London No. 12-Joseph Haydn's 'Eulenburg Pocket Score' is the result of his second trip to England in 1794. This work is one of the still popular from the series of the so-called '12 London Symphonies' (Hob. 1/93 - Hob. 104).The work characterized by musical finesse and various sonic stimuli has the following four movements: I. Adagio - Allegro - II. Allegretto (C major) - III. Menuet: Moderato - IV. Presto. The somewhat unusual epithet 'military symphony' refers essentially to the second and the fourth movement ('Allegretto' and 'Presto') in which the instrumentation is enriched by timpani triangle cymbals and bass drum and thereby the evokes the impression of amilitary band. A 'trumpet signal' especially set in the second movement led to such a characterization. On the value and importance of this G major Symphony the following article from the Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung of April 1799 reveals: 'It is a little less learned and easier to grasp than some of the other's newest works but new ones Ideas just as rich as they. Perhaps the surprise in music can not be furthered than it is here by the sudden collapse of full Janissary music in the minor of the second movement-since until then one has no suspicion that these Turkish instruments are attached to the symphony. But here too not only the inventive but also the prudent artist shows. Nevertheless the Andante is nevertheless a whole: for in all the pleasing and easy things that the composer in order to infer from the idea of his coup deceitfully brought it into the first part of it it is nevertheless arranged and worked in a march.' The 'Military Symphony' was premiered on March 31 1799 in London.

Full Score-The Persian traditional music (called the Dastgah Segah) is based on intervals made of three quarter-tones and natural whole-tones. Segah has no interval in common with the European/ Western equal-temperament tuning. This lack of common intervalsbetween the Segah mode and the equal-temperament tuning will lead to a cognitive dissonance if this mode is set against the equal-temperament system. My goal has been to elaborate on the innate tensions that exists between the two interval systemsand use it as a symbol for the existing political and cultural tensions between the Persian and the Western cultures. The piece consists of two Persian traditional instruments the Ney (Persian vertical bamboo flute) and the Kamanche (Persian spikefiddle) as the musical representatives of the Persian culture set against the Western orchestra as the musical representative of the Western culture. A small ensemble of Western instruments consisting of a harp and string quintet accompanies thePersian instruments. The harp is tuned to the Segah intervals and the string quintet plays in the Segah mode. The orchestra is performing inthe Western equal- temperament tuning. From the very first bars of the main section of the piece confusionsand misunderstandings arise. The orchestra being unable to play in Segah or understand the mode becomes more and more agitated. Musical tensions between the soloists and the orchestra lead to musical confrontations and finally to musicalviolence. The orchestra becomes extremely violent and militaristic and tries to suppress the soloists efforts to express their musical thoughts. In the midst of all these confusions and cultural misunderstandings musical connections and attractionsstart to take place. The orchestra and the soloists find themselves musically attracted to each other and start imitating each others musical phrases. Cognitive dissonances start to be gradually transformed to musical dialogues symbolizing thegradual replacement of the clash of civilizations with the dialogue of civilizations. Segah was written for Khosrow and Kian Soltani and premiered at the Segah Festival on January 15 2016.

Although Bertold Hummel composed this Scherzo for bassoon and chamber orchestra more than fifty years ago the piece still captivates every listener with its youthful carefree liveliness. Virtuoso and witty it does justice to its title in every respect. It was created in 1957 upon commission of the Kleines Unterhaltungsorchester Südwestfunk Baden-Baden. The solo part of the four-minute concert piece with the tempo indication 'allegro molto' was tailor-made by Hummel for the orchestra's principal bassoonist Helmut Böker. In addition to the hire material a piano score with solo part is now available on sale.

The Frog (Frøen) for Narrator and Orchestra (2009). Text by Carl Quist Møller. Commissioned by Aarlborg Symphony Orchestra. A crazy liar story about the first love frogs turning into royal Africans and a lobster which is really a submarine. The Frog is written for children’s concerts for children between five and ten years old. The narrator reads the story while the orchestra plays in the background. Occasionally the orchestra plays longer section without narrator; these sections are commenting on the story. The sections without narrator can be performed as a10 minutes long orchestral work. The music is a wild visually evocative all fun-mixture of modern pop- and dance-music African folk music and Western European avant-garde music.

But I love the way those countries sound in Hollywood movies and inpop culture generally: When Clint Eastwood rides south of the border when Disney’s Alladin or Mulan takes me far east when arabic pop music roars past me out of the open windows of a car... and bull fighter music and the sound of acrobatic beat-em-up’s in John Woo’s Hong Kong karate movies – and so on: powerful images splashed all over my eye balls and ear drums. My recollections of this ethnic-pop-film-music has turned itself into a symphony. And I don’t even have to just remember what I have heard: A few internet clicks gives me access to incredible sound libraries containing live-and-kicking ethnic music from my three favorite countries just waiting to be put together in new combinations and energize my personal imagery. The symphony is like a huge slide show – musical snapshots from my travels in the western pop culture versions of three exotic locations: Mexico Arabia and China – original and popular melodies welded together by my personal musical language and associations. I use all the effects of modern pling-plong-music plus a few of my own inventions to create a spectacular contemporary orchestral sound sporting a bee hive of melodies from either East or West played simultaneously in different keys and differents tempos at once while kept firmly in place by

The composer described it as a memorial of my years between middle school and college in which I witnessed my own drastic characther development severe social problems lacerated friendships frantic family relationships and the overall confusion toward my own ethics. Most importantly it is a realistic portrayal of the many Chinese students studying in the West spiritually torn between the two cultures. Poul Ruder's Wind-Drumming for Wind Quintet and 4 Percussionists (1979/85). Parts are for hire: hire@ewh.dk Programme NoteWind-Drumming was written in 1979 on a commission from The Danish Percussion Ensemble. The piece is a clash of two kinds of sound-associations; the mystic exotic impact of Latin-American drumming and the more well dressed reputation of Western concert-instruments in this case a wind-quintet (w. electric flute). The two instrumental camps either melt into one soft humming ritual or are split wide apart the winds tearing their way through the undergrowth ofrainforest-drumming. There is more than one way of getting on to WIND-DRUMMING: obviously it is about the confrontation of two incongruent ways of living a lament on the damage done to the tropical rainforests of the world by modern civilisation. One can hear it plainly as a direct rhythm-show a downright number or a joyous homage to the most exiting kind of folkloristic music at all: the carnal spell of the Brazilian Samba. Poul Ruders

Wish You Were Here written for the Boston Pops pays homage to Colin McPhee one of the first western musicologists to study Balinese gamelan as well as to the great illustrators Carl Barks and Herge (responsible for Donald Duck & Tintin respectively). Muhly has written a completely romantic and fanciful gamelan-influenced piece. On top of this twittery and excited music a long lonesome melody unfolds. After a desolate interlude with severe ship’s-horn brass the energetic patterns start again and the long line returns this time with a triumphant revelatory ending. Arranged for orchestra this piece has a duration ofapproximately 8 minutes.

Carl Vineâ??s Concerto for Orchestra was premiered to critical acclaim by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra in October 2014. Its composer describes the way the 20-minute work (like his recent Piano Trio The Village) â??evolves organically through a chain of episodes to create a web of melodies and harmonies that are related but not identical. This network of ideas is tied together by strong lateral bonds but remains fluid and flexible creating a series of fleeting glimpses what Prokofiev called visions fugitives abstract patterns glimpsed in the half-light or imagined behind clouds.â??

The music for this piece was inspired by a short extract from a traditional melody sung by women cloth-workers in Barra in the Western Isles of Scotland. The Scottish folk music tradition is one that Weir has frequently drawn onin the past both in shorter works such as the songs of Scotch Minstrelsy and in her second opera The Vanishing Bridegroom and it is one she has completely assimilated into her technique. The modal feel of this piece however is as much a result of Weir's intuitive and idiomatic harmonic sense as of the original inspiration. Overture for Orchestra commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in honour of the 50th anniversary of the Tanglewood MusicCentre in 1991; it received its first performance there on 3 August that year.

Création 30/11/2012 - Cologne (Allemagne), Philharmonie - Nicolas Hodges (piano), WDR sinfonieorchester Köln, Ilan Volkov (direction) Commanditaire Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln Dédicace à Nicolas Hodges Notice Le titre de ce concerto est emprunté à l'ouvrage classique de l'archéologue et philologue américaine Emily Dickinson Townsend Vermeule, Aspects of Death in Early Greek Art and Poetry (1979). Le chapitre V s'intitule : On the Wings of the Morning : the Pornography of Death. Hugues Dufourt

for Orchestra Full Score. Par PENG-PENG GONG. “In celebration of the 40th anniversary of China-U.S. diplomatic relations and in hope to support the promotion of Chinese culture abroad, Peng-Peng Gong's (b. 1992) Tenth Symphony, subtitled 'Peking Fantasy' (Op. 55) was co-commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra in 2017. The world premiere of the 2018 original version was presented by the SPO in April of the same year in Shanghai, while the world premiere of the 2019 revised version was presented by the Philadelphia Orchestra in January at its home venue with the combined forces of both orchestras side-by-side.
Inspired by the artistic power of Peking Opera ?the crowning heritage of Chinese traditional performing arts, the symphony strives to translate the emotional and philosophical experience of the art form for international audiences and to explore the Western orchestra's expressive abilities in capturing the Eastern spirit. The 2018 original version ran as long as 76 minutes, before the composer extensively revised the score down to 40 and presented it in a single movement without pause. The work is scored for a huge orchestra of over 100 players. Main materials that inspired the music are from the traditional Peking Opera repertory: The Drunken Beauty, Farewell My Concubine, In Pursuit of the General, and The Chancellor and the Advisor (lit. Cao Cao and Yang Xiu).
'Peking Fantasy' is in a sweet, direct musical language ...It's a work of highly original sounds presented in a series of vivid episodes.”

It is the best-known of Haydn’s works and epitomises the classical style and structure of the symphonic form.
