A
New World is a
musical story across five
movements with texts by
authors from Cicero and
Ovid to George William
Russel; from nursery
rhymes to war
poets.
The music
and texts link to form a
narrative that questions
what sort of ?New Worlds?
have come into existence,
or could be created in
our future, and considers
how we balance human
traits of fear,
displacement, isolation
and conflict with equally
human traits of love,
hope, forgiveness and
unity.
1. On
History
An
opening movement for SATB
choir, piano and timpani
(with solos for soprano,
tenor and alto). A calm
opening leads to a
dramatic conclusion with
text by Cicero and Ovid
in praise and recognition
of their
homeland.

Man that is
born of woman hath but a
short time to live is one
of the central biblical
texts dealing with the
transitoriness of human
existence. Leopold
Hofmann, Kapellmeister at
St. Stephen's Cathedral
in Vienna from 1772 to
1793, where W. A. Mozart
was his church music
assistant, also set this
strongly expressive text.
Hofmann's setting, in C
minor, offers an austere
harmony, characterized by
suspensions in a
homophonic,
through-composed
four-part vocal setting
(soloists or SATB choir),
reinforced only by two
trombones and organ
continuo. Four concise
instrumental transitional
passages between the
individual verses relieve
the pathos laden Viennese
church style of this
composition. With its
tragic air, in some
passages it closely
resembles Mozart's
Requiem K. 626. For this
first edition, the two
trombone parts are
available both in the
original clef and in alto
clef. The figured bass
has been realized so that
the piece can also be
performed without
trombones, with only
organ accompaniment. For
a performance this piece
could easily be combined
with the Salve Regina by
Pietro Cassati (Carus
27.703) from the Vienna
series. Score and parts

Text: Baudelaire,
Charles.
Sounds,
colors and scents can
conjure up places of
longing. During the
Romantic period, the
desire to travel and see
other places was seen as
an expression of some
inner state of mind. In
L'invitation au voyage,
the boundaries between
what is real and
imaginary seem to
dissolve in the lyrical
perception of a journey
to the inner self: There
we find nothing but order
and beauty, splendor,
peace, and
delightâ€. This is
unattainable perfection
as a place of longing,
where we are freed from
all earthly cares. A
never-ending
sixteenth-note figure in
the piano accompaniment
flickers like a
shimmering veil over
these words, which in
their poetry seem to
remove us far from our
earthly existence.
“The world falls
asleep in a warm
light!
This art
song was originally
composed not for chamber
choir, but for solo voice
and piano. Denis Rouger
has carefully adapted it
to suit the requirements
and expressive
possibilities offered by
a larger ensemble,
without losing any of the
qualities of the
original. Each part in
the choir has a melodic
line drawn from the
harmonic and rhythmic
framework. In the
process, the variety and
refinement of the choral
language combines with an
enormous flexibility in
form and expression, as
French melodies or German
art songs demand from a
soloist and
pianist.
The songs
have been recorded by the
figure humaine chamber
choir on the CD ... wo

The
history of the
composition of the
oratorio is odd: the
kernel of this three-part
work were the movements
from the middle section,
the Flight to Egypt,
which Berlioz composed on
a whim in 1850 and which
he passed off as the work
of a baroque composer
whose existence he
himself had invented. In
1854 the triptych, which
was completed with the
parts entitled The dream

celebrated first
performance. Starting
from the Gospel of St.
Matthew, with the visit
of the astrologer to
Herodes and the flight of
the Holy Family to Egypt,
Berlioz chose to relate
the story of the events
of Christmas from another
angle. This skillful

six-verse hymn is based
on the melody Herzlich
tut mich verlangen, which
Buxtehude used both for
the solo cantata Herzlich
tut mich verlangen BuxWV
42 and for a chorale
prelude entitled Ach
Herr, mich armen Sunder
BuxWV 178. Apart from the
Amen, with coloratura
decoration, the text is
set in a simple four-part
texture. The accompanying
violins are used in the
prelude and interludes.
This piece exists in a
tabulatur copied by Duben
before June 1687. Score
