Par VAN NUETEN GUY. Contact by Guy Van Nueten originated from the feeling of being abandoned, such as a person who treks through a barren desert following a great disaster and asks himself if there's any point in carrying on when every day brings just more of the same - still more desert. I suspect that each of us has such a desert within himself, but that it depends on circumstances whether or not we choose to make the journey through it. Contact lays out a path that we can share. This music seems especially romantic to me, in the sense that the sounds have much to say about loneliness. There are moments where this album emphasises its own seriousness, then immediately afterwards invites us todance. Contact sticks out a hand, sometimes two, mostly to show the internal process of the composer - firstly the lack of fire and the abandoned longing for this, followed by the bewilderment that there is something that is still smouldering and that can be fanned into a blazing forest fire to burn away all the pain of desolation. For this reason it is also moving music - because it wants the recognition of the listener, wants us to feel our own desolation while the piano explores further depths and heights. At times a composition is almost carelessly abandoned and another one begun. Whoever looks closely at feelings and is honest with himself and the world is always a little cruel. But finally there is an end to that desert - he sees an oasis and also a beautiful hotel. Upon entering, he sees no-one, not even at the desk, but the reigning play of light and colour is of an otherworldly power. Maybe no other people are needed here and the beauty that prevails is enough. Then sounds of music arise and some people move across to the immense hall where a wing has been set up, behind which a man is sitting, his fingers moving across the keyboard. And only one thing is real: after desolation comes comfort. That person is you and that person is me. And that music is called Contact, directly from the soul of Van Nueten. Béla Bartók's series of piano pieces For Children, based on folk melodies, was written around the end of the first decade of the 20th century. The pieces were published shortly afterwards by the Hungarian publisher Károly Rozsnyai. That first publication was in four volumes, the first two containing a total of 42 pieces based on Hungarian folk tunes, the third and fourth containing 43 pieces based on Slovakian folk tunes. In 1943, whilst in the United States, Bartók prepared a revised version of the collection for the publishers Boosey and Hawkes. The revisions were minimal: two Hungarian and four Slovakian songs were eliminated, there were a few minor alterations incorporating new ideas, some of the pieces previously written with accidentals had key signatures added, a few pieces were rewritten with changed meters - some fingerings were added or changed. The composer prepared the revised 1943 edition by using copies of the first edition on which he marked minor changes - where the changes were more extensive, fresh manuscript was written and a new version engraved. However, much of the engraving of the first edition was preserved in the 1943 edition. Publication took place in 1946, after the composer's death - it is not known if he saw final proofs prior to printing. The revised edition was published in two volumes, which now have been published together as one volume for the first time. / Piano

» (Martin Stadtfeld) Part I, 10 piano songs after Händel, Bach, Beethoven and Schumann: I Hymn (after Händel’s “Zadok the Priest”) II Never alone (after Bach’s “Bist Du bei mir”) III Shepherd’s song (after Bach’s “Schafe können sicher weiden”) IV Nature song (after Beethoven’s “Pastorale”) V Organ piece I (after Bach’s “Toccata in C”) VI Study (after Schumann’s “Die Rose, die Lilie, die Taube, die Sonne“) VI Organ piece II (after Bach’s “Sonata No. 5”) VIII Choral (after Schumann’s “Aus meinen Tränen sprießen”) IX Siciliano (after Bach’s “Erbarme Dich”) X Hymn II (after Händel’s “Zadok the Priest”) Part II, 10 piano songs after Bach, Dvorak, Schubert, Vivaldi, Purcell, Beethoven and Mozart: I New song (after Bach’s “Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied”) II Folksong (after Dvořák’s “Dumka from piano quintet”) III Passacaille (after Bach’s “Crucifixus”) IV Night song (after Schubert’s “Nachtstück”) V Aria (after Vivaldi’s “Sovente il sole”) VI Bach meets Vivaldi (after Vivaldi’s “Sovente il sole”) VII Canon (after Bach’s “Ich folge Dir gleichfalls mit freudigen Schritten”) VIII Lamento (after Purcell’s “When I am laid in earth”) IX Folksong (after Beethoven’s “Eroica”) X Variation (after Mozart’s “Marsch der Priester”) Part III, Ten Piano Songs: I Lullaby II Choral III Old song IV Passacaille V Minuet VI Eichendorff song VII Natural loud VIII Choral IX March X Lullaby Encore 1: Eroica Dance (after Beethoven’s “Eroica”) Encore 2: Jesu my joy (after Bach’s “Jesu bleibet meine Freude“) / Partitions classique / Piano - instruments à clavier / Piano / SCHOTT

Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. After attending the premiere of Beethoven?s stately concerto for violin and orchestra Muzio Clementi approached the composer and requested the work in a transcription for piano and orchestra; his wish was fulfilled in 1807 providing us with not just an alternative version of the composition but also one with authentic cadenzas which Beethoven had not written for the Violin Concerto! This version has waited a long time to be properly edited after the existing sources and the famed Beethoven scholar Jonathan Del Mar has done just that!
Working with all known sources, Del Mar finally presents us with Beethoven?s solo piano articulation and dynamics and Beethoven?s cadenzas. And, for the first time we now have clarity regarding the meaning of Beethoven?s Solo and Tutti markings.
All in all, a groundbreaking scholarly critical edition; a ?must? for every pianist, every orchestra and every music library.
The piano reduction will be presented in a new format:
As customary in the 19 th century there will be a solo piano part containing tutti passages, cues and the piano solo. This part will be inserted ? as with string and wind concertos ? in the piano reduction. This affords the soloist sensible page turns and offers the possibility to lead the ensemble from the piano. The piano reduction will include the reduction of the orchestral score as well as the solo piano part above it in small print. / Date parution : 2022-02-25/ Répertoire / Piano

With the new Urtext Primo series, the Wiener Urtext Edition wants to close the gap arising at the point of transition to additional lessons after having studied a piano method. Beginning with a performance level which is outlined by pieces such as Bach's Minuet in G (BWV Anh. 116), Mozart's Minuet in F (KV 5) or Schumann's Wilder Reiter (Op. 68/8), each volume contains works by three different composers, with the aim of offering piano pupils (or even adults who want to resume piano playing) a wide range of repertoire pieces on the basis of which they can enhance their technical and musical skills. In contrast to conventional piano anthologies, the pieces' range of levels of difficulty is relatively narrow so that the volume can be used continuously over a period of about two years. The selected repertoire takes into account not only pieces of the classic canon of lessons, but also lesser known works which are in no way of less importance for piano lessons. The explanations included at the end of each volume shall help to deepen the knowledge of musical styles, music history and piano playing. A repertoire chart at the end of each volume gives a rough overview of the levels of difficulty of the selected pieces. After Vol. 1 with works by Bach, Handel and Scarlatti and Vol. 2 with compositions by Haydn, Mozart and Cimarosa, Vol. 3 contains pieces by Beethoven, Schubert und Hummel, including popular pieces such as Beethoven's 'Für Elise' and lesser known, yet stimulating settings by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. / Piano

Par SIBELIUS JEAN. The Piano runs through Jean Sibelius's oeuvre like a red thread. After some first student pieces, he composed the Sonata op. 12 (EB 8142) in 1893, and his first cycle of Piano pieces, the Six Impromptus op. 5. Here the Finnish composer self-assuredly takes up a great romantic genre significantly shaped by Schubert and Chopin. Sibelius draws inspiration from some of his own early works in this composition, yet he also uses the last two pieces from opus 5 as the groundwork for an autonomous 'Impromptu' for string orchestra which he put together shortly after completing the Piano pieces. 'You must judge me on the basis of my orchestral works. The Piano does not interest me. Itcannot sing, ' said Sibelius. Yet how seriously can we take this famous quote when considering how masterfully he crossed the boundaries with his Impromptus' Pianists such as Ralf Gothoni, Glenn Gould and Olli Mustonen have not let themselves be deterred by the composer's harsh self-criticism, and, with their interpretations, have provided compelling proof of the opposite./ Répertoire / Piano

Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on ?Der Freischütz'. The unprecedented...(+)
Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on ?Der Freischütz'. The unprecedented success of this opera overshadowed all his other works and contributed to their increasing fall into oblivion. Certain works such as ?Preciosa', ?Oberon', and ?Euryanthe', the overtures, solo concertos and piano sonatas, the lieder and chamber works enjoyed great popularity and were widely known in Germany and abroad as late as the second half of the 19th century. However, any chance of a revival of Weber's influential and substantial oeuvre was wasted in the 1920s, when a complete edition - begun by Hans Joachim Moser and with potential contributors including Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein and Richard Strauss - failed after the third volume.Ever since there have been numerous attempts to restart a complete edition of Weber's works, but as this kind of project would have required the co-operation of scholars from both sides of the inter-German border, the political situation after 1945 was not conducive to any such enterprise. Careful negotiations led to the first tangible steps in the 1980s. The intention, right from the beginning, was to place Weber's work in context, and not to separate his musical output from his influential work as a writer, critic and organiser in the musical field, but to publish his compositions together with his letters, diaries and other literary output as the best way to document the cross-fertilisation between his musical, literary and practical activities.Since the German re-unification both working-parties concerned - at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, and at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, Detmold/Paderborn - have co-operated on the complete edition of the musical works (c. 45 volumes in 10 series: sacred music - cantatas, odes and other occasional works - stage works - lieder and vocal works - orchestral works - chamber music - music for piano - piano reductions - miscellanea, arrangements and orchestrations - works of doubtful attribution). The diaries (6-8 vols.) are edited in Berlin and the letters (8-10 vols.) and other writings (2 vols.) in Detmold. This complete edition aims to be a reliable basis of scholarly debate as well as for the authentic performance practice of Carl Maria von Weber's music. Conforming to the standards of recent historico-critical editions, the textual material will be based on all available authentic sources, accompanied by a detailed documentation of the genesis and a list of variants for each work. The musicological importance of the works will be evaluated by placing them in their historical context, the presentation of their genesis, history and Critical Commentaries. The letters, writings and diaries will be treated as inter-related and relevant to each other in the commentaries, therefore readers should benefit from a wealth of concise information and cross-references. / Piano

Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. Owing to severe illness, Beethoven had to wait for over a year after completing op. 109 before beginning work on the second piece in his triptych of late sonatas: the Piano Sonata in A-flat major op. 110. The initial sketches date from summer 1821: the work was completed by the end of the year and appeared in print the following summer – in an edition so riddled with mistakes that Beethoven angrily complained to the publisher. For this new edition Jonathan Del Mar consulted all known sources and came across previously unknown information in the course of his research. The edition appears with a meticulously edited and elegantly engraved musical text incorporating the latest findingsof scholarship, supplemented by a detailed Critical Commentary and notes on performance practice in Beethoven’s day.
