This is a fast, swing chart that is a feature for tenor saxophone. The soloist gets to blow in a free-form setting, or the soloing can be done in time with the rhythm section. The rest of the band plays a neat, tight introduction to the improvisation, and they follow the solo with the same swinging, nifty music as the front end. This is a clever, hip, piece that makes a great addition to any program..... especially if your brass section needs a rest. Les recorded this with his wonderful band on Live at Typhoon. 5-4-4-4.

A rare and beautiful chart from the Glenn Miller Orchestra, this chart was originally scored by Bill Finegan and is his iterpretation of Tschaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. The arrangement is full of tonal and dynamic contrast, with a mix of raw brass energy and muted sectional playing, with some lush scoring in all the sections and of course the famous Miller reed sound with plunger brass figures behind the reed section. The piano has a couple of solo spots, but the chart is not a piano feature. The brass ranges are not too demanding, the second alto doubles clarinet, and baritone doubles alto. As with all Miller charts, precision and sectional discipline is required.

Stan Kenton had a certain touch in his arranging that stood out. He took a simple, slow-swinging approach to this great Neal Hefti tune, and it was one of the most popular charts played by the band in the 1970's. Piano takes the melody, while the trombones set the harmonic and rhythmic groove. This is a wonderful piece to program, becasue it is so different than most charts. 5-5-5-3.

As recorded by the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra (and included in the Mosaic CDs The Complete Roulette Recordings of the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra), this is one of those charts that escaped notice for many, many years. Don Sebesky, one of the world's premier arrangers, took a magnificant Rolf Ericson tune and created an arrangement unlike anything you've heard before. The melody is stated by alto saxophone and trumpet, weaving in and out of various textures created by muted brass. The waltz feel begins to accelerate and rise at a climactic point where the melody is once again taken over by a solo trumpet and alto saxophone. Surprisingly, brass ranges are moderate. If you wish to program a piece which will have a very unique flavor and great audience appeal, this would be the chart! 5-4-4-3 (opt. original instrumentation available as 4-4-2-3).

This Oliver Nelson melody was originally recorded with a small group. Bob Curnow took this great tune and arranged it for big band in a very hip way! Set in an easy swing feel, this chart has quite a bluesy feel to it while providing a nice variation to the standard blues changes that you might not expect. There is solo space for alto saxophone, trombone and piano. In this pro (original) version, you will find Oliver Nelson's amazing solo transcribed and arranged as a trumpet soli. Bob Curnow took Ken Hanna's wonderful, latin, medium-tempo tune and made it a bit more accessible for good bands. The ranges are a bit more realistic and practical. This also features alto sax and trumpet (not trombone as originally arranged). The original version is recorded on the Live at Butler University CD. 5-5-5-3 (can be played with only 8 brass).
