An instructional video that starts from the beginning! Clawhammer From Scratch begins as though you really have NO knowledge of how to play the five string banjo clawhammer style. Beginning at the beginning, Dan presents a brief history of the 5-string banjo then goes over the parts of the banjo, holding the banjo, right and left hand styles and his basic clawhammer strum. Even the strum is broken down into the steps of the finger and thumb. Based on Dan's innovative Meet the Banjo(TM) program where Dan brings 15 banjos and teaches players who may have never held a banjo, this video assumes no prior experience. Using one tune, Spotted Pony, you are guided through the chords, the scale and then the individual notes of the tune. This video ends with a few tips and frequently asked questions and even a chance for YOU to play with the fiddle and guitar just like in a private jam session. If you have been looking for that one instructional recording to get you started, this is the one for you. If you already have many books or videos but still can't seem to get the basics, this is the one for you, too! A 2-page pamphlet is included. Picking up where Volume 1 left off, in Volume 2 you will learn to capo up to D tuning, review the basics of the Double Thumb Pony, then head off into the banjo world by learning to drop thumb, hammer-on, pull-off, and slide your way into the Full Blown Pony. Just as in Volume 1, you are guided through the chords, the scale, and then the individual notes of the tune as well as each of the techniques that make Old Time Southern Appalachian clawhammer banjo music as exciting as you have heard. Each technique is taught, then applied to the tune and repeated in easily learnable segments. Par DATESMAN KYLE. Perhaps the first 5-string banjo book of its kind, Renaissance and Elizabethan Music for Banjo consists entirely of music from these early periods and provides banjo players with \'growing material\''that is, the opportunity to play in a number of different keys besides G major. This detail alone will expand your banjo horizon by requiring the use of unusual chord shapes. Written for classical banjo enthusiasts who want to further enhance their musicianship, some selections reveal one of the earliest aspects of music theory, that of modal scales. Various compositional forms and unfamiliar tempos are also introduced in arrangements that will help you become less dependent on the open fifth string. This type of music would be extremely difficult to learn by ear, so a book of tablatures should prove to be invaluable. Every piece is presented first in a vertical chord arrangement, which was the way it was originally intended' and then arranged in a linear horizontal style more familiar to modern players. Every tune is accompanied by performance notes supported by a helpful glossary. Written in tablature only with access to online audio, these pieces also make great finger-limbering exercises! Here is a book of tunes from the Elizabethan era?the great period of English song?set in tablature for the clawhammer banjo. At first glance it is true the songs of Shakespeare?s day and the mountain banjo seem to be worldsapart. But the musical traditions are in fact related as Elizabethan songs are the old world cousins of mountain tunes. As a result Elizabethan tunes are a natural way to extend the mountain banjo repertoire for intermediateand advanced players. Their pedigree their modal feel the lilting rhythms and the ease with which they can be adapted to the banjo argue the case. At the same time they open the possibility for new sounds?in particular newrhythms?for the old instrument pushing the banjo beyond unnatural limitations and giving it a new voice. Each section of the book is organized around a traditional mountain tuning with a mountain song serving as a model of thattuning illuminating the relationship between the two musical worlds. ?The Bard?s Banjo? is the first banjo instruction book devoted to the repertoire of Elizabethan song. The non-jazz improvisation series is a concept that germinated in Dick Weissman's mind while he was attending music school. He wrote a 15-piece arrangement of the old square dance tune Cripple Creek and wanted the trombone totake a solo as part of the arrangement. When the trombonist kept playing a bebop solo that was totally unsuitable for the chart Dick realized that - in addition to the many musicians who do not improvise - there are even jazzmusicians who don't know how to improvise outside the limits of their own stylistic backgrounds. Old-timemusic clawhammer bluegrass and many eclectic adaptations of the banjo are utilized to demonstrate a variety of musical styles. A number of the selections are in different tunings. Par SLATER ALEC. With this volume, the reader is pleasantly surprised with two books in one- Section One by Alec Slater, and Section Two by Lisa Schmitz. Alec's portion is intended as a guide for the clawhammer or frailing banjo player with some previous experience in this style. He stresses the fact that this style of music can be fully learned only from within the oral tradition in which it grew. The instruction included here is meant to provide a review, and not to take the place of qualified teacher. Alec recommends that '...anyone wanting to get this playing right, should find someone in your area who plays and have him/her teach you. Listen to it, watch it, and make it your own.' In Section Two, Lisa Schmits presents an extensive collection of 163 jigs, reels, polkas, hornpipes, strathspeys, waltzes, and songs from Ireland, Scotland, the Shetland Islands, Cape Breton, New England and Southern Appalachia for banjo solo. The national origin of each tune is indicated. Lisa offers personal, authoritative settings of a great variety of tunes at an intermediate level.
