This is an updated edition of Francis Poulenc's 1957 work Sonata For Flute And Piano, edited by Carl Schmidt. Featuring the full score and separate Clarinet part, this exclusive edition also includes a download card, giving you instant online access to demonstration and accompaniment tracks. After having begun a Sonata for Flute as early as 1952, questions arose over whether Poulenc would be able to complete this work on top of his various other compositions at the time. The piece was, thankfully, finally finished after being commissioned by Harold Spivacke, the Chief of the Music Division of the Library of Congress, for a festival in honour of Elizabeth Coolidge. The world premiere, at Poulenc's request, took place at the Strasbourg Music Festival, performed by renowned flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal, while the American premiere took place in the Coolidge Auditorium at the Library of Congress. This new edition includes an extensive introduction to the piece, a detailing of the different sources that were used, and the inherent difficulty of compiling such an edition as this, all in English, French and German. Furthermore, an in-depth discussion of the problems of authority, as well as a vast number of critical notes is included, giving a true sense of the care and attention that has gone into producing this new edition of Poulenc's Sonata For Flute And Piano. At all points, Schmidt has aimed to reproduce an authoritative and accurate score that is at once playable and a reflection of what Poulenc himself may have intended. What makes this edition of Sonata For Flute And Piano really special is the unique download card that provides exclusive online access to demonstration and accompaniment audio tracks. Professionally-recorded by renowned flautist Michael Cox and pianist Huw Watkins, the demonstration track allows you to hear exactly how the piece as a whole should sound, before the independent Piano-only track lets you take the place of the flautist in your very own performance. This is a unique opportunity for flautists to learn from an authoritative score, and play along to a special backing track, with a work that, since its premiere, has become one of the most frequently-performed and well-loved works in the Flute repertoire. For flautist fans of Francis Poulenc, lovers of Les Six, or just players with a proclivity for stunning music, this edition of Sonata For Flute And Piano has been a long-time coming, and now it's available in this unique edition with accompanying download card. / Flûte Et Piano

Petite Suite?for Flute and Piano is a piece written for the Paris Conservatoire contest by Pierre Petit. Really melodious it lasts eight minutes and is divided into three distinct movements. The first part ?Gai et allant? is quite fast and has to be played joyfully. It uses the whole range of the instrument with some really high notes and includes a Cadenza.? The second part ?Lent et très chanté? is slower slightly lower in range and really melodious. It is quite short compared to the other parts.? The third and final movement has the same kind of range as the first one. Fast it features apart to be played at Marzuka tempo and one to be played at the same tempo than the beginning. The piece ends on a really high trill. Petite Suite?is really enjoyable to play and to listen to. It however requires some strong skills in terms of technique and sonority that would be acquired by advanced players: the difficulty is therefore rated at 7°.

The four songs arranged here manifest composer Richard Rodney Bennett?s omnivorous musical sourcework. La belle Au Pied De La Tour was set by Poulenc in his Chansons Francaises. L?amour De Moi is an old Gallic tune that entered the French popular song canon with recordings in the 1970?s by several French singers. La Chaine was frequently sung by chanteuse Damia over the decades of her career from the early 1900?s onward. La Pauvre Mariée tells of the hardships of marriage but is set to a jolly gigue. Movements may be played separately.Composer performer and arranger Richard Rodney Bennett was internationally respected for his serious music and many award-winning film scores(Murder on the Orient Express Nicholas and Alexandra) as well as his works for children and his religious pieces. In addition this markedly versatile musician frequently performed as a jazz pianist and arranger.

Susan Milan discovered the charming Popp Sonatinas Op. 388 while researching 19th century flute repertoire in the British Museum Library. These beautifully crafted works are all without exception a delight to play and suitable for a broad level of player. They are a lovely example of Classical style and detailed in a way that makes them a joy to perform and as they are less than 10 minutes long they are a perfect addition to a short recital programme.Wilhelm Popp studied with the great Louis Drouet in the 1850's and wrote many charming works for the flute this among them. Susan Milan acclaimed soloist and teacher has edited this elegant edition.SusanMilan writes....'I discovered the charming Popp Sonatinas Op. 388 while researching 19th century flute repertoire in the British Museum Library. They were first published in Hamburg in 1888. These beautifully crafted works are all without exception a delight to play and suitable for a broad level of player. They are a lovely example of Classical style and detailed in a way that makes them a joy to perform and as they are less than 10 minutes long they are a perfect addition to a short recital programme. In editing the Sonatinas I have tidied some of the articulation making the flute part consistent. Discrepancies between markings in the flute and piano part have been corrected. I have occasionally added some slurs where I feel the lyrical nature of a section might be enhanced shown as 'dotted' slurs. Where staccati appear to be missing I have added them. I have not on the whole added expression marks. I have not changed or removed original markings.'

Spring has finally arrived. The days grow longer, birds prepare to nest, trees turn green and plants begin to bloom as nature wakes up from her winter sleep. This, and the fact that the composer's third grandson was born in the spring, were the inspiration for Spring Song

In a letter dating from 1777 Mozart reported to his father from Mannheim that Johann Baptist Wendling principal Flautist of the famous Mannheim Orchestra had been approached by a wealthy Dutch businessman by the name of De Jean who was prepared to pay 200 gulden for three easy flute concertos and four flute quartets for his own use. Mozart accepted the commission. By the day before the Dutchman left Mozart had delivered only three of the quartets andtwo concertos for which he had been paid 964 gulden. The composer who was himself being pressed by his father to continue his own journey to Paris with his mother was full of excuses writing back to Salzburg on 14 February 'It is not surprising I have been unable to finish them for I never have a single hour's quiet here...Moreover you know I become quite powerless when I am obliged to write for an instrument I can't stand.' There is more than a hint of disingenuousness in Mozart's words for this was the height of the period during which he was being distracted from his work by his new-found love for the Mannheim singer Aloysia Weber. (He ultimatelymarried her sister Constanze.) If Mozart's dislike of the Flute was as great as he claimed there are few signs in the Flute Concerto No.1 in G major particularly in the expressive central Adagio ma non troppo. The outermovements are an Allegro maestoso and a concluding Rondo: Tempo di Menuetto. The work is scored for two oboes (replaced by flutes in the Adagio) two horns and strings. This Great Performers' Edition is edited byJames Galway.
