As the title
suggests, this opening
work consists of a
fanfare and a hymn. This
work was written for the
opening ceremony of the
FIS Nordic World Ski
Championships in
Oberstdorf (Allgäu,
Germany) and can be
played in four different
versions depending on
your needs or the players
available. You can use a
complete version, a short
fanfare played just by
trumpets (cornets),
trombones and timpani, a
double fanfare (extended
with tutti-band) or a
fanfare version followed
by the hymn. Nordic
Fanfare and Hymn is an
extremely practical and
versatile ceremonial
opening
piece.

Hora
Est! (Latin for
‘it is
time!’) was
composed to bid adieu to
Sjoerd de Boer’s
following forty years as
conductor of the Chr.
Fanfare Band, based in
the town of Wjelsryp in
the Netherlands. In the
Netherlands, this small
phrase, hora est, is
traditionally said upon
awarding a university
doctorate at graduation
ceremonies. The
composition was written
with Sjoerd de Boer
firmly in mind, mirroring
various aspects of his
life. The main motif of
the work consists of
three notes, forming his
initials: S (Eb) D B. At
a certain point, the
music is interrupted by a
thunderstorm and heavy
rain (forever a bad omen:
the debut for this work
took place a day after
such a deluge, but
fortunately their
open-air concert was met
with clear blue skies.)
The fanfare then plays an
Italianesque march, with
the motif of de
Boer’s initials
interwoven throughout.
The work re-uses this
motif twice towards the
end of the piece as one
might expect, by the
saxophones to create a
festive, driven and
virtuosic atmosphere.
Finally, the work comes
to an end with the
initials motif played
across the ensemble in
complete unison. The
powerful closing chords
symbolise a fond farewell
to de Boer: a driven and
extremely capable
conductor whose musical
mark on Concordia will be
felt for years to come.
Hora Est! is
suitable as a contest
piece and would be a
definite highlight for
any upcoming
concert.

Feelings is a
well-known easy listening
hit that was written
halfway through the
1970s, by the Brazilian

Albert. However, the
melody is derived from a

this claim successfully.
Over the years, Feelings

Albastum is a
proud, stately concert
march written in classic
A-B-A form. It opens with
a festive fanfare in the
brass section, followed
by a lively, bright

melodious trio, a counter
theme develops and the
march comes to an

Albastum
is een majestueuze
concertmars. Stijn Roels
schreef hem in de

A-B-A form. It opens with
a festive fanfare in the
brass section, followed
by a lively, bright
theme, symbolising the
joy of playing music
together at each weekly
rehearsal. Following a
melodious trio, a counter
theme develops and the
march comes to an
exciting close with a
reprise of the original
theme.
Albastum
is een majestueuze
concertmars. Stijn Roels
schreef hem in de
klassieke A-B-A-vorm. De
vreugde die muzikanten
aan musiceren beleven,
komt bijzonder goed tot
uitdrukking. Orkestrale
wisselingen tussen de bas
en de discantin het
eerste deel laten de
bijzondere klankkleuren
van de verschillenden
instrumentgroepen goed
zien. Een melodieus trio
en de reprise van deel A
ronden de mars af. Echt
zo’n mars waaraan
iedereen plezier
beleeft!
In diesem
stolzen,
majestätischen
Konzertmarsch, der in
einer klassischen
A-B-A-Form geschrieben
ist, kommt die Freude
aller Musiker an ihrem
Spiel zum Ausdruck.
Orchestrale Wechsel
zwischen Bass und Diskant
im ersten Teil heben die
besonderen Klangfarben
der einzelnen
Instrumentengruppen sehr
schön hervor. Ein
melodiöses Trio und
die Reprise von Teil A
runden diesen Marsch ab,
der dem gesamten
Fanfareorchester und
Publikum Freude bringen
wird!

This stately
concert opener was
originally written by Jan
Van der Roost for a
special event in which
six respected wind
orchestras (two Belgian
and four Dutch) of
different composition
(two symphonic bands, two
fanfare bands and two
brass bands) were
featured during six
concerts. Each evening
brought forth a
performance by a
symphonic band, a
fanfare, and brass band,
so that the audience
could experience all
three types of ensembles.
This was indeed an
original concept.The
name, ConZEnSus, comes
from a combination of the
words, ‘Concert
Cyclus’ (concert
series) and
‘zes’ (Dutch
for ‘six’).
This leads to a new word,
which refers to
‘consensus’.
The general tenor of the
cycle isthus immediately
indicated. The richness
of color of the various
ensembles is revealed
through an open and
friendly atmosphere.
During all six concerts
(over a span of three
years), ConZEnSus
functioned as a permanent
opening number for each
orchestra. Thus the same
musical story was
portrayed in three
different packages.

On a war
memorial in the Dutch
village of Wons is
engraved a list of names
to honour the fallen in
World War II. This is the
basis for the name of
this piece. However, this
composition was written
for everyone who has made
Wons what it is today: a
pretty place near to Lake
IJssel with a
comfortable way of life.
The piece begins with a
celebratory introduction
in which the village is
presented to the
listener. There follows a
delightful rhythmic and
high-tempo theme that
reflects the happiness,
innocence and carefree
atmosphere before the
war. Now we hear a moody,
fragmented theme
depicting soldiers
shooting. This is brought
to a close with dissonant
clusters of
sound,intoning the
dreadful tragedy of the
war. The ensuing quiet
gives way to a calm
middle section in a minor
key that portrays both
frustration and
consolation. The fast
tempo of the beginning
returns, this time in the
form of a victory march.
We hear freedom being
celebrated. We hear the
previous happy, innocent
and carefree themes, too.
There follows a festive,
martial theme, a tribute
to the village, before
the piece closes with
sounds of celebration.

compositie begint met een

het dorp zich presenteert

klinkt een aansprekend
ritmisch thema in een
snel tempo dat de
vrolijkheid,
onbevangenheid en
onbezorgdheid van voor de
oorlog uitstraalt. Dit
gaat over in een melodie
in mineur, die het
naderendeoorlogsgevaar
aankondigt. Dan is er een
grillig thema met stops
waarin het schieten van
de soldaten te horen is.
Dit eindigt in enkele
dissonante clusters die
het tragische dieptepunt
van de oorlog
accentueren. De
daaropvolgende stilte

thema van de vrolijkheid,

een eerbetoon aan het
dorp, waarna het werk
wordt afgesloten met

The Other
Side was written as a
farewell to a loved one.
Following the melancholy
theme of mourning in a
minor key we also hear
the happy memories in
major key and also the
knowledge that the person
who has gone to ‘a
better place’ is
now at peace. This is a
soulful and calm work
that leaves plenty of
space for the
musicians’ and
listeners’ own
thoughts. This set

The Other
Side is geschreven
als afscheid van een
geliefde persoon. Behalve
het melancholische
mineurthema komen in dit
werk ook mooie
herinneringen in majeur
naar voren. Bovendien
klinkt in de muziek de
hoop door dat de
betreffende persoon nueen

gevoelige, rustige werk
laat muzikanten en

The Other Side è

tema malinconico del
lutto in tonalità
minore, arriva il suono
dei bei ricordi in

period of four decades
Jimmy Webb (b. 1946) has
written hits for a number
of singers including Glen

are often epic in
character and include By

MacArthur Park (1968) was

an extended orchestral

recording topped the
music charts in Europe,
while peaking at number
two on the U.S. charts.

MacArthur

bijzonder. Richard

Verenigde Staten. Philip

fantastisch arrangement
dat zowel uw

zal

der Hits von großen
Stars wie Frank Sinatra,

gelang Webb ein Riesenhit
im Jahr 1968. Das Lied
über eine verlorene
Liebe ist ungewöhnlich
lang für einen Popsong
und enthält ein
ausgearbeitetes
Orchester-Zwischenspiel.
Grund genug für Philip

Blasorchester zu

As the title
suggests, this work is a
partita: it consists of a
number of variations on a
chorale melody. The
partita has been popular
for centuries, especially
when it comes to organ
music. Henk van Belcum,
who is active in the
choir world, chose for
his Partita Piccola the
German hymn Wunderbarer
König as a starting
point. Partita Piccola
consists of four
variations and a choral
setting. After a majestic
opening fanfare, the
second variation follows,
based on a canon by
Pachelbel.
Händel’s
Sarabande is the basis of
the third variation. Next
comes the chorale
setting, after which the
work ends festively with
a dance that has been
written in the form of a
courante. PartitaPiccola
is an asset for church
