Scherzo For
Organ was first
published in 1917. It is
dedicated to John
Connell, a South African
organist and Organ
builder, with whom the
composer became great
friends when he travelled
to Cape Town and
Johannesburg.
Alfred
Hollins (1865-1942)
was an inspirational
British organist,
composer and teacher.
Blind from birth, he
travelled all over the UK
and the British Empire,
giving concerts and
designing Organs. He
eventually settled in
Scotland, where he was an
organist in Edinburgh for
over forty years

Hugo
Wolf ist vor allem durch
seine über 300
Liedschöpfungen
bekannt, in denen er -
von Schumann ausgehend -
der begleitenden
Klavierstimme eine
geradezu sinfonisch
ausgearbeitete poetische
Interpretation des
Textgedankens
übertrug. Das Scherzo
[Zwischenspiel aus der
Oper Der Corregidor HWW
158] fungiert als
Zwischenspiel im zweiten
Akt der Komischen Oper
Der Corregidor, der
einzigen Oper Hugo Wolfs,
die 1896 in Mannheim ihre
Uraufführung erfuhr.
Seine unbefangene Frische
macht es zu einem
Bravourstück, dem eine
wachsende Verbreitung und
Bekanntheit nur zu
wünschen ist. Als
Liedkomponist zeigt sich
Hugo Wolf in seiner
schlicht-bezaubernden
Berceuse [1880, HWW 65].
Dieses kleine,
ursprünglich für
Klavier geschriebene Werk
hat nicht nur zahlreiche
Bearbeitungen erfahren,
sondern ist auch unter
zahlreichen Titeln
veröffentlicht worden.
Die Orgeltranskription
rechnet für das
Zwischenspiel mit einer
dreimanualigen Orgel mit
ausgebautem Schwellwerk.
(Otto Depenheuer).

Wo

Heimat, die Ruh basiert
auf einer Melodie nach
einer irischen Weise und
auf einen Text von Ludwig
Jörgens (1792-1842).
Das Lied sehr selten in
neueren Liederheften oder
Gesangbüchern zu
finden, wird in
ländlichen Gemeinden
aber zu Beerdigungen noch
gern gesungen. Zu
Beerdigungsfeiern
können einzelne
Sätze gespielt werden,
oder man lässt in
Geistlichen Musiken zu
Totensonntag die Partita
als Ganzes erklingen.

Triptych in
honorem Gustav Willscher
(2017) is dedicated to
Andreas Willscher in
celebration of the
writing of his Troppauer
Musiklexicon. Gustav
Willscher (born 1882 in
Meltsch bei
Troppau/Sudentenschleisen
and died 1937 in Vienna)
was in his time a very
successful poet, writer,
and composer. In addition
to his musical talents
(he played several
instruments, among others
the piano and guitar), he
also created a collection
of drawings. He was the
grandfather of composer
and organist Andreas
Willscher. The outer
movements, Silesian
Prelude and Troppauer
Postlude, refer to his
cultural heritage, and
each quote a musical
theme by Gustav
Willscher. The second
movement, Minuet, refers
obliquely to Vienna, the
city in which Willscher
died. Instrumentation:

Three
Sound-Poems after
Paintings by Andreas
Willscher (2017) are
dedicated to organist
Philip Hartmann and the
art-loving community of
the Pauluskirche in Ulm,
Germany. The music is
inspired by three
paintings by German
composer (and artist)
Andreas Willscher (b.
1955). The pieces take
their musical shapes and
colors from the specific
details of the paintings.
The three paintings
represent different
styles: a landscape, a
religious theme, and an
abstract. The first
movement, Sonnenfeld (Sun
Field), is inspired by a
bright painting of the
sun illuminating the
green field behind the
composer's small house in
Sainte-Radegonde
(Dordogne/Perigord,
France). A resplendent
and majestic section of
full sun harmonies
surrounds a middle
section with more motion.
The second movement,
Gebet des Hl. Franziskus
(Prayer of St. Francis),
is inspired by a painting
showing St. Francis of
Assisi in prayer. Francis
has been a frequent theme
in Willscher's music
since his appointment at
a young age as organist
of St. Francis Church in
Hamburg. The third
movement, Laetare
(Rejoice), is inspired by
an vibrant abstract
painting comprised of
bold colors. The
alternation of the blocks
of rich color are
mirrored in the block
harmonic shifts in the
movement, which is a moto
perpetuo, building
towards the organ's
fullest sounds.
