In de opening horen we het aanbreken van de dag. Het haantje kraait. Even later luiden de klokken, die de mensen ter kerke roepen voor een plechtige viering ter opening van het feest. Een koraalachtig gegeven met een dalende chromatische melodiek verklankt de alom tegenwoordige “mijnheer pastoor”.
Dan klinkt de prachtige gregoriaanse melodie van het Veni Sancte Spiritus.
Het geheel speelt zich immers af op tweede Pinksterdag.
Na de kerk begeven we ons in een vrolijke optocht, waarin de vogel wordt meegedragen, naar het schietterrein. Er klinkt een gezellige mars.
Dan horenwe het gebabbel en geroep van de marketentsers. Met hun zware en ook hoge stemmen praten ze druk door elkaar. De optocht gaat verder langs het huis van de oude schutterskoning. Deze trekt mee en voert zijn charmante gezellin mee, hetgeen uiteraard een gevoelige muzikale wending teweegbrengt.
Dan begint de wedstrijd. Er wordt lustig op los geschoten. Als het mis is, wordt er gelachen, is het raak, dan komt er applaus. Als de vogel tenslotte is neergehaald is er een nieuwe schutterskoning en wordt er een feest aangericht.
Horen we echter aan het eind toch nog niet even de vogel roepen?
