Symphonie no. 1 The Lord of the Rings [Le Seigneur des Anneaux] La première symphonie de Johan de Meij “The Lord of the Rings” [Le Seigneur des Anneaux] est basée sur la trilogie romanesque du même nom de J.R.R. Tolkien. Depuis leur parution en 1955, ces livres ont fasciné des millions de lecteurs dans le monde entier. La symphonie est composée de cinq mouvements séparés illustrant chacun un personnage ou un épisode important de ce grand succès littéraire. L’oeuvre est écrite pour orchestre d’harmonie, avec des parties réservées au saxophone soprano, au bugle et au piano. Les différentes parties sont intitulées : I. GANDALF (The Wizard) [Le Magicien] II. LOTHLORIEN (The Elvenwood) [La Forêt des Elfes] III. GOLLUM (Sméagol) IV. JOURNEY IN THE DARK [Voyage dans les Ténèbres] a. The Mines of Moria [Les Mines de la Moria] b. The Bridge of Khazad-Dûm [Le Pont de Khazad-Dûm] V. HOBBITS La symphonie a été écrite entre mars 1984 et décembre 1987 et a eu sa première à Bruxelles le 15 mars 1988, interprétée par la Musique Royale des Guides Belges sous la direction de Norbert Nozy. En 1989, la Symphonie LE SEIGNEUR DES ANNEAUX remporte le premier prix du Concours International de Composition Sudler à Chicago. Par DE HAAN JACOB. Everest is the name of a restaurant on the 40th floor of a skyscraper in Chicago. In 2003 the composer Jacob de Haan had dinner there together with his publishers and other fellow composers. The idea of composing a march to honour the excellent cuisine, the magnificent view of the skyline and the pleasant atmosphere in the restaurant arose during the visit. In imitation of the huge ‘House rage’ (at the end of the eighties) John Emerson Blackstone composed ‘House of Dance’ for youth orchestra. It proved to be a success. House owes its name to the place where this music was ‘developed’ i.e. an old night club called ‘The Warehouse’ in Chicago. Many subcultures followed. Whether you like the style or not one thing is certain: House music (also called Dance music) for many provides the basis for hours of fun on the dance floor.

A unique work from the Chicago-based group Mucca Pazza (translation “Mad Cow”) a 30 piece troupe of musicians performing as an outrageous on and off stage marching band. Their work Surf is a concoction ofmemorable bass riffs oddities and sounds. Tom Wallace captures all the intricacies of this piece in what is sure to be one of the most fun marching band arrangements yet to be performed.

Written in a relaxed tempo and easy going style this Chicago hit features low brass on the verse and solid scoring for the full band.

John has skillfully used a variety of styles and tempos in creating this very effective opener/production number. The opening section is fast and furious before switching to a medium swing groove. There is even a brief bump andgrind before returning to the fast tempo and ending with a flourish!

One of the highlights from the movie is this distinctive and moderately paced dance feature. Woodwinds and horns get a chance to shine on this one!
