This is the
latest â?? and 7th â??
in an a cappella series
going back three decades
in which the texts are
taken from Shakespeare's
plays. â??Come Unto
These Yellow Sandsâ?
is a gentle invitation to
the listener, at least
until the animals take
over. â??Thou Canst Not
Hit It,â? in this
interpretation, is a song
about trying to hit the
high and low notes.
Surrounded by comedy and
tragedy, â??Honour,
Riches,
Marriage-Blessingâ? is
the idyllic center of the
set. â??O Sweet
Oliver,â? with its
dueling boy and girl
choirs, leads into
â??Willow, Willow,â?
where the poem's word
repetitions inspire the
driving rhythm.

With over
six hundred songs (
Lieder.) to his name,
Franz Schubert was one fo
the most prolific and
gifted composers of the
genre who ever lived. His
wonderful sense of
beautiful melody pervades
much of his
music--symphonic, stage
and opera, choral,
chamber, and piano solos
and duets. A devout
Catholic and former
Vienna Boys Choir singer,
he composed six Latin
settings of the Mass as
well as settings of the
Salve Regina, Tantum
Ergo., and numerous other
works. Schubert's
Antiphons for Palm
Sunday., Opus 113, are a
set of four easy
liturgical motets for a
cappella .choir. A
singable English
translation is provided
with the original Latin.
The four Gregorian chant
compositions for the same
Sunday are also provided
in Latin and English.
Hosanna Filio David .is
sung for the blessing of
the palms. The responsory
In Monte Oliveti .can be
sung between the Epistle
reading and the Gospel,
followed by Pueri
Hebraeorum .for the
distribution of the palms
and Cum Angelis. for the
procession of the
palms.--Dr. William

Jesus
Reassures His Mother is a
setting of medieval lyric
poetry written
anonymously in the 14th
century. The poet
recounts a vision of the
young Mary rocking the
infant Christ to sleep.
The child requests his
mother to sing a lullaby
but, alas, knowing her
child’s fate she is too
sad to sing. Jesus tells
her that all mothers
worry about their
children’s futures and
insists that she should
sing nevertheless. Mary
recounts the visit of
Gabriel and the events of
Christ’s birth but
reflects how sad it is to
have delivered a child to
such a fate. Jesus
reassures his mother that
he will be with his
father in heaven where
Mary will come to join
Him at the end of time,
there to livein eternal
bliss. At this point Mary
is persuaded by and
echoes her child’s
reassuring words, and she
is joined in this by the
choir (now representing
us all). The vision fades
away in the voice of the
narrator whose loneliness
and longing return. We
learn that it is
Christmas Day. This
setting grows from the
visionary mystical world
inhabited by Julian of
Norwich whose Revelations
of Divine Love provided
the inspiration for a
work Anne Boyd composed
in 1994. The medium has
been expanded from the
Song Company’s six solo
voices used in the
Revelations to the double
motet choir of the Sydney
Philharmonia who
commissioned this work
for their 75th
anniversary. The parts of
the infant Jesus, Mary,
the Narrator and the
angel Gabriel are taken
by choir soloists:
soprano, alto, tenor and
bass. The work is
situated in the context
of Boyd ’s personal
musical aesthetic which
she describes as the
intersection of Christian
Love with Buddhist
silence.

Incl
uded in the Oxford Book
of Ballads and ascribed
to an anonymous
15th-century author, the
tale of Joly Joly Wat the
shepherd who offers the
infant Christ his 'pipe,
skirt, tarbox and scripe'
is among the best-loved
of traditional Christmas
verses. Its musical
reference offers an
obvious attraction to
composers, and in Bryan
Kelly's new setting a
sprightly ritornello
embellished with trills
is the musical
counterpart to the young
herdsman's musical
instrument on which 'he
made such joy.'
Written for Simon
Williams and the Harrow
Choral Society, Joly
Joly Wat brings a
fresh and lively note to
seasonal choral concerts.
The vocal writing is
clear and
straightforward, with
occasional division of
the sopranos, and an
incisive and syncopated
style that matches the
shepherd-boy's haste to
leave his flock and his
faithful dog keeping his
'shepe fro ye corn' in
order to visit the
new-born Jesus.

As many will
soon notice, this Irish
melody is most famous
with the words to O Danny
Boy, a favorite with
performers and audiences
alike. The text, I Would
Be True, by Howard Arnold
Walter, gives new depth
and meaning to this
lovely tune. As is usual
with music that comes
from the people, or folk
music, a wide range of
interpretations is
possible. This setting
should incorporate the
conductors sense of
timing in the use of
rubato, ritards,
accelerandos, crescendos
and diminuendos, all
toward the end of
elucidating the text to
its fullest
extent.

Betteridge's
dramatic paraphrase of
this famous Christmas
carol communicates the
message of the text in a
miniature comedic drama.
Staging directions are
designed to allow
considerable latitude in
interpretation and
adaptation. The essence
of this work comes into
focus throught the
characters of the King
and his page boy as the
King instructs the boy
about caring for others
in need. The choral parts
are not difficult but
require careful attention
to dramatic pacing. This
will make an excellent
addition to any music

A solo
violin begins this
setting with the familiar
Hamburg hymn tune. But
the choir's entrance
reveals that the hymn's
well-known lyrics are
being sung to the
“O Waly Walyâ€
tune (“O Danny
Boyâ€). These two
beloved melodies will
take turns as the
intensity increases.
Following the dramatic
climax the music
gradually quiets to a
reflective
conclusion.
