Vocal Score / Softcover. Par VERDI GIUSEPPE. In a letter of 2 January 1851, Verdi suggested for the first time Antonio Garcia Gutierrez play El Trovador as a possible subject for his new Opera: 'It seems to me very beautiful, imaginative, and full of strong situations'. Once he had settled on the subject, the composer immediately began looking for a theater in which to produce the Opera and after protracted negotiations he decided to stage Il Trovatore in Rome. The premiere occurred on 19 January 1853 at the Teatro Apollo and was an enormous success. The appreciation of the new work increased from performance to performance. The third performance was the last the composer was contractuallyobliged to attend: at the end of the evening the audience presented Verdi with two laurel wreaths. Verdi 's account of the performances, contained in a letter to his friend Clarina Maffei, was eloquent: 'They say that this Opera is too sad and that there are too many deaths. But ultimetley in life everything is death! What exists?. . . ' Notwithstanding Verdi 's pessimism, Il Trovatore circulated rapidly. Here, appearing for the first time, is the piano vocal score of Le Willis, Giacomo Puccini’s first stage work, whose full score remained unpublished until 2020, when it was issued by Casa Ricordi (NR 139546).The critical edition by Martin Deasy is based, as far as the first six Numbers are concerned, on the autograph score that Puccini reutilized for composing Le Villi. The autograph pages incorporating the final Number – pages that were later removed, in order to make space for the new material produced for Le Villi– are also proposed as the principal text.Pursuing an innovative philological approach, the editor has, furthermore, taken into due consideration the contemporaneous printed editions of the piano vocal score, on the assumption that they constitute the principal collateral sources, if one considers the particular genesis of this work. For it is certain that Puccini, upon entering the Sonzogno competition, submitted a score of Willis that lacked proper orchestration in a few pages and displayed, above all, incomplete vocal lines. However, he also provided a manuscript reduction for piano and vocal score (now lost, except for the final Number of Willis) that was undoubtedly more detailed, as far as the vocal lines were concerned. The editor proves that the vocal material produced for the first performance of Willis was not copied from the autograph score, but from the lost score reduction. This work, possibly commissioned by Prince-Bishop Sigismund Christoph von Schrattenbach , was assigned to three Salzburg composers: W. A. Mozart (part 1), Michael Haydn (part 2), and Anton Cajetan Adlgasser (part 3). Only the manuscript of part 1 has survived. Here Mozart drew heavily on the Salzburg tradition of church music and school dramas, perhaps taking Johann Ernst Eberlin and even his father Leopold as his models.
The first performance took place in the Knights' Hall of the prince's palace on 12 March 1767. The libretto was supplied by Ignaz Anton Weiser (1701-1785), town councillor and mayor of Salzburg .
Mozart wrote out many of the appoggiaturas in this early work, thereby providing a useful guide to the vocal practices of his day. Aria #2 has come down to us with an instructive passage in which the vocal part is ornamented in the hand of Leopold Mozart.

I Puritani is the last work of Vincenzo Bellini: composed in nine months, from April 1834 to January 1835 (a gestation unusually long for that time), was performed for the first time in Paris, Théâtre Italien, 24 January 1835. During this period, the dramatic structure suffered radical transformations: initially structured in two acts, the work was divided into three acts just before the premiere, but on the eve of the first performance, and immediately after that, the excessive length of the title imposed the cut of three pieces and other minor sections. Simultaneously with the release for Paris, Bellini prepared a version designed for a planned exhibition for Naples at Teatro S. Carlo, whose protagonist had to be Maria Malibran and in which the part of Riccardo had to be supported by a tenor. The exhibition did not take place, as the score came late in Naples: the Neapolitan version was rediscovered and performed only in the eighties of the twentieth century. The new Critical Edition is based on the autograph, on the libretto of the first performance and on four manuscript copies produced in the context of the Théâtre Italien in the first months of life of the work, three of which contain autograph interventions (these sources are now kept at the Biblioteca Comunale in Palermo, at the Museo Civico Belliniano in Catania, at the Archivio Storico Ricordi in Milano and at the Staatsbibliothek zur Preussischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin). Naoumoff was born in Sofia in 1962. At the age of eight, he began his career as a pianist and composer; he was a student of Nadia Boulanger for ten years until her death. At the age of ten, Naoumoff composed and performed his own piano concerto under the direction of Yehudi Menuhin. He then received numerous awards and prizes and gave performances as highly acclaimed pianist. Today, Naoumoff lives and works as an associate professor at the School of Music of the Indiana University at Bloomington. Handel's three-part serenata Parnasso in festa was premiered in March 1734 for the wedding of Princess Anne and Prince William IV of Orange. The music is largely based on the English oratorio Athalia. The Italian libretto, by Giacomo Rossi, takes up the Greek myth of the wedding of Thetis and Peleus. As so often in Handel's case, the work was subjected to three large-scale revisions by 1741.
This vocal score is based on the Urtext from the Halle Handel Edition (BA 10718), the first to offer a scholarly-critical musical text for the complete serenata. The most significant changes in the later versions are reproduced in an appendix.
