Pianolude aborde des aspects de l'enseignement du piano rarement évoqués côte à côte dans un même recueil: intégrer la musique de notre temps à l'enseignement traditionnel. Parallèlement à l'apprentissage traditionnel et progressif du jeu pianistique, Pianolude convie les enfants à jouer avec l'ensemble des ressources sonores de l'instrument. Le CD inclus dans l'ouvrage propose l'interprétation de l'ensemble du répertoire et fournit des exemples de réalisation des activités de création.

A lui seul, le titre de ce recueil est tout un programme. Pianolude associe l'instrument et le jeu, mêlant les aspects les plus traditionnels de l'apprentissage pianistique à une exploration ludique de l'instrument.
Comme un livre d'images. Sa présentation, très esthétique, regorge d'illustrations poétiques et humoristiques dignes des plus jolis albums pour enfants. Le graphisme clair, les caractères en lettres attachées, le papier légèrement glacé et la reliure à spirales en font un album agréable à feuilleter sur lequel on s'attarde volontiers. Les premières pages se parcourent comme un livre d'images. On y découvre quelques suggestions de jeu autour du piano. L'élève peut ainsi s'en inspirer pour explorer et découvrir de lui-même tout un monde sonore: timbres, intensités, durées, tessitures, modes de jeu... et s'approprier ainsi ce monstre sonore qu'est le piano.
L'enfant prenant graduellement possession de l'instrument, l'approche de la lecture se fait graduellement à partir du do central, mains alternées. On s'échappe assez vite de l'incontournable do majeur pour explorer des échelles plus colorées. Les notions musicales et solfégiques sont abordées de manière très progressive, associant chaque nouvel élément théorique à l'étude d'une pièce musicale. L'introduction des altérations se fait assez tôt et les mains se déplacent plutôt rapidement sur l'ensemble du clavier par le biais des 8va.
Jouer tout seul ou avec les autres. La plupart des pièces sont présentées avec un accompagnement du professeur - ou d'un élève plus avancé - dont les harmonies, enrichissant les mélodies jouées par l'élève, viennent parfois chatouiller l'oreille de légères dissonances et taquiner l'imaginaire de sonorités nouvelles. De nombreuses pièces sont écrites pour quatre, six ou huit mains. Conçues comme des pièces à géométrie variable, on peut n'en jouer que la partie principale - écrite en grosses notes - ou bien y associer les autres parties en les distribuant à d'autres élèves pour une version plus collective. Ces pièces, plus abordables que les pièces en solo, véritable intermède récréatif dans la progression de l'élève, constituent ainsi un bon outil pour la lecture à vue et la pratique collective.
Tout un monde sonore. Le répertoire très éclectique des pièces de Pianolude est constitué en grande majorité de compositions originales. On y trouve quelques arrangements de chansons du répertoire populaire traditionnel: Au clair de la lune, j'ai perdu mon âne, Ah vous dirai-je maman... quelques petites pièces un peu jazzy: New Orleans Parade, Comme un blues, Oh When the saints... D'autres, plus exotiques, comme La petite maison russe ou La poupée chinoise, invitent doucement au voyage musical.
Mais la plus grande originalité de cette méthode réside dans l'introduction d'un langage plus contemporain, incluant les codages non traditionnels et des modes de jeux spécifiques (clusters, glissandi, notes muettes, séquences aléatoires, écriture graphique. jeu dans les cordes...), mettant la musique contemporaine à la portée des plus réfractaires. La première pièce, intitulée En colère, écrite dans une alternance de notes traditionnelles (deux notes autour du do central), de clusters et de petites séquences d'improvisation guidées, regorge d'indications expressives: en colère, en se calmant, grosse colère, ...énorme colère, ...très calme. Sans efforts considérables et par le biais des humeurs et de leurs contrastes, l'élève aborde les rudiments du codage musical: aigu/grave, bas/haut, droite/gauche, fort/doux, long/court... Parmi les autres pièces utilisant un langage contemporain, on trouve l'irrésistible Chant des étoiles, qui recueille un succès certain auprès des élèves - et de leurs parents - mêlant clusters, notes aléatoires, glissando dans une ambiance délicieusement céleste, scintillante, toute faite de résonances entremêlées. Les ambiances proposées à travers ces courtes pièces rejoignent l'imaginaire de l'élève et permettent par ce biais de développer son sens de l'écoute et d'accroître sensiblement sa palette sonore.
Un CD, inclus dans l'ouvrage, présente l'enregistrement de la plupart des pièces de la méthode, interprétées sur un vrai piano avec beaucoup de finesse et de musicalité, ainsi que des exemples de réalisation de petites créations effectuées par des enfants. Celles-ci constituent des pistes pour l'improvisation et, pourquoi pas, pour l'élaboration d'un langage plus personnel.
Pédagogie du piano contemporain ou pédagogie contemporaine du piano? Cette méthode est le résultat d'une réflexion collective des auteurs, inspirée par l'expérience sur le terrain d'une pédagogie de la musique contemporaine. Sans que celle-ci soit assénée manière obsessive, Pianolude s'en inspire pour éveiller la curiosité de l'élève pour des sonorités moins conventionnelles que la plupart de celles des méthodes plus traditionnelles. Si cet ouvrage peut paraître au premier abord un peu dispendieux, la qualité de sa présentation et la richesse de son contenu dépassent de loin le prix qu'il en coûte.
Le choix d'une méthode est souvent difficile, très personnel et toujours subjectif. On choisit une méthode parce qu'elle adhère aux principes de notre enseignement, qu'elle répond aux besoins du moment et traduit un certain état d'esprit. À moins qu'il ne s'agisse d'un état d'âme. On s'y essaye comme on essaye un nouveau vêtement. Avec le temps, on s'y sent parfois un peu à l'étroit, un peu mal à l'aise. Alors on en change. Pour avoir essayé Pianolude, l'avoir testé, expérimenté, pratiqué depuis sa parution en 2002 avec la plupart de mes élèves débutants, je peux dire que j'ai trouvé là vêtement à ma taille.
En résumé, c'est un support riche et éclectique pour la première année d étude du piano. À l'aide de son vaste choix de pièces, le professeur peut établir son propre parcours, en fonction de ses propres goûts et de ceux de ses élèves. Son approche ludique favorise la recherche et la créativité tout en intégrant une certaine exigence musicale et en incitant à une écoute active et à un jeu expressif.

L'idée d'une 'base auditive sensorielle' représentant un préalable indispensable à toute éducation musicale est sans doute le point commun le plus marquant reliant les courants pédagogiques musicaux du XXe siècle. De Kodály à Willems, de Martenot à Dalcroze, en passant par Orff, toutes ces pédagogies, aux sensibilités pourtant bien différentes, se rejoignent en effet lorsque se pose la question du sens donné à l'enseignement de la musique. C'est bien par le ressenti que l'enfant peut discerner, mémoriser, reproduire pour ensuite analyser, comprendre et même transmettre. Puisque, comme l'écrivait si justement Maria Montessori 'L'enfant nous demande de l'aider à agir tout seul', nous nous sommes posé, lors de la conception de cet ouvrage, la question suivante : comment proposer à l'enfant, et ce dès le début de son éducation musicale, une méthodologie l'amenant à être le plus autonome possible, à s'ouvrir sans inhibition aux différents paramètres sonores, à découvrir de vastes répertoires, à appréhender de manière ludique l'acte musical, sa lecture, son écriture, pour faire sienne cette maxime de Guillaume de Machaut : 'Et Musique est une science qui veut qu'on rie et chante et danse' ?
Nous avons choisi de structurer cette méthode en chapitres se composant chacun d'une partie rythmique et d'une partie mélodique.
1. Par rythme, nous entendons tout d'abord l'éveil à la pulsation et à la durée, au sentiment mesuré et à la battue de mesure, à la carrure et à la conscience des phrases musicales et de la forme. En ce sens, nous proposons un éveil rythmique axé autour des longues et des brèves ('courtes') permettant ainsi à l'enfant d'asseoir sa pulsation tout en ancrant les notions de binaire et de ternaire. Cela permet aussi d'éveiller son sens de la prosodie et des métriques dites irrégulières, proches notamment des répertoires populaires de l'Europe de l'Est.
Bien entendu, toutes les formules rythmiques constituant le programme usuel d'une première année sont abordées. Nous tenons à ce que l'élève s'imprègne ainsi du système rythmique au sens large du terme et développe en conséquence une réelle autonomie de jeu et de lecture. Les rythmes sont abordés avec des exemples variés issus de nombreux répertoires. En changeant ainsi les contextes, l'enfant dissocie les notions essentielles du rythme et du tempo qui lui est associé.
2. Les chapitres mélodiques ont pour vocation d'éveiller la vocalité et de développer l'écoute intérieure. Une attention toute particulière est donnée aux textes vocaux, issus notamment des répertoires traditionnels (chansons, comptines...).
La découverte de l'échelle musicale se fait en partant du La du diapason, dont on ne saurait trop encourager l'usage. La lecture se fait en lien direct avec le son : on doit entendre et chanter ce qui est lu. Nous proposons pour cela une écriture ludique constituée de cubes permettant de relier l'oeil à l'oreille de façon plus immédiate. Ne voulant pas bloquer l'enfant dans un seul système de lecture, nous proposons d'axer le travail autour de la lecture relative, qui permet d'être tout de suite à l'aise dans les clés les plus usuelles, tout en montrant l'importance du ressenti de l'échelle diatonique composée de tons et de demi-tons. A ce titre, l'éveil aux différentes modalités nous paraît essentiel - ainsi l'on trouvera nombre de textes issus du répertoire ancien, et grégorien en particulier. Partant de la construction de la portée, ligne par ligne, nous pensons aider l'enfant à se familiariser avec les hauteurs et à comprendre et mieux maîtriser la construction de l'écriture musicale.
La conscience des intervalles est éveillée par la technique de la 'note imaginaire', qui permet à l'élève de construire l'écart entre les notes, de fixer les hauteurs et de développer une empreinte sonore préalable à l'acte vocal comme à l'acte instrumental.
Des travaux d'écriture sont d'ailleurs proposés tout le long de l'ouvrage : petites dictées, écriture en clés de Sol et de Fa, transpositions... L'oreille harmonique est aussi développée par des jeux autour des cadences qui représentent la ponctuation du langage tonal. Il en va de même pour la conscience des timbres instrumentaux.
'Le solfège proprement dit consiste à chanter en nommant les notes et en battant la mesure', écrivait Albert Lavignac ()2. Bien qu'un peu réductrice, cette phrase démontre que la question d'un solfège relié directement à la musique se posait déjà au XIXe siècle, reprenant aussi les idées pédagogiques déjà présentes dès la Renaissance. Nous avons souhaité inclure dans l'ouvrage les données théoriques essentielles, tout en les reliant directement à l'événement sonore. Ainsi, elles prennent du sens et la théorie devient vraiment 'musicale'.
Fruit de notre expérience, de l'étude des courants pédagogiques et d'une recherche de répertoires tant variés qu'appropriés, L'Ouverture à la musique propose au professeur et à l'élève, enfant ou adulte, de débuter son apprentissage musical en se plongeant d'emblée dans la matière sonore, en goûtant au plaisir de la découverte et de l'expérimentation.

Je suis honoré d'écrire quelques mots à propos d'un des plus grands pianistes, Kenny Barron. Il a été une figure importante de la scène New Yorkaise durant quarante ans et il fait partie de l'élite des pianistes de jazz dans le monde.
J'ai tout d'abord rencontré Mr Barron en 1977 dans un haut lieu du duo piano/basse, au Bradley's, dans Greenwich Village. Je l'ai entendu à Cincinnati (dans la ville où j'habitais) en 1974 avec le Quartette de Yusef Lateef et fus très impressionné. Au Bradley's, il était chaleureux et a été très encourageant avec moi, pianiste de 21 ans récemment arrivé à Big Apple (New York). Le moment venu, il me laissa m'asseoir avec son bassiste, le grand Buster Williams - ce fut un réel plaisir.
Lorsque j'ai commencé à réaliser des CD pour le bénéfice de Classical Action : Performing Arts Against AIDS, dans le début des années 90, je lui ai demandé de participer au second enregistrement Fred Hersch and Friends : The Duo Album en jouant un duo avec moi. Cette organisation collecte des fonds vraiment nécessaires pour les services de personnes atteintes du Sida et la prévention. Kenny, sans attendre, donna de son temps et joua magnifiquement. Il apparaît aussi sur le disque suivant, The Richard Rodgers Centennial Solo Jazz Piano Album .
Nous avons également joué à deux pianos à New York au Town Hall et deux fois au Jazz Standard, pour mon plus grand plaisir. C'est un partenaire merveilleux et compréhensif, disposé à tout essayer. Bien qu'il soit difficile de l'identifier, et je ne veux le mettre dans aucune sorte de boîtes, je perçois son style comme étant en grande partie influencé par McCoy Tyner (les lignes longues et claires) et Tommy Flanagan (le phrasé et l'utilisation de l'espace). Il a réussi à obtenir le statut rare de maître du jazz par la vertu de sa longévité, sa profondeur et sa musicalité. Nous partageons tous les deux une passion pour la musique de Monk, Strayhorn et de l'American Popular Songbook et nous sommes tous les deux de grands partisans de l'idée de rendre ce que nous avons absorbé en enseignant aux jeunes pianistes et en devenant leurs mentors.
En plus, il a une personnalité chaleureuse et engageante - il est d'un grand soutien, a un grand sens de l'humour et une attitude posée. Je suis très heureux que ce livre puisse apporter un éclairage sur le parcours du pianiste Kenny Barron - je suis sûr que cela sera d'une grande valeur musicale et historique pour tous ceux qui suivent l'évolution du piano jazz. / Jazz / Partition /
