Piano

He seems to have asked his friend Joseph Haydn to write a festive “thankoffering” in the form of a Mass for the famous pilgrimage church of Mariazell in Styria. Haydn began the work in 1782 and recently the original parts to the Missa Cellensis were found in the organ loft of the splendid baroque church at Mariazell.Haydn’s “Mariazellermesse” has always been one of his most popular works. The “Volkstümlichkeit” (which one might translate as “down to-earthiness”) the miraculous fusion of polyphonic forms with the language and form of the Vienna classical school – note that the Kyrie is in sonata form with shortened recapitulation and coda – the brilliant orchestration to which the trumpets and drums contribute so much festive joyousness: all these have won the hearts of audiences everywhere whenever the Mass was given.- Urtext from Joseph Haydn Werke- Full score parts and vocal score available for sale

Symphony in Bb major Hob. I:102-The twelve London Symphonies??? comprise the sublime final statement of Haydn???s symphonic ??uvre. They were written for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon and Haydn himself conducted their premieres during his lengthy stays in the English metropolis in 1791/92 and 1794/95. The energetic surging B-flat-major Symphony no. 102 belongs to the group of the last three symphonies premiered in early 1795. Exceptionally Haydn here dispenses with the clarinets that are otherwise generally featured in his late symphonies. The instrumentation of the Adagio is also unusual in that Haydn includes trumpets and timpani both muted. This study edition adopts the musical text of theHaydn Complete Edition thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. An informative preface and a brief Critical Report make the handy score an ideal companion for all current and soon-to-be Haydn fans.

It owes its epithet to its unique beginning: a solo drumroll in the timpani ushers in the slow introduction. This edition is the first to come as close as possible to the lost original and has been compiled using all currently available sources. The score has been fully amended in its original orchestration for two oboes or English horn strings and organ. At a later performance of this work probably in 1803 Haydn attempted to accommodate the intervening changes in musical taste. Although Haydn is said to have composed about 60string trios most of them must be discounted for source-critical and stylistic reasons. The eighteen trios which definitely lay claim to authenticity were published in volumes 1 and 2. The third volume contains eight triosattributed to Haydn although his authorship cannot be proven. In addition to the Urtext edition (HN 628) these charming works are now also available in a handy score format. It had been made by the Kapellmeister at Passau cathedral Joseph Friebert and Haydnwas quite impressed except: 'I believe I could have done the voice parts better'. He acquired a copy and set about making his own vocal version taking over most of the text. Haydn particularly liked his own vocal work and itwas also enthusiastically received by his contemporaries. London with its bustling musical scene always provided Haydn with welcome surroundings at a time when the Flute was extraordinarily popular among English amateurs. The Earl of Abingdon an accomplished flautist undoubtedly enjoyed playing these entertaining trios. Abingdon was a member of Haydn?s circle of acquaintances in London and a composer in his own right: a theme from one of his songs (?The Lady?s Mirror?) servedHaydn for a set of variations in the second trio. Neither of the men could have foreseen the huge success that these cheerful and straightforward pieces would enjoy among music-lovers all over the world.

“Missa brevis in F in score. This was the first Mass which Mr. Haydn composed whilst still a student” says an entry in the catalogue of Haydn’s musical estate. Circa 1798/99 Haydn entered the work without an incipit in his working catalogue as “Missa brevis in F. / a due Soprani”. Around 1805/06 he added in shaky decrepit handwriting to the title “Missa.” on the front page of the organ part of one of the set of parts prepared by his copyist Johann Elßler: “Brevis / di me Giuseppe Haydn mpria / 1749”. This date the earliest yet found on a work by Haydn corresponds to the title of the Haydn catalogue whichindicates the eighteenth year of Haydn’s life i. e. 1749/50 as the starting point of his work: “Catalogue of all those compositions which I happen to remember writing from my 18th to my 73rd year of life.” In 1805 Haydn set about adding further instruments to the original scoring for two violins and figured organ bass and by 15th February 1806 the larger instrumentation was ready as is evidenced by a letter written on this very day by the Haydn biographer Georg August Griesinger. It is however by no means certain whether the seventy-three-year-old undertook this adaptation himself. - Urtext from Joseph Haydn Werke - Full score parts (BA4644) and vocal score (BA4644-90) available for sale - Early string version and later version with wind instruments and timpani

Mass in Time of War-Haydn was in England in 1795 when he received word from his new Prince Nicolaus II Esterházy that the Esterházy orchestra was to be reformed and Haydn was to serve again as active Capellmeister.Prince Nicolaus II demanded little from his Capellmeister except the usual routine of administration; but Haydn was to compose every year a new Mass for the name day of the Princess Josepha Maria which was celebrated the Sunday afterwards in the Bergkirche at Eisenstadt. It is known that a new Haydn mass was performed before a packed congregation in the Piaristenkirche in Vienna on St. Stephen?s Day (26 December) 1796. The writer of these notes examined when preparingthis edition the music archives of the church and found contemporary parts on the Missa in tempore belli in the church; and it seems certain that this (and not the Heiligmesse) was the work performed on that occasion and thus also the work which Haydn had just finished and performed in Eisenstadt.Urtext from Joseph Haydn WerkeFull score parts (BA4652) vocal score (BA4652-90) and study score format 22.5 x 16.5cm (TP94) available for sale

Haydn’s Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra in C major (Hob. VIIb:1) w...(+)
Haydn’s Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra in C major (Hob. VIIb:1) was probably composed between 1762 and 1765 when he was already director of music to Prince Esterh zy. It may have been writtenfor the cellist in the court Orchestra Joseph Weigl (1740-1820) for whom Haydn most likely also wrote the solo Cello parts in his early symphonies. Weigl was a member of the Esterh zy ensemble from 1761 to 1769 andthereafter served as a principle cellist in various Viennese ensembles. The concerto was rediscovered by Oldrich Pulkert who in 1961 found an eighteenth-century manuscript copy (Prag National Museum Fonds Radenin) andpublished the concerto in 1962. Previously the existence of this piece was known only through Haydn’s entry in his private list of works (the so-called ‘Entwurf’ [‘draft’] catalogue). The Orchestral setting ismodest: besides the Strings (with a non-obligato Bassoon doubling the Bass part) there are two Oboes and two Horns which are reserved almost exclusively for the tutti passages. This Piano reduction is based on the text givenin the complete edition of Haydn’s works as edited by the Joseph Haydn Institute Cologne (Joseph Haydn Werke Series III Vol.2 with Preface and Critical Report published by G. Henle Verlag Munich 1981). The Cello partin the Piano reduction is identical to that of the complete edition and thus follows the Prague source as closely as possible even in the expression marks and in certain peculiarities of notation.

Par HAYDN JOSEPH. Only eleven of the over one hundred symphonies by Joseph Haydn...(+)
Par HAYDN JOSEPH. Only eleven of the over one hundred symphonies by Joseph Haydn are composed in a minor key. Written in the early 1770s, the Symphony Hob.I:52 in C minor bears some similarities to the slightly earlier Symphony in E minor Hob.I:44 (?Mourning?, BA 10988), not only because they both are composed in a minor key but also because they both feature a pair of horns tuned at different pitches. Haydn seems to have experimented with differently tuned horns inspired by an article in Johann Adam Hiller?s journal ?Musikalische Nachrichten und Anmerkungen? of July 1770, which suggested to tune the horns a minor third apart in order to expand the total horn range. While Haydn followed this recommendation just like that in the E-minor symphony, he chose to have the horns tuned a major sixth apart (high C and E-flat) in the outer movements of the C-minor symphony Hob. I:52, resulting in an unusual horn sound within the orchestral texture. In continuation of the collaboration between Bärenreiter and G. Henle Verlag, this edition is based on the Urtext of the Complete Edition ?Joseph Haydn Works? published by G. Henle Verlag. - Urtext of the Complete Edition ?Joseph Haydn Works? published by G. Par HAYDN JOSEPH.

| Franz Joseph Haydn:
Symphony No.26 In D minor
- Lamentazione: Ensemble:
Score Orchestre Barenreiter
Based on the Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn.Orchestral part...(+)
Based on the Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn.Orchestral parts available in a large format (25.5 x 32.5 cm).Haydn?s Symphony No.26 received its nickname Lamentazione during his lifetime though it is unclear whether this stems directly from the composer. This work probably originated no later than 1770. Its first and second movements quote excerpts from Gregorian chants used in Holy Week. In Haydn?s day it was customary to play individual movements in church services and it may be assumed that these two movements were performed and possibly composed independently from each other.Continuing thecollaboration between Bärenreiter and the Henle publishing company in the areas of large-scale choral works operas and symphonies Haydn?s Symphony No.26 is appearing based on the Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn. The complete performance material for several of Haydn?s Sturm und Drang symphonies and all of the London and Paris symphonies has already been published.
