Full Score-Full orchestra score for Per NørgÃ¥rd's Symphony No. 5 (1987-90 rev.1991). Manuscript copy. Programme note: My 5th Symphony was commissioned by the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and premiered on December 6th 1990 by and dedicated to the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. After the premiere in 1990 I decided to revise the beginning (and only the beginning) of the work. The first pages of the score were discarded and about 20 seconds of new music was written in the summer of 1991. The new and final versionwas premiered on 1st of May 1992. The symphony progresses without pauses between movements often in several layers of tempo with mutual ´golden section´proportions. The listener´s experience of form in the work will therefore depend on the directions of his own attention. But so far as overall divisions are concerned four sections (perhaps five) - running into each other - can be traced: an expansive cascading introduction a kind of scherzo an chaconne-like adagio and a kind of finale again with the phenomenon of ´cascades´ as a main idea. However as the course is from time to time thrown into chaos by convulsive twitching and crises other experiences of form are opened out within a spectrum from wild to cautious from dramatic to contemplative in a universe of tempi which can suggest the title of a book of poems by the Danish Michael Strunge (1958-1986): ´Velocity of life.´ A listener described the symphony as “a walk with a fire-breathing dragon” and a reviewer described it with words like “a pacifist in times of war”. Anyway words and programme note are – as Carl Nielsen said about titles – only “road signs” for personal experiences in the area of music itself. Per NørgÃ¥rd

Ouvertüre. Autograph: Biblioteka Jagiellonska Kraków. Par MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY FELIX. An enchanted night, virtually fragrant dreams, floating fairies & the sensory associations evoked and fashioned by the music of Mendelssohn's overture ; A Midsummer Night's Dream are almost inexhaustible. Written by the composer in 1826 in a carefree summer spent between the summerhouse and his siblings, this is without doubt Mendelssohn's most popular concert overture. The renowned musicologist Friedhelm Krummacher shows in the introduction how finely Mendelssohn interwove motifs and themes. He also looks into the origins of the work, especially a conjectural firstsketch, which is reproduced in facsimile in the appendix. To mark the 200th anniversary of Mendelssohn's birth, Bärenreiter in cooperation with the Biblioteka Jagiellonska Krakó w published a high-quality facsimile designed for the bibliophile, vividly bringing the composer's delicate handwriting to life./ Répertoire / Orchestre

Solo for Oboe or Violin. Par BACRI NICOLAS. The title only appears frivolous to those who have lived little. With the passage of time, the seasons that pass, the differences in quantity and quality of light, of temperature and weather, become of ever greater importance in the meaning of our individual existence. This transformation follows the path of our lives and often mimes in front of our very own eyes, incredulous and wondrous, events that we can only experience once in a lifetime: our birth, our blossoming, our aging and our death. Such a subject could well take up ten years of my life. This was the case. Nevertheless, everything started very innocently with a proposition from my friend François Leleux to write him a double concerto that he could play with Natalia Gutman, initially named ‘Musica Concertante’. It was with this second proposition from François for another double concerto, this time with Lisa Batiashvili, that the idea came to me for a cycle of four concertos with, each time, a different instrument from the string quartet to join the oboe. The automnal colours of the cello are a perfect match for the retrospective nature of the first completed concerto in the cycle. ‘concerto nostalgico, l’automne’, whilst the love and the first child of the Leleux-Batiashvili couple could only bring Spring to mind, hence the ‘Concerto amoroso, le printemps’, was born. When Jean-Marc Bador asked me to be an associate of the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris for two years, it was quite naturally that I thought of completing this cycle for François Leleux, with winter ‘Concerto tenebroso’, created in January 2010 with Lise berthaud playing the viola. All that remained was for me to conclude, with a work that reunited all four protagonsits. It was summer, the ‘Concerto luminoso’, which took on this role’./ Répertoire / Orchestre

Version 2-From the preface: Symphony No. 5 constitutes a special 'family of works' within Rued Langgaard's output. The starting-point was the orchestral piece Summer Legend Drama which was written in1917-18 and premiered at the Nordic Music Festival in Copenhagen on 16 June 1919 with Frederik Schnedler-Petersen as conductor. After a revision in 1941 this work was entitledA Thing of the Past (BVN 140). In 1920 Langgaard wrote his Symphonic Festival Play (BVN 166) which he based on Summer Legend Drama but which incorpo rates a new middle section and a new conclusion and at the same time is considerablyshorter. The composer conducted the Symphonic Festival Play himself at the Danish Concert Society on 20 April 1921. The following year the work was performed in Berlin by the Blüthner Orchestra and in Vienna by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra on both occasions under the direction of the German conductor Hans Seeber-van der Floe. Langgaard's next step was to abbreviate and revise the Summer Legend Drama in 1926; he presented it at a concert on 11 April 1927 in Copenhagen under the designation Symphony no. 5 (one movement). This is the version that the composer later named 'version 1' and which the Rued Langgaard Edition published in 2002.

for Violin, Viola and Orchestra. Par MOZART WOLFGANG AMADEUS. There is no reference to the origin, occasion or a performance of the Sinfonia concertante in E-flat for Violin, Viola and Orchestra, K. 364 (320d) because in all probability it was composed in Salzburg (presumably in summer or early autumn, 1779): Mozart seems to have had no reason to write about it. It was apparently in Paris that he first had the occasion of giving the genre of the ; Symphonie concertante his special attention. On April 5, 1778, he wrote to his father: ; Now I shall write a sinfonie concertante for flute wendling, oboe Ramm, Punto horn, and Ritter bassoon. Even more discouraging must have been the fact that he had similardifficulties in Paris in having the works performed as he had in Mannheim. After the organizier of the Concerts spirituels, Le Gros, contrary to his promise, did not include the mentioned ; sinfonie concertante in his program. Mozart had no reason to compose any more for this genre in Paris. After Mozart's return to Salzburg, he might have been eager to introduce the new genre there, especially since adequate instrumentalists were available. Also the choice of the solo instruments (violin and viola) in the work presented here was probably influenced by the popularity of this instrumental combination in Salzburg at that time. - Urtext of the New Mozart Edition - Full score & parts (BA4900), study score format 22. 5 x 16. 5cm (TP176), violin, viola and piano reduction (BA4900-90) available for sale/ Répertoire / Orchestre

Music Of Our Time. Par HENZE HANS WERNER. ‘My Sinfonia No. 8 is not at all tragic or moody like the Seventh. It is a summer piece and is based on three moments from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream‘, writes Hans Werner Henze. This, however, is all we get to know from the composer regarding the work’s reference to Shakespeare’s comedy. On closer examination of the three-movement symphony it turns out that the first movement is a fantasia on Oberon’s order to Puck to search for the magic flower. In the second movement, Henze apparently set the love scenes between Titania and Bottom to music. Ultimately, the final movement shines gracefully and peacefully as if everything that had happened before had only been a dream.

Stratifications was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 1973-75 and was premiered in the summer 1977 by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra at the Young Nordic Music Festival in Reykjavik. Programme note: The stratifications referred to in the title unfold two different levels. There is the stratification of the time dimension produced by the opposition of contrasting parts; at the same time the polyphony the presence of several simultaneously sounding layers is of great importance to the music. By garish colours and clear-cut outlines a polyrhythmic simultaneousness of simple melodies is produced with more gestic music and othermaterial which give a peculiar ?set piece-like? effect in the sound picture. The ?new simplicity? details are here woven together in a new kind of complex whole. ?Stratifications? begins with a series of concretistic masklike ?pictures of the music?. It is like seeing lantern slides. But this ?fictive? form crackles and the music gets attentive and real. The music is in a night-mare condition where it is not getting anywhere in spite of a great dynamic display. But finally is liberating itself and rising ?in triumph?.

One of the touchstones of the classical repertoire Mozart’s Symphony No 40 in G minor was written over a very few weeks in Vienna in 1788 at the end of the composer’s tragically short life. Having turned away from composition in the symphonic form for some years Mozart returned to it with a creative fury that summer composing the three great and eternal symphonies Nos 39 40and 41 in a white heat of creative outpouring. Symphony No 40 is the only one of the three in a minor key allowing its classical elegance and beauty to be interwoven with drama and emotion.

Par GLERUP RUNE. My violin concerto would never have been written if I had not met Isabelle Faust. At a time when I had not written a single note for several months, doubting if I would ever write anything again, her interest and energy was the cause of new inspiration. Just as important was her special way of playing - with intellect, heart and a rare, delicate sensibility. Her personality and musicianship struck a chord in me, in my music, which gave my thoughts a new direction.
The violin concerto marks a change in my music towards a simpler and lighter expression. An expression that also contains detached glimpses from my childhood's endless summers by the North Sea. Birds, high and slow on a blue sky, and the evening quietly descending. The special light, the distant sounds. But also the confusion, repetitions and dead ends of the world. An expression that, more than in my previous music, is 'About Light and Lightness.'
