Composed in 1949 Jean Langlais' (1907-1991) Three Prayers op. 65 for Medium Voice and Organ – republished here in their complete version – can also be performed by a Choir in unison and accompanied by the Harmonium or Piano. While Marcel Dupré's training allowed Langlais to acquire brilliant virtuosity as an organist it was never an end in itself: for the composer the key word was simplicity. Testaments to a strong faith the Three Prayers reveal a sense of concision and a search for purity not incompatible with the sonic refinement of an intense expressiveness. TheAve verum which highlights the real presence of Christ during the Eucharist radiates a serene clarity. The Ave maris Stella alternates exaltation and appeasement  ('Break the chains of guilt bring light to the blind'). The first two pieces use the French translation of the Latin liturgical text while the third – Tantum ergo – offers the two versions in alternation. The entire cycle expresses the fulfilment that is found in simplicity.

Vol.1 Premières Mélodies. Par FAURE GABRIEL. Gabriel FAURE est né à Pamiers (Ariège), le 12 mai 1845. Ses dons précoces pour la musique lui permirent d'entrer dès l'âge de neuf ans à la célèbre Ecole Niedermeyer fondée à Paris pour former les organistes et les maîtres de chapelle : durant une dizaine d'années, il y reçut un enseignement de grande qualité, axé principalement sur l'étude de la musique sacrée et des grands chefs-d'oeuvre classiques, auxquels l'initia notamment Camille Saint-Saëns, son professeur de piano. Dès sa sortie de l'Ecole, Fauré entama une brillante carrière d'organiste. En 1896, il succéda à Théodore Dubois à l'orgue de la Madeleine et fut nommé professeur de composition au Conservatoire : il y eut pour élèves Ravel, Koechlin, Enesco, Schmitt. Entre-temps, il avait rencontré Liszt à Weimar et s'était initié à l'art de Wagner dont il ne subit pas véritablement l'influence. Appelé en 1905 à la direction du Conservatoire de Paris, après la démission de Théodore Dubois, membre de l'Institut, critique musical, Fauré vécut ses dernières années dans l'isolement, frappé par une irréversible surdité qui le contraignit à démissionner du Conservatoire en 1920. Il est mort à Paris, le 4 novembre 1924. La musique de ce compositeur quelquefois incompris et qui toucha à presque tous les genres (hormis l'orgue), se révèle d'une grande subtilité. Ennemi de l'emphase, Fauré a mis un contrepoint élégant, une écriture harmonique très personnelle, des inflexions imprévues et le secret de sa sensibilité musicale peu commune au service d'une oeuvre variée et d'une extrême qualité./ Répertoire / Chant et Piano

The Last Judgment  is a through-composed symphonic tableau that follows the structure of the text of Matthew 25 : 31-46 underlining it in a figuralistic manner. Other scriptural references are also to be found: an image of the sun that turns dark (Acts of the Apostles 2: 20) and before the gathering of the nations twelve chords representing the thrones for the judgment of the twelve tribes of Israel (Matthew 19: 28). The thematic material combines original figures with Gregorian chant: the Gloria from the Missa de Angelis; the Alleluia of the Epiphany; Dies irae the sequence fromthe Requiem Mass; In paradisum the burial antiphon. The sections in recitative style follow the declamatory rhythm of the corresponding verses in Arabic the composer’s mother tongue. Finally the registration requires a symphonic style organ such as the Goll organ in Memmingen Germany at which the composer prepared the orchestral expression of this work.
