Par MAW NICHOLAS. Nicholas Maw's Narration was commissioned by the BBC for the 2001 RNCM Manchester International Cello Festival. Having previously written solo works for violin, double bass and flute with a strong sense of narrative, Maw on this occasion decided to take this as a concept and build the whole work around it. The 20-minute work is cast in a single movement divided into four clearly defined sections. A declamatory opening, a fast moving pizzicato section, an arioso of gradually increasing intensity, and a passage marked 'Fast', which with nervous energy encompasses previous thoughts from the 'narrative' and climaxes in a short recitative just before the finish. / Répertoire / Violoncelle

The piece is a stream of impressions coming to one's mind where the direct relation between one event and the next can seem irrational. But the sum of all events creates a certain soundspace a certain direction. And althoughfragmented the form is the result of the interaction between three carefully calculated waveforms.Stream was commissioned by the Cologne Philharmonic for the 1999 Bach Festival as a part of a series of concertsfeaturing 6 leading cellists each playing one Bach solo suite and one commissioned work. Composition commissioned by Koln Musik.

Esa-Pekka Salonen's YTA III for solo Cello. This work was written for Anssi Karttunen who gave the first performance at the Musiikin aika Festival Viitasaari Finland on 23rd July1987.'I began to work on the YTA series in 1982. The first piece was for solo alto flute the second for pianoand the third for cello. The title ‘Yta’ is a Swedish word meaning ‘surface’. I wanted to writeverydemanding virtuoso music where the surface is extremely busy but the formal process partly hiddenbehind the frenetic stream of fast gestures is considerably slower.I tried to imagine what happens to the famous moth thatcircles around a lamp in Skryabin’s Versla flamme after the wings have finally touched the flame. A series of gestures is introduced in thebeginning. Each gesture undergoes an individual development culminating in spasms beforedyingaway. YTA III is a study of the death of an organism; the music is violent and ugly.' - Esa-Pekka Salonen

This composition was written quickly in a matter of days however the composer describes the longer process of writing the piece as unconscious preparation. There are opposite elements on display within the piece fragile coloristic passages give birth to energetic events with clear rhythmic and melodic charachter.More sharpely focused figures pass through different transformations then finally merge back to less dynamic but no less intensive filigration. In bringing these compositional elements together and by forcing opposite modes of expression the composer has aimed to force the listener to stretch their own sensibility. Work for Cello and Electronics which waspremiered by Anssi Karttunen at the Musica Nova Festival Bremen in May 1988.

Cello: Score Violoncelle [Partitions] Wilhelm Hansen
The image and concept of this piece is easiest to describe by using the visual i...(+)
The image and concept of this piece is easiest to describe by using the visual images of the Dutch artist M. C. Escher. He made many woodcuts where the whole surface of the picture has a figurative function often just in black and white. For example a row of white ducks 'transversing' the painting which are described by black ducks transversing in the opposite direction. In this way the two figures describe each other so to speak. In this piece melody has been approached in a similar way: a melody is used which can be framed in rhythmically different groupings - in groups of fours or fives etc- thus creating new hierarchical melodies which grow more and moreobvious to the ear. The initial melody then becomes background to the new melody until disappearing and a new rhythmical pattern is imposed on the second melody and so forth. Later the different 'rhythm melodies' are woven together creating a new perceptual image one that is at the same time actually a 'holographic' reproduction of the initial melody. The latter situation is similar to the way Bach makes hidden 3- or 4-part counterpoints in his Cello suites by intersecting the parts successively into beautifully interwoven patterns. The very static sections of the piece are chiefly inspired by the powerful singing of the buddhist-monks of Tibet who are able to relax their vocal chords to such an extent that they create an overpowering deep note not normally thought to be produced by a human voice. Figure and Ground Study I was first performed by Mats Olofson at the Numus Festival 1995.

| Celtic Play Along Violoncelle [Partition + CD] Universal Edition
Arrangeur: Martin Tourish. Martin Tourish is an accordionist, composer and music...(+)
Arrangeur: Martin Tourish. Martin Tourish is an accordionist, composer and musicologist from Co. Donegal, now based in Dublin. Celtic music is in his blood, for his ancestors were noted collectors of dance music manuscripts dating back to the 19th century. With many recordings to his credit, he now offers his expertise to performers wishing to explore the rich culture of Irish and other Celtic music on a variety of instruments.
'World Music - Celtic? presents material from the Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Cornish and Breton traditions. It makes no great technical demands on the players, but Tourish points out that notation of this music is often 'skeletal?, hence it is important to gain a knowledge of the individual traditions in question and, naturally, he offers plenty of information on performance practice.
The collection spans three centuries, from the blind bardic harpists of the 18th century to the international performers of the present day. Tourish accepts that this volume can only scratch the surface of a multi-faceted genre but hopes you will see it as a stepping stone to delve deeper into recordings, festivals and the very communities whence this music comes.
'World Music - Celtic? is available in six formats, each with complete recordings and backing tracks on CD: as solo versions for violin, violoncello, flute, clarinet or saxophone (with piano) and in an ensemble version for two melodic instruments (C, Bb or Eb), piano, guitar, bass and bodhrán./ Recueil / Violoncelle et Piano

Favourtie French Melodies-In creating these dozen arrangements I am unashamedly ...(+)
Favourtie French Melodies-In creating these dozen arrangements I am unashamedly cherry-picking from a long and rich seam of French music. I feel confident that younger players and those relatively new to the cello will enjoy my selection. Forgive my tongue-in-cheek title for the book French Baguettelles (I'm half French so I don't feel too guilty!) for the music herein has more than a hint of garlic about it. Although there are certainly serious overtones to one or two pieces there is a healthy dollop of silliness to lighten the mood. Apart from Sur la Pont d'Avignon which was reportedly written in the 15th century Frère Jacques which was a popular 18th century song and Tambourin which wasin all probability also written in the 18th century (Gossec did however live well into the 19th century) all of the pieces come from composers who lived in the Romantic period. Ravel and Debussy were of course known for their impressionistic colours though for the most part it is the accompaniments which reveal this characteristic most fully. I have endeavoured to keep the piano parts playable by mere mortals conscious of the fact that cello teachers may not possess a virtuosic piano facility but may nevertheless wish to turn their hand to accompanying pupils for concerts festivals exams etc. Many of the pieces were originally written for the piano either in its solo capacity (Ravel's Pavane Pour une Infante Défunte Chabrier's Idylle Satie's Gymnopedie 1 Debussy's La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin) or in duet form (Fauré's Berceuse from 'Dolly Suite'). Three orchestral pieces Bizet's L'Arlésienne Offenbach's Can-Can and Saint-Saëns's Danse Macabre lend a welcome dramatic overtone to the book while Franck's exquisite Panis Angelicus originally conceived as a choral piece rounds off the selection admirably. In the main it is the cello's capacity for lyricism that has steered my choice of music so really open up your sound and enjoy yourself with these ageless melodies.I wish you bonne chance!Baguette: a thin loaf of
