Critical edition by Michael Talbot. The vast majority of violin sonatas from Vivaldi's time, including those of Vivaldi himself, have come down to us in the form of a score employing two staves: one for violin, and one for bass. This guarantees that, although portions of the work may be missing, what survives is textually complete. Exceptionally, five of Vivaldi's violin sonatas are preserved solely in a partbook for violin held by the Diözesanarchiv, Graz, the complementary part for cello having disappeared. The sonatas appear to date from the period between the Dresden group (1716-1717) and the Manchester set (c. 1726). Three of the sonatas, which all have four movements, possess partial concordances in other sources, with which they share two or three movements, but two of them - RV 11 and RV 37 - have so far been found only in Graz (with the exception of an incipit for RV 11 found in a contemporary thematic catalogue). This critical edition makes these two works available for study and performance. Cesar Franck's Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the violin repertoire, a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe.Franck's correspondence proves that he was directly involved in the printing of the sonata. Consequently, our new scholarly performing edition draws mainly on the first edition of the separate violin part. For the piano part, the first edition of the version for violoncello and piano, which appeared during Franck's lifetime, was an important source as many engraver's errors found in the first printing of the violin version had been corrected in this violoncello version. In addition to these sources, both autograph scores of the violin sonata (Franck's working copy and his fair copy) were consulted to clarify questionable readings.Bärenreiter's new edition also includes two short separate movements for the same instrumentation: the early 'Andantino quietoso? op. 6 (1843), a hauntingly beautiful piece composed for performances with Franck's violinist brother Joseph, as well as 'Mélancolie?, first published after Franck's death in 1911. For violinists and pianists, they’re also of particular importance due to the wealth of information by Schumann, Joseph Joachim, and Wilhelm Joseph von Wasielewski on fingering, bowing, and phrasing in these three pieces.
While working on the composition and publication of the Romances op. 22, Schumann was in close contact with these two great violinists of the nineteenth century. She consulted Wasielewski while completing an early version of Romance no. 1, while Joachim was involved in a later, complete version and the preparation of the first edition.
Jacqueline Ross’ scholarly-critical edition is the first to include, in addition to the first edition, the numerous manuscript sources that survive today, such as: Schumann’s draft manuscript, presentation autographs for Wasielewski and Joachim, as well as copyists’ parts once owned by the two violinists.
This edition has two separate parts for the violin, allowing its use in two ways: first, as a straightforward Urtext edition: and second, as an edition informed by historical performing practice, supported by the detailed Performing Practice Commentary on nineteenth-century violin and piano technique./ Répertoire / Violon et Piano

Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. Without any doubt J.S. Bach’s cycle of the three Sonatas and Partitas BWV 1001-1006 represents one of the pinnacles of classical European music. According to C.P.E. Bach a contemporary voice stated that there was „nothing more accomplished in order to become a good violinist“ than his father’s works. The cycle reflects the entire harmonic and polyphonic musical universe of Bach’s time, so masterfully composed that it can be rendered within the limited framework of but a single instrument – the violin.
The new publication of the Sonatas and Partitas BWV 1001-1006 (BA 5256) constitutes a complete revision of our older edition (BA 5116). The musical text has been edited by Peter Wollny and represents the most up-to-date state of research as published in the New Bach Edition – Revised (NBArev), volume BA 5937-01. The edition is mainly based on Bach’s unusually clear autograph which is considered among the most beautiful manuscripts by the composer. All relevant secondary sources have been taken into consideration in order to clarify ambiguities. These include five contemporary copies, including one by Anna Magdalena Bach, and four manuscripts from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The musical text has been newly engraved with a clear and generous layout, whereby page turns and pagination have been retained from the previous edition. This allows the straightforward navigation between a copy of the previous and this new edition.
