Ballad ist eine ruhige, langsame Melodie, die an eine Rockballade erinnert. Dance ist, wie der Titel schon sagt, ein lebendiger Tanz im 4/4-Takt in Rondoform. Avec The Universal Band Collection, Jacob de Haan a conçu une œuvre “ la carte”. Gr ce sa structure en cinq mouvements indépendants, il est possible d’interpréter l’œuvre dans sa version intégrale ou d’en donner quelques extraits. Tesse Telman a choisi de développer deux lignes mélodiques extraites de deux mouvements de cette suite. Ballad est une ligne fluide et arrondie qui s’apparente une ballade rock tandis que Dance débute sur un air de danse de la Renaissance avant de se fondre dans un passage pétillant et gracieux.

Amon g Rheinberger's three choral ballads for men's choir and orchestra contained in this volume, Das Tal des Espingo op. 50 deserves especially to be rediscovered. The work is based on a ballad by the poet Paul Heyse which describes, in vivid verses, how an army of Moors are reminded of their home during a trek through the Pyrenees when, just at this moment, they fall prey to an ambush by the Basques. In its original form Das Tal des Espingo was a work for men's choir a cappella. This version has been published for the first time in the appendix of volume 17.

“Guil laume Balay (1871-1943) served in the French military as a prolific Cornet player, having won first place in the 1894 Cornet Award competition at the National Academy of Music in Paris. His compositions were popular in the Cornet and brass repertoire at the time, including his Prelude and Ballad, adaptable to Cornet or Saxhorn with Piano accompaniment. This Balay work remains within the brass repertoire to this day and is suitable for intermediate to advanced level players. The Prelude is in 4/4 meter and exploits the full range of the instruments. There is also much use of flourishing semiquaver passages. The Ballad is a much more measured than the first movement and is in 2/4 time. The texture is predominantly melody-dominated homophony with the occasional use of call-and-response between the melody instrument and Piano accompaniment. This quirky, two-movement piece by Balay provides the intermediate to advanced Cornet or Saxhorn player with a fun, alternative performance piece.”.

The poetry on which this composition is based is the Ballad of External Life (the Ballade des äußeren Lebens) from the pen of Viennese author Hugo von Hofmansthal (1874-1929). He is known for, amongst other things, his libretti for the works of Richard Strauss (Der Rosenkavalier, Ariadne auf Naxos, Elektra) and as founder of the Salzburg Festival. Von Hofmansthal was one of the last of the German Symbolists. Central to this literary movement was the unification of the internal and external worlds. The search for meaning was a cornerstone of this fin-de-siècle movement.In the Ballade des äußeren Lebens (Ballad of External Life), the meaninglessness ofexistence is expressed in restricting, oppressive metaphors—an ambience that is reflected in the music. Ultimately, man is capable of establishing order from seeming chaos. The poet expresses this powerfully in a non-rhyming line of poetry: ‘And yet, he who says “evening” says much, A word, from which profundity and sorrow flow’.This composition follows the overall structure of the ballad, which is written in terza rima—interlocking three-line rhymes.The choral work can be performed by a chamber choir, but also by a much larger ensemble. The parts are mainly in four voices (SATB), although there are also six parts (SAATBB). One chord is arranged for eight voices.The composer conducted this work at its première, to open the 2013 International Choir Biennial in Aachen. The choir was comprised of four chamber choirs: Aachen Youth Choir, Carmina Mundi, Aachen Chamber Choir and Aachen Madrigal Choir.
