It is important to remember that risque music was considered more daring and controversial than today and audiences at its 1875 debut were resistant to its unconventional charms, but it eventually became a crowd pleaser. Havanaise is among the most challenging of violin and orchestra pieces, but a standard showpiece in the repertoire of every serious violinist. Based on the Cuban dance, Habanera, the 1887 work features a languid mood, highlighted by bursts of virtuoso activity. Camille Saint-Saëns was justifiably proud of his Symphony No. 3 in C minor op. 78, dedicated to the memory of Franz Liszt. Like Beethoven’s Ninth, this so-called “Organ Symphony” was commissioned by the Philharmonic Society in London, where itreceived its premiere on 19 May 1886. In this first scholarly-critical edition of the symphony, a great many inconsistencies and mistakes inherent in the previously used edition have been unveiled and corrected. The edition of Symphony No. 3 marks the launch of a large-scale project: the publication of “Camille Saint-Saëns - Complete Edition of the Instrumental Works”. Symphonic poem after a poem by Henri Cazalis. Par SAINT-SAENS CAMILLE. Saint-Saëns was a great admirer of the symphonic poems by Franz Liszt. His own symphonic poem 'Danse macabre' reflects not only his affinity to medieval superstitions but also constitutes a tribute to Liszt's 'Totentanz'. 'Danse macabre' is based on the eponymous song Saint-Saëns composed in 1872 after Henri Cazalis' poem. At its premiere, the work was not well-received: in fact it was booed, possibly due to the 'diabolic' solo violin playing on an E-string that was tuned down to E-flat, which the audience might have misinterpreted as being out of tune. However within ten years the work had become so popular that Saint-Saëns quoted some of its musical themes in 'The Carnival of the Animals'.
