Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) began his musical life as a piano prodigy in Barcelona...(+)
Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) began his musical life as a piano prodigy in Barcelona at the age of four and it is as a prolific composer of solo works for the pianoforte that we must celebrate him most. This Dover edition presents two of Albeniz' best known works in authoritative editions: the piano suite Iberia generally considered to be his masterpiece; and the album leaves Espana which contain the 'Tango' his most popular individual work. Iberia is a collection of twelve musical scenes of Spanish life principally Andalusian written between 1906 and 1909. Its brilliant and complex character is suffused with the rhythms and harmonies of Spanish popular music to which Albenizturned for inspiration in the last years of his life. Espana an earlier work first published in 1890 is made up of six piano pieces that subtly reflect the influences of the piano literature of the 19th century-salon and like Iberia the harmony and style of Impressionism which Albeniz undeniably helped to establish.

The Spanish composer and pianist Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) was one of the leading members of the Nationalist school that dominated Spanish music at the turn of the last century. He left two pieces unfinished at the time of his death: Azulejos was completed by Enrique Granados while Navarra was finished by Albéniz?s pupil the French composer Déodat de Séverac (1872-1921) and published in 1912. It was originally intended to form part of the Iberia Suite but the composer gave up on it after declaring it to be 'shamelessly cheap'. Nevertheless this work for solo Piano remains a worthwhile addition to therepertoire.

The young Isaac Albeniz published Recuerdos de Viaje for solo Piano in 1887 including this movement Puerta de Tierra which was also published as ‘Andalucia’. It is a bolero a traditional dance movement that was frequently performed in theatres in Cadiz – the site of the Puerta de Tierra – at the time that Albeniz was writing this piece. The single movement is full of Iberian fire and virtuosic passages with repeating triplet figures in Spanish style typical of Albeniz. In its Piano form this piece has been used as a very effective encore and it may well find a home as the finale of a Trumpet recital. Spanish composer and pianist Isaac Albeniz (1860 -1909) was one of Spain’s foremost musicians a world-renowned soloist contributing to the rebirth of Spanish musical nationalism and gaining international recognition for the music of Spain.
