This is how the composer
Camille Saint-Saens
described his impression
of what was probably
Charles Gounod's
best-known setting of the
mass. The work written in
1855 in honor of the
patron saint of church
music, soon became
well-known beyond the
borders of France and
acquired a degree of
popularity like almost no
other sacred composition.
In the Messe de sainte
Cecile, Gounod combines
sublime simplicity with
operatic-dramatic
elements and a colorful,
effective orchestration.

setting full of anguish
with expansive orchestral

trombone. This is

second chorale verse in a
four-part setting in
which, however, each
chorale line is
interrupted by a short
recitative (each one sung
by a different voice).
The bass, who closes the

melismatic passages. The

The heroic
pastoral Daphnis et Egle
was performed only once,
on 29 October 1753, for
the entertainment of King
Louis XV at Fontainebleau
and remained unpublished
until today.
This
edition is based on
Rameau's autograph
manuscript, a copy of the
separate parts, and the
libretto published by
Ballard in 1753. A
comparison of the sources
reveals two versions of
the work: the original
version and the one
revised for
Fontainebleau, whereby
the differences lie
mainly in the final
divertissement. This
edition recommends the
Fontainebleau
version--which is
actually more complete in
its musical form, in
particular with its
overture and two
ariettas--but also
reconstructs the original
state of the final
divertissement (presented
in the appendix) before
it was revised.

“Occasional
Oratorio†was
composed as a reaction to
a political event which
shook the whole of
England : the Jacobite
rebellion of 1745-46
against the Hanoverian
monarchy was crushed
under the leadership of
the Duke of Cumberland.
Handel, who was working
on the oratorio “
Judas Maccabaeusâ€
at the time, composed the
oratorio quickly and
reused some movements
from earlier works. With
the choice of a libretto
by Newburgh Hamilton he
demonstrated his support
for the monarchy. The
work was first performed
on 14 February 1746 at
the Covent Garden Theatre
in London .
For
the first time this
seldomly performed
oratorio which
nevertheless contains
wonderful music is
available in an Urtext
edition based on the
“ Halle Handel
Edition†. All
available sources have
been consulted. Further
movements which Handel
added for later
