The idea for the Sailors’ Chorus came to Wagner in 1839 aboard ship in the safety of a fjord after having fled from a storm at sea. The chanting of the crew as it echoed off the fjord’s granite cliffs inspired the composer to create this Chorus with its accented rhythms. The Sailors' Chorus is scored for men’s Chorus TTBB. Lyrics in German and English translation are provided.

A majestic and triumphant Operatic theme by the ever expressive Wagner and his giant ornate and considered style. From his popular and acclaimed Opera Tannhauser this familiar piece has been arranged for a TTBB chorus with piano accompaniment. It is fabulous treatment and perfectly suited to Men’s Voices which serve to emphasise the depth and the drama of the piece.
