final works he produced. Legendary composer W. Francis McBeth once said, If Claude Smith only wrote the fanfare to Eternal Father, he would still be a legend. Smith takes the Navy’s hymn as the basis for his fanfare. This famous hymn tune, normally in the major key, has now been placed in the minor key then transitions to Allegro Vivace. The hymn tune is put through its paces including several variations and two fugatos (one for the woodwinds and one for brass). A short transition,(including the famous 7/8 measure!) to the now well-known setting for French horn quartet, gives us an emotional rendition of the original hymn tune now in the major key. The full band plays the hymn, and a timpani roll takes us back to the original fanfare now in C major. A classic of literature and a composition which will provide a meaningful experience for musician and audience member alike.

The first of two trumpet solos Smith wrote for Carl Doc Severinsen. If you have a trumpet player par excellence, then this piece is for your soloist and band. It begins with a dramatic opening followed by an Allegro. Smith then weaves in the blues for the soloist to play a wonderful lyric melody first, followed by an opportunity to adlib with the chord progression. The accompaniment is a grade 3.5, but the solo is most certainly a grade 6. Also available for trumpet solo and piano.

One of Claude T. Smith's last completed works, Raise Your Voice in Song was commissioned by the Nebraska Music Educators Association for the 50th Anniversary on NMEA! It was written for the 1986 All-State Band, Choir and Orchestra for their combined performance on November 22, 1986 in Hastings, NE. This majestic work lends itself as a finale, for full orchestra, or a combined performance with choir. There are two sets of lyrics (secular and Christmas).

Overture Romantique begins with a pounding ostinato of low brass and timpani, which then accompanies a short, dramatic introduction of the thematic material, which then lends itself to an Adagio. The Allegro propels the band into a rousing section of woodwind runs, multiple meter changes and a transitional fanfare. The center section of the piece features an ostinato in 3/2, with alternating sections in 4/2 and 5/2. An appearance by the transitional fanfare is played, and music previously stated returns. One final hearing of the first theme, which leads to a marvelous Eb major chord, features the ostinato and the trombones stating the opening music one more time. One of Smith’s first virtuoso efforts for the concert band.

Written for accomplished soloist Brian Bowman, principal Euphonium in the US Air Force Band, as a commissioned work under conductor Col. Arnald Gabriel, this composition is for virtuoso soloist and concert band. It calls for expressive phrasing especially through the Lento and Andante sections. Smith incorporates mixed meters and his signature 7/8 bar to create a dance-like lift. A concert showpiece that contains a challenging cadenza for the soloist. Also provided is the cadenza as performed by Bowman. Solo is grade 6.

Smith’s first published march. A bravura opening fanfare punctuated with the percussion forces open this march. The first strain gives us a jaunty tune with baritones and trombones playing the countermelody. The second strain refers back to the opening fanfares with percussion section soli banding about. A reserved trio tune played by clarinets, first horn and baritone are assisted with chromatic runs played by flute, oboe, muted first trumpet and bells. The opening fanfares return in the break strain, which then gives us a terrific trio strain. Accessible and playable for all musicians!

Translated Sound of The Winds, Sonus Ventorum begins with a dramatic opening for full band. This gives way to an exciting Allegro with trombones and saxophones playing the ostinato. The secondary theme is fragmented and foreshadowed prior to the second announcement of the first theme. The piece ends with both themes being played together. Great teaching elements in Sonus Ventorum include the 7/8 measure, and several rhythmic challenges as well. One of Smithâ??s signature works.

A slow, solemn chorale opens in b-flat minor, which contains all of the material for the piece. The second statement with a countermelody played by first trumpet and trombone. A flute cadenza brings the opening to a close, and an Allegro is followed with fragments from the opening theme. The slow chorale is brought back one last time; the tune is then played Allegro Vivo, with the original countermelody played by Smith’s own instrument – the French horn. A piece easily playable for concert and contest.
