..., wenn man es nicht in
einem ganz guten Raum
hort, mit einer Akustik,
in der man wirklich diese
Nachhallsachen alle hort,
dann kann man ganz
schnell sagen, dass ist
so traditionelle Wiener
Schule-Musik ... Und wenn
man dahinter hort, dann
hort man eben schon, dass
all diese traditionellen
Klavier-Figurationen, die
so an der Oberflache da
sind, standig diese
Nachhall-Welt auslosen.
Und die ist dann eben
doch eine andere, die
dahinter ist. Aber es ist
eben beides und es halt
sich ... in Schach
irgendwie. Zumindest am
Anfang hort man ganz
aufmerksam zu ... sonst
hort man nur die virtuose
Oberflache. ... Ich
wollte nur auf den Tasten
spielen: Also ganz
normales, konventionelles
Klavierspiel, das ist das
eine. Und dann, was das
auslost bzw. wo das
aufgefangen wird ..., da
fangt die Klangspielerei
an, die vom
traditionellen
Klavierspiel wegfuhrt.
Bezug zur Tradition ist
riskant. Aber das macht
ja auch nichts. Mir wurde
es naturlich etwas
ausmachen, wenn das
umkippt zur falschen
Seite, wenn es doch eben
nicht die Ohren auf eine
neue Art von Wahrnehmung
richtet, was ich schon
mochte. Ich will nur
nicht die neue
Wahrnehmung in irgend
einer Wuste suchen, die
es, glaube ich, auch gar
nicht mehr gibt ... Ich
glaube nicht, dass das
ein vermittelnder Ansatz
ist: Es geht von
bestimmten Dingen aus und
versucht dann, woanders
hin zu kommen. Was soll
ich vermitteln: Tradition
und Avantgarde? Es ist
eine ganz komische Sache:
Ich habe Lust, ganz
abseits von diesen Sachen
etwas auszuprobieren,
Sachen zu machen, die ich
noch gar nicht gemacht
habe, dass diese Sachen
bis zu einem gewissen
Grad ausgereizt sind. Das
ist jetzt alles
Spekulation: Da muss ich
selbst abwarten, was mit

mit Nono zusammen in
einer
Kompositionswettbewerbs-J
ury. Wahrend dieser Tage
schlug er manchmal mit
der Faust schwere,
massige Rhythmen
elementarster Proportion
auf den Tisch. Vierfaches
Forte. Diese
Befreiungsschlage
hafteten die ganze Zeit
wahrend der Arbeit an
Statement in meinem
Gedachtnis. Sie waren
ganz aus dem Nahbereich
des Machens und
Wahrnehmens geboren.
Solcher Nahbereich
menschlicher Sinnenwelt
ist auch musikalisches
Ausfuhrungs- und
Hormodell des ubrigen
Stuckes. Die jeweiligen
Tone werden aus der
88-tastigen Klaviatur
aufgrund von
Bewegungsentwurfen
abgerufen, deren
Streckenmasse und
Geschwindigkeiten,
multipliziert mit den
jeweils zu bewegenden
Organ(gewicht)en, Ton und
Harmonik
charakterisieren. Der
horizontale, zeitliche
Verlauf des Stuckes
verwirrt zeitweise die
Nahbereichswahrnehmung
durch Wiederholung. In
der Partitur zeigen
numerierte Klammern das
jeweilige
Notentextfragment an, das
an einer anderen Stelle
in den musikalischen
Verlauf eingeschoben
werden soll, und zwar so,
als wurde es zum ersten
Mal erklingen. Es geht
also nicht um
psychisch-dynamische
Weiterspinnung, sondern
um eine live simulierte
Wiederholung von
Vergangenem, als ware es
gar nicht vergangen.
Derartige horizontale
Bewegungsentwurfe betonen
an Wiederholung eher das
Fremde, Sprengende, nicht
das
Zusammenhangschaffende.
Gegen Ende argumentiert
der korperliche
Nahbereich, schlagt um in
,,Umgebung: Lauft da
nicht ein Radio, ein
Fernseher, ein
Kuhlschrank? Geht da
nicht ein Wind draussen?
Fahrt nicht ein Auto?
Spielen da nicht Kinder?
Tonbander sind nur eine
schwache Simulation! Im
Optimalfall sollen
Fenster und Turen des
Konzertsaales geoffnet
und wieder geschlossen

Some
of the Ten Piano Pieces
op. 58 were already
successfully performed
during the composers
lifetime. At a concert in
the Solemnity Hall of
Helsinki University on 10
October 1911, two of the
pieces (Scherzino No. 2,
Serenade No. 9) had to be
repeated because of the
roar of applause.. Both
Sibelius and Mrs. Sigrid
Sundgren-Schneevoigt were
called forth with
storming applause. The
reviews were good,
describing the pieces as
the most ingenious piano
compositions reduced to a
small form, that have
been published in
Finland.

The evocative title is
inspired by plum blossoms
which in Chinese culture

as a compulsory work for
the 2019 Hong Kong
International Piano

material of the piece is
taken from the beginning

There are developments of

Bach Advanced SchoolIn
October 1909, Breitkopf &
Hartel succeeded in
winning Ferruccio Busoni
for the edition of Johann
Sebastian Bach's piano
works. Busoni had studied
the music of Bach more
intensively than almost
any other artist of his
time had. As a pianist,
arranger, theorist and
pedagogue, Busoni was
instrumental in bringing
Bach out of the 19th
century and into the 20th
century. That same year,
Busoni and two
collaborators, Bruno
Mugellini and Egon Petri,
began work on the
instructive edition,
which was to comprise 25
volumes. The first
volumes were published in
the spring of 1916, and
in May 1923, the Bach
Advanced School project
was finally completed.
This also marked the end
of Busoni's
thirty-year-long creative
involvement with Bach's
works, the impact of
which still reaches far
beyond the Bach-Busoni
formula.All alterations
and additions pursue the
educational intent of
affording the student
insight into the
mechanism of the
composition. Moreover,
they illustrate and
supplement the views
presented only in a
sketchy manner in the
introductions. In several
cases, it takes the sum
of the comments on the
various pieces to
constitute the
all-encompassing opinion
on one and the same

The work was commissioned
by the founders of the
AMRAM ENSEMBLE violin
virtuoso Elmira Darvarova
and master classical
saxophonist Ken Radnofsky
and premiered October
3,2016 at the
Center for Arts and Media
(ZKM) in Karlsruhe,
Germany. Darvarova and
Radnofsky were joined in
the USA by the third
member of the Ensemble,
the brilliant young
pianist and composer
Thomas Weaver. I want to
thank Elmira Darvarova
and Ken Radnofsky for
making it possible for me
to write this piece for
them, and to thank Dr.
Audrey Sprenger for
helping me to find two of
the three stories for
this piece by suggesting
the stories by Willa

Debussy's
friendship with the
versatile poet and
playwright Gabriel Mourey
began in 1899, and in
July 1907 Mourey offered
Debussy a libretto based
on Le roman de Tristan -
Joseph Bedier's
adaptation of a
twelfth-century Breton
romance by the
Anglo-Norman poet known
as Thomas - which had
recently been published
in Paris. Debussy
enthusiastically outlined
the four-act plot to
Victor Segalen that
October, and the main
differences from Wagner's
Tristan und Isolde are
that none of the action
takes place in Cornwall
and that Isolde of the
White Hands is found
guilty of cuckolding King
Marc with Tristan, who
has to rescue her from
the leper colony in which
she is abandoned in Act
1. She also betrays him
when he goes mad at the
end.
The idea of a
Tristan that restored its
'legendary character' and
had no connections with
Wagner, appealed to
Debussy, who was
extremely moved by the
circumstances of
Tristan's death. Even if
he thought that Mourey's
poetry was 'not very
lyrical and many passages
do not exactly invite
music', he did work on
the libretto and the
music that summer and
sent his publisher,
Jacques Durand, 'one of
the 363 themes for the
Roman de Tristan' in a
letter sent from
Pourville on 23 August,
1907. The present prelude
grows from this theme,
together with the
poignant Breton folksong
Le Faucon. After a short
atmospheric introduction,
Debussy's dance-like
theme (which is
definitely not a
leitmotif) gradually
gains momentum and after
it reaches its ecstatic
climax, representing the
transient happiness of
the lovers, it dissolves
into an expressive coda
and an elegiac close (all
growing from Debussy's
opening, off-stage
trumpet calls), leaving
us with the ultimate
tragedy of their
ill-fated
affair.
Unfortunat
ely, Mourey's actual
libretto has been lost
and the project
eventually foundered
because Bedier's cousin,
Louis Artus, wanted
Debussy to use the
scenario he had prepared
and copyrighted for the
stage, and would not
allow him to proceed with
Mourey's version.
Debussy, it need hardly
be said, would never have
dreamed of collaborating
with the author of the
vaudeville hit La culotte
(The pants)!
