Jan Sweelinck (1562-1621) was among the most famous organists of seventeenth century Europe and an influential composer in the Dutch and North German tradition. Bridging both Renaissance and Baroque styles the Dutch composer is best remembered for the inventive sparkling music he wrote for organ and other keyboard instruments. This remarkable treasury includes nearly all of Sweelinck's brilliant keyboard works most of which have survived only in widely scattered seventeenth century manuscripts. In Sweelinck's day these were some of Europe's most popular pieces for organ and keyboard. Nowadays they retain every bit of their original intensity and vigour. Reproduced inthis authoritative complete-resource edition they will be welcomed by serious keyboard artists who will find them as praiseworthy today as they were when first known and played in Europe over three hundred years ago.

Flexible Woodwind Ensembl-This suite of folk songs is scored for woodwind quarte...(+)
Flexible Woodwind Ensembl-This suite of folk songs is scored for woodwind quartet and a single unpitched drum. Although the nominal scoring is for flute two clarinets and bassoon the piece has considerable inbuilt flexibility of scoring. The options for instruments on each part are as follows: Part 1: Flute oboe or soprano saxophone Part 2: Bb Clarinet or alto saxophone Part 3: Bb clarinet alto saxophone or tenor saxophone Part 4: Bassoon bass clarinet or baritone saxophoneThe piece may be played by any combination of these instruments. Where necessary some passages have been transposed down an octave in the soprano alto and tenor saxophone parts.Where this occurs the lower pitch is also included in the score. There are also a few notes in the bass clarinet part of the March which have been taken up the octave through necessity; similarly this is indicated in the score. The drum should be unsnared and of medium low pitch. A bodhran tenor drum low tom-tom or floor tom are suggested although in the end it is up to the performer! The folk songs used in the piece are not particularly well known these days. 'Gan to the Kye' is an example of the rich culture of traditional music from Northumbria. The title means 'Go to the cows' and is a love song in which the herdsman asks his lover (in a gesture possibly lacking somewhat in romance) to accompany him whilst he tends his herd of cattle. The second movement is a setting of 'Rosemary Lane' a beautiful Somerset song. It tells of a serving girl ill-used by a sailor; as so often in traditional music the beauty of the tune is quite at odds with the unpleasant circumstances related.'Gently Johnny' is a good-humoured song in which the enthusiastic suitor is teased by the object of his affections: he is asked to cool his ardour whilst at the same time being left in no doubt that his attentions may be as bold as he wishes! The middle section uses another song this time from Middlesex called 'Jack Williams'.

Her clothes were unbelievable dirty and ragged and she too was unwashed. Her ash-blond hair hung down in long skeins.... But best of all she was beautiful and in heruntutored way she could sing. She smiled as she sang smiled rather sadly and sang only a single line of a song'.Niles requested that the girl repeat the fragment seven times paying her a quarter perperformance and left with 'three lines of verse a garbled fragment of melodic material—and a magnificent idea'. Cecilia McDowall's Drink The Sky for SA Piano and Percussion. This is an uplifting and expressive setting of a fun descriptive text by Christie Dickason that characterizes the sky in an imaginative way. The compelling melodies are underpinned by a dynamic Piano part often featuring rippling quavers and characterful interjections from the Glockenspiel and suspended Cymbal complement the narrative. A contrasting middle section in triple time quotes from the Northumbrian folk song 'When the boat comes in' while the final section is affirmatory in feel emphatically repeating the final line of the poem 'and I will grow'.

Cantata for string orchestra and chorus. Triptych represents the concatenation and re-orchestration of two extant works. Movement I was commissioned with funds from The RVW Trust for the inaugural concert of the Choir of London conducted by Jeremy Summerly in Christ Church, Spitalfields on 18th December, 2004 - the work, premièred as Threnody, was subsequently toured by the Choir to Jerusalem and the West Bank from 19th-26th December, 2004. Movements II and III, commissioned by Portsmouth Grammar School with financial support from the PRS Foundation, were premièred as And There Was a Great Calm in a contiguous version for lower strings and upper voices by the Portsmouth Grammar School Chamber Choir and the London Mozart Players in a concert at Portsmouth Anglican Cathedral on 13th November, 2005 conducted by Nicolae Moldoveanu. The title of this latter section is taken from Thomas Hardy's poem of the same name, written at the signing of the Armistice on 11th November, 1918 - a couplet from which is set, in a moment of tranquillity, in the final movement. Relatively new to living in New York, I am much more aware of the independent, vibrant cultural plurality that exists today - it's probably the single most dazzling facet of the City and is largely responsible for the infamous 'edginess' that pervades daily life there. With this in mind, I set to work on Threnody (movement I here) in 2004 - I wanted to write something that was relevant to the Israeli/Palestinian issue without losing that City 'edge'. The texts, in English, are excerpted from a variety of sources: William Penn, William Blake, the Psalms of David and Muhammad Rajab Al-Bayoumi, an Egyptian poet of the early twentieth-century. Fast and rhythmically influenced by the music of North Africa in its syncopations, this movement was the first composition that evolved entirely from my New York perspective. From the moment that the commission for And There Was a Great Calm (movements II and amp - III here) was offered, I knew the piece I was about to embark upon would end up being linked with Threnody in some way. I realized that what I had been aiming for in Threnody served as a template for this new piece, originally composed for a Remembrance Sunday concert. Musical works connected with commemoration or memorials are often suitably pensive and slow - I wanted to start with that concept, but to bring in some of the relentless urban rhythms that had been such a large influence on my life in the preceding two years. The result is that that the second movement is quiet and gentle (a moment of recollection), while the final movement is much faster and vibrant, returning to a more openly elated rendering of the start of Triptych (the texts here dealing with transmigration and the future). and nbsp - I gratefully acknowledge the assistance of Bruce Ruben and Judith Clurman, as well as that of my parents, with the collation of the texts. Par RAE JAMES. This work was written for and dedicated to the clarinettist Mark Walton OAM by way of a thank you for all his fine recordings and performances of my music. It was premiered in London by Mark and his accompanist David Miller OAM, on June 29th 2014 in the Princess Alexandra Hall at Royal Over-Seas League, Mayfair in a concert entitled ‘Clarinet Hidden Treasures from England’ which was organised to launch Mark’s CD of the same name. The two-disc album, as its title suggests, contains works for clarinet and piano in a variety of styles by English composers including Mike Cornick, Jonathan FeBland, Paul Harris, Paul Harvey, Joseph Horovitz, Gordon Jacob, Christopher Norton and Sid Phillips.
This sheet music album includes two pieces:
Cloudy Bay is in the north east of New Zealand’s South Island, brought to world fame by the fine Sauvignon Blanc wine sharing the same name. This movement is very dreamy and reflective in nature and was inspired by Mark’s exquisite, silky sound.
Beatin’ about the Bush! is a celebration of Mark’s highly successful pioneering outreach programme of workshops bringing music to young musicians in the Outback of Australia and beyond. This is a lively movement in 3/8 time designed to display both performers’ dexterity, humour and musicianship./ Répertoire / Clarinette et Piano
