Composer Philip Glass returned to composition for chamber ensemble after several years of work for films ballet opera and solo instruments. Four Movements For Two Pianos was commissioned by hislong-time advocate the conductor and pianist Dennis Russell Davies and pianist Maki Namakawa and after the success of this piece at the Ruhr Piano Festival the pair decided to continue performing as a duo. The piece can belocated more at the classical end of Glass’ compositional spectrum retaining all the propulsive rhythms arpeggiation and repetitiveness that are the hallmarks of the composer’s work. American composerPhilip Glass is widely known as one of the most celebrated influential and prolific of the modern composers. He is frequently referred to as a minimalist though he prefers to call himself a composer of ‘music withrepetitive structures.’ His operas among them the renowned Einstein On The Beach are performed across the globe and he has created work for small and large ensembles film and experimental theatre and founded his ownperforming group The Philip Glass Ensemble.

orchestrated by Ferde Grofé
edited by Ryan Raul Bañagale. Par GERSHWIN GEORGE. The names of George Gershwin (1898–1937) and Ira Gershwin (1896–1983) are synonymous across the globe with American musical creativity. The Gershwin family estates, their publishers, and the University of Michigan have joined forces to produce The George and Ira Gershwin Critical Edition—the first-ever scholarly edition of the Gershwins’ music and lyrics.
This all-new practical edition facilitates both study and performance, giving a wide audience of musicians, scholars, students, and enthusiasts alike greater insight into the Gershwins’ art. The goal is to create clear and definitive publications that achieve the most accurate representations possible of the Gershwin brothers’ unique and pioneering creativity.
This all-new critical edition of the original 1924 arrangement of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue presents an authoritative transcription of arranger Ferde Grofé’s handwritten holograph score preserved in the collection of the United States Library of Congress in Washington, DC. The edition represents as best as possible the piece as premiered by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra at his 'Experiment in Modern Music' concert on February 12, 1924. Grofé prepared the score for the specific talents and timbres of the Whiteman Orchestra, largely from an ink fair copy of Gershwin’s two-piano short-score manuscript. Gershwin continued to modify the piano solo portion of this short score during rehearsals and, most likely, even after the premiere of the piece. / Date parution : 2023-10-31/ Répertoire / Piano 4 Mains

The Six Easy Pieces arranged by German composer, conductor, and organist Christian Gottlob Neefe (1748--1798) are inspired by the original vocal/orchestral score of The Magic Flute. These pieces are idiomatic piano duets (one piano, four hands) that remain faithful to the original composition. Filled with wit and charm, they contain many of the memorable elements of the opera: Papageno's magic bells, gentle love duets, tenderhearted trios, and lively arias. Based on the 1793 first edition, Neefe's dynamics, articulations, and phrase marks have been preserved. Editorial suggestions have been given in parentheses and footnotes to aid in performance. / Piano 4 Mains

Tango Tzigane - Jealousy-Tango Jalousie (Tango Tzigane - Jealousy) - Jacob Gade's classic arranged for Piano Duet (four hands) by conductor Esther Bobrova Lange. From the Preface: It is a common misconception that Tango Jalousie (Tango Tzigane) was written for the movie ”Don Q”. The piece was also played at the movie premiere in Paladsteatret on September 14th 1925 but there was no jealousy-based drama in the movie. Nonetheless the melody was well suited to the Zorro legend in a Mexican setting. But in the book “Jacob Gade – et eventyr i musik” (a fairytale in music) by Jørgen GramChristensen one learns that in a 1956 interview Jacob Gade recounted the incident in 1925 which concerned him very much: “One day the magazines featured a dramatic description of a jealousy-based murder and the word “jealousy” stood for me as a title with which the music became more and more attached.”There are many different arrangements of “Tango Jalousie” but I have always found that there was a need for a piano four hands version of this wonderful piece. In the process of working out a piano four hands version I used the full orchestra score and made sure that the most essential orchestra parts were included. Also the melody parts and accompaniment are equally distributed between the primo and secondo parts. (Esther Bobrova Lange)

French composer Georges Auric (1899-1983) was a member of Les Six. His compositional career was mainly distinguished by his film music. However his catalogue is varied and 5 Bagatelles is a delightful collection of Four Hand Piano Duets. The Five Bagatelles are; 1) Overture 2) Little March 3) Waltz 4) Dream and 5) Retreat. Suitable for intermediate level pianists Auric's compositions tend to reflect the current music scene in Paris at the time. For all intermediate pianists seeking exciting duet music Auric's 5 Bagatelles provide just that.

Dance Of The Cockerel (Hanedans) from the opera Masquerade by Carl Nielsen arranged for for Piano Duet (4 hands) by Esther Bobrova Lange. Arranger's preface: Dance of the Cockerel is a ballet insertion from Act Three of Carl Nielsen's opera Masquerade it is written for a large symphony orchestra. In this version for piano duet (four hands) I used the full orchestral score making sure that the essential orchestra parts were included. The melodic parts and the accompaniment are equally distributed between the primo and secondo parts. The nuances and articulations are written according to the originalscore yet with consideration to the possibilities of the piano. In one of his letters Carl Nielsen wrote that Dance of the Cockerel is like a polonaise. Presumably he meant that it should be played with pride and dignity in order to characterize a young cockerel surrounded by adoring hens that fight for his favour. (Esther Bobrova Lange)

During the visit to Brive-la-Gaillarde in 1940, Poulenc sketched a little piece for the children of his cousins: Sophie, Sylvie, Benoit, Florence and Delphine Périer, Yvan, Alain, Marie-Christine and Marguerite-Marie Villotte, and their two friends Marthe Bosredon and André Lecoeur. This took the form of a musical background to Jean de Brunhoff's popular illustrated children's story about Babar, a baby elephant whose mother is killed by a huntsman. Fortunately Babar meets a kind elderly lady who dresses him in a fine suit and gives him an impressive motor-car.However, Babar feels homesick for his forests, and is pleased when his cousins, Arthur and Celeste, find him and needs no persuasion to go home with them. Back in the forest, where the King of the Elephants has eaten a poisonous mushroom, Babar is elected to succeed as King. He marries Celeste, and the last we hear of him is thinking of a rosy future as he dreamily looks up at a marvellously star-filled sky.Poulenc's score, to which he returned and completed in 1945, is for a narrator and a Piano, so written that the individual sections offer the pianist a number of self-contained descriptive pieces, such as a Lullaby, a Reverie, a Galop, a Nocturne and so on. Indeed, some of Poulenc's finest Piano music is found in these charming pages. In 1962, Jean Françaix made an orchestral version, and Barbar has been enjoyed by children of all ages all over the world. An English translation of the text was made by Nelly Rieu. This particular edition is arranged for Narrator and Piano duet (1 Piano, 4 hands) and a separate insert with English translation is included. / Piano 4 Mains

Works For Piano Duet-'Flee the storms.' Reynaldo Hahn (1874-1947) put this motto of classical artists at the heart of his music for piano four hands preferring the balance of proportions to the roar of passions the eclecticism of good taste charm and delicacy. Berceuses falls within the French tradition of children's music such as illustrated by Fauré's Dolly and Ravel's Ma mère l’Oye. These seven pieces evoke with refinement the happiness of a cloudless day the effervescence that reigns on Christmas Eve or the gentle syncopated rocking of a young Creole Selfiana. The Variations puériles sur une mélodie de CarlReinecke manifest a free whimsical vein whereas the Trois préludes sur des airs irlandais drink at the pure sources of folk music borrowing their thematic material from the famous collection Songs of Old Ireland which Stanford had brought out in 1882. Published for the first time from a handwritten score the Variations sur un thème de Charles Levadé end with a wild quadrille that takes the heroes of the celebration to the nearest inn. The Pièce en forme d’aria et Bergerie from 1896 finely polished takes up with the ambiance of the pastorale popular in the 17th century.
