Composed during the summer of 1988. Commissioned by The Norwegian Brass Band Club First performed in the Grieg Hall¬? at the 10th Anniversary Concert for the Norwegian Championship Bergen February 1989. EBML conducted by Michael Antrobus. The work is important for me because it was my first piece to be played outside Norway. Black Dyke/David King performed it and did a recording of it in 1991. The composer: In the original score I quote a Swedish bishop (Olaus Mangnus) who lived in the 15th century. He travelled around Scandinavia and drew maps - very important historic material. When he came to the north of Norway (where I come from) hedescribed the wind from the north as Ciricus: (something like) Worst of all winds is Circius that revolves(?= turn upside down) heaven and earth. (Well not a good translation I¬?m afraid). The fast sections reflects the mighty winds from the north. In the middle section I borrowed a folksong-like tune (by C. Elling a norwegian composer). The text (by Kristoffer Janson) tells about old times when the fishermen used open boats: they had to put their lives in the hands of God. De opening en het slot van dit werk beschrijven 'Circius' de wind die hemel en aarde verwoest. Het middendeel is een bewerking van het Noorse volkslied 'The fisherman's speech to his son'. De inhoud van het lied komt overeen met Circius. De vader verzoekt zijn zoon de krachten van de natuur te trotseren maar bovenal te respecteren. Een kort doch spectaculair concertwerk dat het gehele orkest in de greep heeft.

In ‘A Summer Holiday’ Patrick Millstone takes us with him on a journey. After a year’s hard work we may finally enjoy a well-earned holiday. The first part of this three-part composition has the appropriate title ‘On Tour’. When we chose our holiday destination the brochure said that it would be bathed in sunlight every day. Unfortunately this turns out not to be the case. Somewhat melancholically we play round games in our summer house on a ‘Rainy Day’. However the next day when the sun again has driven away all the clouds we naturally visit the ‘Crowded Beach’ where we enjoy both sun sea and beach once again.

The Fanfare For The Common Man came about in the summer of 1942 when Eugene Goosens approached eighteen American composers to contribute patriotic fanfares for performance by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Ten of these pieces were written for percussion and brass alone. The works do not only enrich the literature for brass and percussion but to pay tribute to all those involved in World War II.

This cheerful six movement suite for brass quintet employs dance rhythms and themes throughout. With plenty of interplay between the instruments this is approachable and rewarding music for both performer and audience alike.

The Ketchup Song-The Ketchup Song was a big 2002 summer hit for the Munoz sisters. The band is made up of three sisters Lol Lucia and Pilar who are the daughters of a famous Spanish flamenco musician called Tomate (hence Ketchup!). This fabulous arrangement will bring a taste of summer on the Costa to any concert.

François Glorieux was born in Belgium in 1932, and acclaimed throughout Europe, the USA, Latin America, Canada, Japan, China, the Middle East and Africa. He is one of the most widely accomplished and versatile musicians traveling the international circuit today: pianist composer conductor, commentator, entertainer, honorary professor of chamber music at the Royal Music Conservatory of Ghent and guest professor at Yale University (USA). His particular art was the rare one of improvisation presented in five languages. Glorieux practices all musical styles and has been highly considered by great artists such as André Cluytens, Arthur Rubinstein, Yves Nat, Hiroyuki Iwaki, Enrique Jorda, Raphael Frühbeck de Burgos, but also Michael Jackson, Stan Kenton, Stéphane Grappelli, Paul McCartney, Toots Thielemans, Jacky Collins, Annie Girardot, Dionne Warwick, A.C. Studio-Pop est une pièce en cinq mouvements. 1. Marching on a String (?En marchant sur une corde?) est une marche aux inflexions de rock qui affirme un rythme dynamique et moderne. 2. Dreaming of Summer (?Rêves d?été?) est écrit dans un chiffrage de mesure assez inhabituel dans la musique pop la mesure à 3/4. 3. Chicken Charley est inspiré d?un souvenir de vacances sur la Côte d?Azur où le compositeur a été impressionné par un jeune Antillais vendeur de grillades de cuisses de poulet. La souplesse de ses mouvements transparaît dans la musique fortement dansante. 4. Candlelight (?À la lueur d?une bougie?) est une ballade gracieuse etmoderne qui pourrait servir de toile de fond à un dîner charmant. Les harmonisations sont passionnantes mais trouvent toujours leur résolution dans une atmosphère romantique. 5. Discoteca vous plonge dans la vie nocturne d?une discothèque espagnole. Les accords typiquement espagnols et le rythme exaltant créent un finale exubérant.

The composer:1st movement: Reflections by the Fjord.Overlooking one of the mighty fjords of Norway my mind and thoughts are with an old religious Norwegian folk-tune with words by the famous parson Peter Dass.The majestic fanfare-likeopening reflects the power of God our Father the choral itself heard for the first time on flugelhorn. The choral is repeated a few times separated only by some short variations. The movement ends in thriumph with fanfares and the choral broughttogether.2nd movement: Reflections in the Old Church.In this movement my associations of a summer day finding myself alone in an old deserted stone church. From the old walls I hear folk songs perhaps like the ones sung in the church bypoor fishermen and farmers in days gone by. Suddenly the light from the sun breakes through the small circular window above the altar and a lovely melody is heard before the original figures take us to the end of the movement.3rd movement:Festive Reflections.Any festive occasion can be reflected in this movement. from the bonfire at midsummer-night to the children celebrating the return of the sun in the northern part of Norway. from the traditional sleigh-riding at Christmas tothe Celebrations of the National Day on the 17th of May each year.

Shelter Island is a small island situated near the end of Long Island a few hours drive east of New York. In the summer it becomes a crowded tourist trap but in the winter it is gloriously deserted and bravely faces the onslaught of the turbulent Atlantic shrouded in sea mists and driving rain. This brass band transcription by Phillip Littlemore is of the first movement of East Coast Pictures originally written for wind band and was commissioned in 1985 by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from National Westminster Bank plc. These three short ‘pictures’ were inspired by several visits by the composer to a small part of the USA’sEast Coast an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people.

Par SCHJELDERUP FREDRICK. Tension is a thematic work for brass band, commissioned by Eikanger-Bjørsvik Musikklag for their Summer Band Camp (called Feriespel) in 2014. The theme is moved around in various groups in the band, surrounded by different rhythms, time signatures and cluster chords.
