Par BARTOK BELA. Like so many famous virtuosic works, Bartók’s Sonata for Solo Violin was said, by its commissioner, Yehudi Menuhin, at first sight, to be unplayable! Of course, Menuhin soon changed his opinion, later describing the work as the most important composition for solo violin since Bach. The original work used the full array of violin techniques such as stopped harmonics, left-hand pizzicato and quarter tones.
These demands gave arranger, Christophe Dejour, much pause for thought when preparing this arrangement, not least in how to produce quarter tones on the guitar! Fortunately, both Bartók and Menuhin came to his rescue here. Menuhin had had problems playing these at speed and Bartók agreed that they were only for “colour” and accepted an alternative version Menuhin presented to him. The Sonata also contains several compositional techniques that are highly appropriate for the guitar such as chord progressions, contrapuntal motion and rhythmic sharpness, allowing Dejour to produce an arrangement that requires great skill to play, just as the original violin version demanded of Yehudi Menuhin./ Répertoire / Guitare

This collection of traditional music from Ireland and Scotland arranged for solo guitar is the result of a passionate study of the tradition by some of the finest musicians playing in this genre. Compiled by Stefan Grossman thisbook includes arrangements by Pierre Bensusan El McMeen Martin Simpson Pat Kirtley Duck Baker Tom Long & Steve Baughman. Looking back less than a century you would find this music performed on fiddle pipes button accordion flutes and whistles in solo and ensemble settings but never guitar even in its basic role of providing rhythm. The challenge for those who attempt to translate Celtic traditional music for fingerstyle guitar is to preserve theunique qualities which are the essence of the style. The popularity of alternate tunings in this music tends to come from two different directions. One is in the desire for production of tonalities of droninginstruments á la the bagpipes and tunings such as DADGAD and EADEAE make this effect relatively easy. On the other hand there are guitar tunings which lend themselves easily to the melodic steps and fullness found in thediatonic Celtic harp such as DGDGBD (open G tuning) and the CGDGAD.

For Fngrstyle Guitar-This volume is intended as a folio of arrangements from the repertoire of a working musician. As such there is only a minimum of discussion about the technical aspects of playing. Students who have already dealt with theAmerican style called fingerpicking or fingerstyle guitar which is quite distinct from other kinds of guitar playing will be at an advantage. The easiest arrangements here are early intermediate level while the other end of thescale includes pieces that may challenge even a professional. Tunes within each section are presented generally in order of difficulty. The bulk of the tunes presented are fiddle tunes with a couple of banjo tunes and severalsongs as well as tunes originally played on other instruments such as harp pipes or accordion. There are even a small number composed for the guitar. For the most part differences in approach among the tunes here are unrelatedto the instrumental sources. All the tunes are presented in notation and tablature. Includes access to online audio.

André Jolivet (1905-1974) composed Chant de Linos for the Solo de Concours at the Paris Conservatoire in 1944. Written for Flute Harp and String Trio this version contains the full score. This piece is quite difficult to execute but will stand out in a competition or a recital. Inspired from what is called a Chant de Linos a threnody (or lament to the dead) in the Greek antiquity this piece is also about Linos son of Apollo. A brilliant musician Linos taught Orpheus the Lyre and got killed by Heracles for excessive criticism. André Jolivet is a French composer whowas greatly inspired by the Antiquity and had a strong interest for atonality. He also wrote many chamber music pieces eleven concertos some orchestral and some vocal music.
