Extending his repertoire for the guitar Skempton this time introduces it into the realm of a chamber ensemble in the form of five miniatures. The mix of mellow timbres creates a soothing but thoughtful set of pieces.

Par GOWIK KRYSTYNA. Fives for piano comprises music for beginners ? miniature pieces for five successive notes of a particular scale. However, those notes can be written in different octaves, with the following aims in mind: ? to teach the quick recognition of how notes are written on the stave, ? to teach how to move around the keyboard and to recognise the sounds of the instrument?s registers, ? to make the music more interesting. There are always five notes, one for each finger, so the fingerings are not numbered and we do not introduce any techniques for crossing fingers. We assign particular fingers to specific notes ? with the help of an insert included with the edition ? and we play. Thanks to the systematic use of all five fingers, we can develop all the fingers evenly and at the same time, which is particularly important with regard to the fourth and fifth fingers. These works may touch on five-finger exercises to a limited extent, but not entirely, as in that method there are different notes in the right and left hands, while here they are the same for both hands. In my works, we learn different keys and modal scales. Each work is preceded by information about the key or scale employed and about the notes that are used. I have also taken care over articulation and dynamics. The budding pianists might try playing some of the works with pedal. I hope you enjoy working with Fives! String Quartet No.3 'Three Miniatures' was composed by Per Nørgård in 1959. Manuscript copy. Programme Note: The spectrum of sound the gesticulation in short the very nature of the strings has always had a central place in my output demonstrated by the numbers of string quartets concertos with string soloist chamber and solo works. The interest dates back to my school years when I was fortunate to be able to compose for a cello-playing schoolmate and to accompany him on the piano. I discovered then the innumerable nuances of sound and playing varieties offered by just one bow four strings and fivefingers... The Three Miniatures for string quartet has a consequent experimental structure that dictates every note in the three extremely short movements. Each member of the quartet thus plays his own little melody a certain (but different) number of times so that the brand new soundscopes constantly appear in spite of the unchanging parts due to their different length. John Luther Adams' Five Yu'pik Dances for solo Harp. Composed in 1991. Duration: 7-8 minutes. 'This set of miniatures is based on traditional dance songs of the Yupik Eskimo people ofWestern Alaska. In their original forms these melodies would be sung in unsion. The first third and fifth songs would be accompanied by frame drums. The second and fourth are game songs for jumping rope andjuggling pebbles. Aside from the obvious difference in instrumentation my settings of these songs differ from the Yup'ik originals in other respects. I have extended and varied the melodies and addedcountermelodies ostinato figurations introductions interludes and codas. The first four melodies are drawn from the collection Yup'ik Eskimo songs compiled by Thomas F. Johnston and Tupou L. Pulu andpublished by the University Of Alaska. The fifth was 'loaned' to me by Yup'ik singer and dancer Chuna McIntyre who learned it in his village of Eek Alaska. The poems preceding each piece are rough translationsof the words to the songs. These verses are often cryptic and enigmatic. Their obscurity is increased because some of the words or their meanings have been lost over time.' - John Luther Adams

Carl Nielsen is perhaps the best known Danish composer and this volume contains a collection of Five Pieces For Piano from Opus 3. There is an interesting range of feeling and sentiment in these intimate miniatures.

The task: to write a piece that could involve children as players singers and composers alongside a professional symphony or chamber orchestra. The solution: a peace-cry for the biosphere in which the collaborative nature of theenterprise is a metaphor for a wished-for human enlightenment to the ways of the natural world. Davies provides five musical elements and five ways of development and uses these to illustrate five branches of life on earth:water-plants trees fish birds and mammals (including man). There is a space for answers from children's instrumental groups and then a larger space in which the children can develop the given ideas perhaps with members of theorchestra. Davies returns as composer to depict through an excess of development creation turned sour. Finally everyone comes together with a unison hymn with orchestra and instrumental groups celebrating the turn of thetide.This work for young instrumentalists children's chorus and orchestra was commissioned by the Association of British Orchestras as the centrepiece of an education project which coincided with the implementation of theNational Curriculum for music in schools in England and Wales echoing similar developments in Scotland and Northern Ireland.Score. A cantata for tenor and chamber orchestra with words from The Well by George Mackay Brown and a German translation by Gunther Bauer Schenk. The centre-piece of a chamber orchestra trilogy (see also Sinfonia Concertante andSinfonietta Accademica) and is a symphonic song-cycle in five continuous movements. The text ponders the influence of modern times on ancient ways of life.Into The Labyrinth is the second of a set of three works forchamber orchestra written in 1982-3 and is the only one using voice. The first performance took place in June 1993 in St. Magnus' Cathedral Orkney as part of the St. Magnus Festival.
