John Tavener 's Kaleidoscopes is a tribute to Mozart for Solo Oboe, Percussion and four String Quartets, lasting approximately 30 minutes. The work was commissioned by the Britten Sinfonia, and first performed by them with soloist Nicholas Daniel on 6th November 2006 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London. This is the Solo Oboe part. In the composer's note, Tavener  explains his high regard for Mozart, and how in Kaleidoscopes  he attempts to take Mozart's music and meditate upon it in four main cycles. He states that all the music has its source in Mozart, whether it be rhythmic, harmonic or contrapuntal. .

French composer and teacher, Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a prolific composer of the 20th century as a member of 'Les Six'. His compositions remain highly regarded, Concerto for Oboe being no exception. Milhaud's compositions are influenced by jazz and polytonality, as exemplified in Concerto for Oboe, which includes a Piano reduction accompaniment. Composed in 1957, Concerto for Oboe is an alternative, exciting concerto made up of three movements; 1) Animated, 2) With Serenity, and 3) Animated. With a typical performance lasting around 18 and a half minutes, Milhaud makes use of variation in articulation, complex rhythms, chromaticism, altering tempos, variation in dynamics and a wide tessitura, amongst other aspects. Milhaud's Concerto for Oboe is essential to all advanced oboists seeking modern and exciting repertoire..

Even though the Frankfurt composer Kurt Hessenberg (1908-1994) made a lasting impression, especially by his sacred choral music - his motet 'O Herr, mache mich zum Werkzeug deines Friedens' forms part of the repertoire of every good choir - his career as a composer began with piano, chamber and orchestral music. All his life Hessenberg remained faithful to these genres. Between 1958 and 1963 he wrote five miniatures which he put together into Opus 71 and in which he let the five instruments of a wind quintet have their 'say' separately and with piano accompaniment: flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon.Created in 1958, 'Capriccio' Op. 71 No. 2 is dedicated to the oboe. It is an enjoyable and rewarding piece in a neoclassical style characterized by an extended tonality.
