As
well as 20 organ sonatas
and seven collections of
stand-alone organ pieces
with opus numbers,
Rheinberger composed a
whole range of smaller
works for organ methods
or organ collections for
his favorite instrument,
mainly at the request of
colleagues and friends.
They are ideally suited
for mass and organ
lessons.
This
organ volume brings
together twelve
compositions Rheinberger
wrote for different
occasions and at various
points during his career.
Included in the
collection are seven
short pieces in different
keys that date from the
early 1860s. Rheinberger
wrote these at the
request of his teacher
Herzog and others for
several organ collections
of “easy,
performable†pieces
– and they are
rewarding pieces for
liturgical use. The works
without opus numbers (WoO
10, 37, 56, 70) can no
longer be regarded as
early works. The Fugue in
F minor WoO 10 of 1867,
with its tendency to
translate counterpoint
into expressive chordal
writing, already displays
many characteristics of
the late Rheinberger, the
Canzonetta WoO 77 is a
late work from autumn
1899, whereas the Romanze
WoO 70 is a second
version of no. 1 of the
Miscellaneen op. 174 in
the easier to play key of
C major.

Joha
nn Christian Heinrich
Rinck gehörte zu den
Verfechtern der Notation
von pedaliter-Orgelmusik
auf drei Systemen, also
mit separiert notierter
Pedal-Stimme. Eine
derartige Notation war
sowohl bei Komponisten
und Kopisten wie auch bei
den Verlegern unbeliebt,
hatte sie doch einen um
bis zu 50% höheren
Verbrauch an Papier zur
Folge. Auch das
vorliegende Werk wurde im
Erstdruck in einer
Notation auf zwei
Systemen publiziert. Die
vorliegende Ausgabe
extrahiert den Erstdruck
des Werkes in der
Notation von zwei auf
drei Systeme. Dem Wunsche
Rincks durch eine
Separierung des
Pedal-Stimme in ein
eigenes System
nachträglich
nachzukommen, war bei
diesem Opus aufgrund
einer schon zu Lebzeiten
Rincks erschienenen
Neuausgabe möglich.
Zahlreiche Hinweise in
dieser Neuausgabe
notieren, wann das Pedal,
wann Pedal und Manual
zusammen und wann auch
nur manualiter zu
musizieren ist. Vom
Doppelpedalspiel (wohl
den recht schwach
besetzten Pedalwerken der
Orgeln seiner Zeit
Rechnung tragend) macht
Rinck in diesem Opus
zudem nur selten
Gebrauch. (Christoph
Dohr).

short trios, preludes and
fugues in different keys,
the collection is
particularly suitable for
use in worship, but also
for teaching.

The
fourth volume of the
section of the Reger
Edition devoted to his
organ works comprises, in
chronological order, the
chorale preludes composed
between October 1893 and
November 1914 in
Wiesbaden, Weiden,
Munich, Leipzig, and
Meiningen. The
composition of chorale
preludes accompanied
Reger throughout his
entire career, even
though they were composed
primarily in the years
from 1900 to 1902 and
1914 (Opus 135a). As
almost no other composer
at the turn of the
century, he dedicated
himself to the chorale
prelude, composing around
100 works in this genre.
Since January 2008, the
first scholarly, critical
edition of the works of
Max Reger (RWA) is being
produced at the
Max-Reger-Institute,
Karlsruhe. Its design as
a hybrid edition breaks
new ground in the methods
of editorial practice. It
comprises three areas of
Reger's compositional
output: Organ works,
Lieder and choruses and,
for the first time, Max
Reger's arrangements of
works by other composers.
To begin the series, the
first seven volumes have
been published and
contain the organ works,
which have been eagerly
awaited by many.
