Par POULENC FRANCIS. Poulenc 's song cycle, Chansons Gaillardes was composed in 1925-1926 during the post-war euphoria. The cycle is essential to aspiring, advanced Baritones. Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was a highly prolific composer, and remains popular to this day. Chansons Gaillardes was composed towards the beginning of the composer's career for Baritone Pierre Bernac. At the first performance, Poulenc himself played the piano and the song cycle was immediately a hit. Chansons Gaillardes is made up of eight songs which alternate between lively and slow tempos; 1) TheFickle Mistress, 2) Drinking Song, 3) Madrigal, 4) Summoning the Fates, 5) Bacchanalian Couplets, 6) The Offering, 7) The Beautiful Youth, and 8) Serenade. As a song cycle with much variation, Poulenc 's Chansons Gaillardes is an exciting addition to the Baritone repertoire./ Répertoire / Baryton et Piano

The composer Rudolf Kelterborn about his work: ?I call the ten compositions for baritone and piano ?DUOS? because the voice and instrument parts are treated musically with absolute equality and indeed often go their own independent ways. Two duos (?Alles Gold? and ?Gegenlicht in den Bergen?) come from the ?Ensemble-Book I? for baritone and 14 instruments with texts by Erika Burkart (1990).
The 10 duos do not form a complete cycle that can be heard only as an entire work.
Smaller groups can be put together and presented according to text-related or musical aspects. The texts are by authors who have continued to inspire me for years.? / [10 Duos Pour Baryton et Piano] / Classique / Partition / Agrafé /

Par CATTLEY SARAH. Written for baritone Roderick Williams and pianist Susie Allan to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ralph Vaughan Williams, the five Frances Cornford settings of A Square and Candle-Lighted Boat further enhance Sarah Cattley’s reputation as an exciting young composer acutely sensitive to the nuances of English poetry. In addition to familiar sources ranging from ‘anon’ to George Mackay Brown, she has found inspiration in the work of women writers including Charlotte Brontë, Fredegond Shove, Moyra Tourlamain and Ursula Vaughan Williams. The finely tuned voice of Cambridge poet Frances Cornford (1886–1960) appealed especially for the touching immediacy of its insights, its probing of emotions from a woman’s viewpoint, and its wide human sympathy. In creative antithesis to the Vaughan Williams Songs of Travel, for which it is intended as a companion piece, a love of home is the theme of the cycle, its domestic interiors and country views illuminated in the warm tones and vivid portrayals of Cattley’s music. Performances at Thaxted and Paxton preceded a London premiere on 12 October 2022, marking the occasion of Vaughan Williams’s birth 150 years ago to the day. / Date parution : 2023-03-11/ Répertoire / Baryton et Piano

Baritone Voice And Piano Performing Score-Composed in 2012 the two pieces in Sadie Harrison’s Heartoutbursts! take their inspiration from traditional English folk.'...in the folk-song there is to be found the complete history of a people recorded by the race itself through the heartoutbursts of its healthiest output. It is a history compiled with deeper feeling and more understanding than can be found among the dates and data of thegreatest historian...'(Percy Grainger 1922)In 1905 Joseph Taylor won a Lincolnshire folksong competition with his rendition of Brigg Fair a song he had learnt from a gypsy. Australian composer Percy Graingersubsequently published a setting in his Lincolnshire Posy with Delius using the tune in his rhapsody Brigg Fair. Both composers sought to vivify the tradition of English folksong celebrating not only the ancient tunes and words but also the qualities of particular folksingers like Joseph Taylor.Harrison’s own Australian Heartoutbursts! follow unashamedly in the Grainger tradition with echoes of the original folktunes underpinning both songs Brigg Fair and The Seeds of Love. Although different in character both texts use similar images as analogies for the joys and despairing associated with love - the lark and violet symbolize youth the lily as virginity the red rose as true love and the willow representing falsehood and abandonment.

Baritone Voice-Four Traditional Songs is a setting of four heartbreaking and poignant folk songs by virtuoso contemporary composer Nico Muhly. Composed in 2011 the songs deal with themes of death murder and unimaginable events that are emotively arranged for Baritone Voice and Piano. Commissioned by Carnegie Hall in New York City and Wigmore Hall in London this work was first performed at those renowned venues in 2011 and 2012 respectively. Muhly states that he drew inspiration from old English folksongs and would spend time imagining stylised yet subtle musical settings with accompaniments. The result of this intensive periodof listening is Four Traditional Songs which lasts around 15 minutes and carries that incredible sense of sad balladry that counters the occasionally jaunty melodies. This edition is for Baritone Voice. Please click here to purchase the Countertenor version .

Composer's Notes:Heavenly Things is my fourteenth song-cycle but the first with piano accompaniment. I mention this because when I was asked to write this piece my first reaction was ‘what can I make of amedium that seems to me quintessentially 19th century’ and I was doubtful that I could produce anything that I would be happy with. Then I went to hear Christopher Maltman and Malcolm Martineau and was so impressed by the magicand intensity of their performance that I saw a ‘way in’ to what at first had seemed a problem. The choice of poems was obviously going to be crucial and I chose the Donne Holy Sonnets because of the dramatic possibilities theyoffer and the huge range of emotion that they encompass. In these settings the piano is always more than a mere accompaniment it tends either to be in dialogue with the voice or to have its own musical agenda which the voicereacts to in an independent but parallel way. nach Gedichten von Hermann Hesse-After emigrating from Berlin at the age of 16 the Jewish composer Ursula Mamlok wrote Four German Songs in 1958 while studying at the Manhattan School of Music. Based on texts from Hermann Hesse's collection Vom Baum des Lebens the songs reflect the uprooting from home. Mamlok juxtaposes Hesse's melancholy with an intensive tonal image which proceeds from expressionism with short motifs and tonal transgression yet ventures into new spheres of expression.
