Alex Freeman?s Under the arching heavens: A Requiem (2018) was commissioned by Nils Schweckendiek and the Helsinki Chamber Choir to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1918 Finnish civil war. Structured around the Latin liturgy of the mass for the dead, the work has a duration of more than an hour and also incorporates poems in Finnish, Swedish and English, reflecting both the specific reason for the commission and the universality of human suffering caused by war. In the non-liturgical texts chosen by Freeman, birds are a recurring image, as is that of a mother and child. The work ends with lines by Walt Whitman from a poem written in the aftermath of the American Civil War; lines described by the composer as ?some of the most comforting poetry in the English language.? Also included on the disc is A Wilderness of Sea, another recent choral piece which draws on works by Shakespeare, and the poet?s images of the sea, and of mankind?s relationship with it. Concerto for Piano and Orchestra - Arranged on basis of the Cantata Yellow River. Par XINGHAI XIAN. Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky may have influenced it and Lang Lang has included it in his repertoire: the piano concerto 'Yellow River' features a brilliant virtuoso solo part, expressiveness and drama, contemplation, great pathos and wit. Based on the cantata of the same name by the famous Chinese composer Xian Xinghai (1905-1945), the concerto, arranged by Yin Chengzong among others, is similarly characterized by the combination of Chinese folk music and elements of the Peking Opera, with traditional European art music. 'Yellow River', the cradle of Chinese civilization and a symbol of the spirit of the Chinese people, can be compared to the 'Moldau' from Smetana's symphonic poem 'Má Vlast'. Commissioned by Caramoor Music Festival in New York and premiered July 14, 2017 by the Argus Quartet, this work is in no small part a response to this quartet's sense of adventure and expressive emotional range. Inspired by two end-of-civilization novels the composer was reading prior to composing the work, the quartet unfolds in a single movement, loosely based on plot lines in both novels. One of the novels includes a Traveling Symphony, an assortment of musicians and actors who travel the countryside for decades playing symphonies, jazz and orchestral arrangements of popular music alongside performances of Shakespeare plays, reminiscent of medieval troupes traveling the countryside in plague-ridden times. The work is written so that the quartet embodies the Traveling Symphony, not only playing music but also singing and 'stage whispering' fragments of King Lear and other text across the collection of nine scenes./ Répertoire / Quatuor à Cordes

Par PROKOFIEV SERGEI. Interestingly there are two different versions of Prokofiev’s second piano concerto, the first written between 1912 and 1913, the second written in 1923. However, during the Russian Civil War, the original manuscript of the Concerto was destroyed in a fire in Prokofiev’s apartment in St. Petersburg. In 1923 he recreated the score from memory, effectively composing the second edition of the work, which was very different. Prokofiev wrote to a friend: I have so completely rewritten the second concerto that it might be considered the fourth (his third piano concerto having been written in the meantime). At the time of composition, the concerto's wild temperamentleft some exalted, whereas others were horrified by the jarring and at the time futuristic sound. Today, however, it is generally recognised as a masterpiece and is one of the most virtuosic works in the piano concerto repertoire.
