Italian-American composer and librettist Gian Carlo Menotti composed his first opera in English, The Old Maid and the Thief, in 1939. It was commissioned by NBC as a radio opera (to be performed on air) and was premiered by the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Years later, Menotti adapted a theme from the opera's third scene, transforming and expanding it into an advanced two-movement work for solo piano. The first movement is a lyrical and emotive ricercare, which contains contrapuntal writing, elaborate flourishes, and flamboyant improvisatory gestures. By contrast, the second-movement toccata unfolds in steady, 16th-note perpetual motion with moments of musical humor combined with brilliant pianistic display. The concise work, approximately seven minutes in length, is often used in competitions and recitals. This edition contains helpful fingering and pedaling suggestions, as well as a discussion of form and a brief synopsis of the original opera. / Piano

This original concert overture is manageable by young musicians, yet it has elements that are relevant to much more challenging literature. Written in a standard overture form, the catchy melodies and rhythms will be sure to delight audiences while keeping the players fully engaged. A brief lyrical interlude adds variety and a moment of repose before returning to the more energized main theme. This is an outstanding choice for a spring concert or a first band festival/contest experience.(2:40) / Concert Band

Moving Parts is the music for Benjamin Millepied’s ballet of the same name. Scored for Violin Clarinet and Pipe Organ the piece is a series of rhythmic etudes. The slow movement is a very slow passacaglia with I hope unexpected lyrical melodies in the violin. After an extended Organ toccata built over a drone a brief slow movement creates a natural midpoint. The violin aggressively plucking builds up to form a canon with a clarinet and after a loud outburst from the organ the piece ends quietly. Moving Parts written in 2012 is dedicated to Benjamin and the Los Angeles Dance Project.

Par HODGES STEVE. Upon completion of an activity, an event, or other meaningful experiences, there is a time for reflection for what has been accomplished and what is to follow. This lyrical piece features a memorable melody that is presented by all sections of the band. These reflective presentations lead into a slightly faster minor section indicating the anticipation of plans for the future. The final presentation of the melody indicates a positive feeling of accomplishment and features a moving countermelody by the woodwinds leading to a quiet, contemplative ending. Nico Muhly's Step Team for 9 players. Full score.'Stepping is a form of almost militaristic dancing involving the entire body as well as the voice. The routines are highly choreographed and precise but maintain an expressive freedom that comes out of the energy required to pull off the moves. In writing this piece for the Chicago Symphony MusicNOW I wanted to avoid too much delicate pointillistic writing and instead focused on making the nine players function as one team with a singular rhythmic agenda. Whenever the Chicago Symphony comes to New York I am always impressed with the massive steakhouse-style proportions of the brasssound so this score features the Bass Trombone as a guide for the harmonic and lyrical material. At a certain point in the piece the rhythmic unisons begin to break down and individual players or groups of players start slowing down or speeding up against the pulse. The Bass Trombone works as a unifying element here announcing the changes between sections. Some scattered pulses ensue and the brass section continuously shepherds the other instruments back into line. Step Team ends with a duet between the Bass Trombone and the Piano with a series of ornaments from the other players.' - Nico MuhlyInstrumentation: Flute Bassoon Horn in F Tenor Trombone Bass Trombone Piano Violin Viola Cello

The sheet music for contemporary virtuoso composer Nico Muhly's So Many Things ...(+)
The sheet music for contemporary virtuoso composer Nico Muhly's So Many Things arranged for Mezzo-Soprano and Piano Accompaniment. So Many Things was commissioned by a number of institutions including The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association UC Berkeley and Carnegie Hall. Lasting around 15 minutes Muhly has set three poems to this wonderful music including a lengthy narrative poem by Joyce Carol Oates and two translations of C.F. Cavafy by Daniel Mendelsohn. Muhly has brilliantly managed to take the emotion of the words and replicate them through music creating an astonishingly movingaccompaniment that not only reflects the lyrical sentiment but complements it. He states that the Piano moves between skittish and ostinato relentless but often pausing for an effective break in the musical narrative. With drones and palindromes from the Piano the Voice leaps between intervals creating a dynamism that creates uncertainty rather than resolve much like the poetry.

Par WILLIAMS CHARLES. This haunting piano piece, from the 1947 movie, 'While I Live,' is the 'Urtext Edition' by composer, Charles Williams, and is similar to other piano solos of this era which display a grand, 'concerto' style. The main theme features a rolling arpeggiated left hand accompaniment under the lyrical melodic line of the right hand, ranging from whisper soft to dramatic, crashing fortissimos. There are contrasting sections such as the 'cantando' portion where left hand takes over melodic duties under delicately rolling right hand sixteenth note patterns. This is a dramatic, emotional concert piece that will be an enjoyable musical adventure for both pianist and audience. / Ensemble Music, Instrumental Music, Miscellaneous, / Répertoire / Piano

Par SCHUMANN ROBERT. Clara Wieck's sincerest wish was that her future husband, Robert Schumann, turn his extraordinary genius toward the larger and more challenging task of composing orchestral music. Confiding in her diary in 1839, just one year before her marriage, she explained that ; it would be best if he composed for Orchestra: his imagination cannot find sufficient scope in the Piano… In the years that followed their marriage Robert Schumann continued to devote much of his attention to Piano music, but he also found the time to comply with his beloved Clara's wish by creating a number of musical pieces composed specifically for Piano andOrchestra. Although Schumann 's genius is most in evidence in his masterful solo Piano compositions and superb lieder, his lively and provocative imagination manifests itself with equal aplomb in the works composed for Piano and Orchestra. The same compelling romantic and lyrical qualities that captivate lovers of Schumann 's Piano music are evident in these compositions. Three of his finest are presented here in full score, including the A Minor Piano Concerto, one of the most popular and frequently performed concertos ever written. All demonstrate his remarkably innovative approach to music, diverting substantially from the classic models of the day, and display his immense creativity as well as his warmth and sensitivity. Included in this collection of Schumann 's compositions for Piano and Orchestra are: Piano Concerto In A minor, Op. 54 (published 1846) Concertstuck, Op. 92 (Introduction and Allegro appassionato; published 1852) Introduction and Allegro, Op. 134 (published 1855) These three works by one of the greatest masters of romanticism will delight musicians, music lovers and students, as well as devotees of Schumann. | Anna Bolena Piano, Voix [Reduction] Ricordi
Vocal score based on the critical edition of the orchestral score edited by Paol...(+)
Vocal score based on the critical edition of the orchestral score edited by Paolo Fabbri, 2 volumes. Donizetti's Anna Bolena premiered at Milano's Teatro Carcano during Carnival season 1830-31 is considered the composer's first major success in serious opera, which brought him to the attention of all Europe. In terms of production, in Italy he was an anomaly, in that he remained actively involved in the evolution of his works and the performances of them, and went on making modifications to those works. Written expressly for the interpretative and vocal talents of great singers like Giuditta Pasta and Giovan Battista Rubini, the historically-based 'lyrical tragedy? by librettist Felice Romani is a classic of Lombard Romanticism. The present reduction for voice and piano derives from the critical edition of the score, recently published in this catalog: is based on the autograph score, (housed in the Ricordi Archives in Milan), on the libretto for the premiere, on the first vocal scores printed editions (Lucca and Ricordi in Milan and Marquerie Frères in Paris) and additional manuscript scores with autograph additional notes (housed in Naples and Rome). This edition presents for the first time all the music composed by Donizetti, in particular the sections crossed out or replaced either immediately before or after the first performances. There is also a synthetic reconstruction of the birth of Anna Bolena, with a description of sources and a selection of the Critical Notes from the full score edition. / Voix Et Piano

Fauré?s piano works are of central importance within his compositional oeuvre. He dedicated his ?Ballade?, composed in 1879, to his teacher Camille Saint-Saëns. A Tear-A beautiful and poignant lament which is ideally suited to the double bass. Originally for cello this new edition returns to the cello version [Theme & Variations] adding an extended (but optional) piano introduction and demonstrates the dark and soulful colours of the solo double bass. Long flowing phrases allow the intermediate bassist to demonstrate both musical and technical accomplishment in an accessible range of the instrument. The soulful and wistful melody transcribes beautifully for double bass allowing the instrument to display its bel canto and lyrical capabilities. A three bar section towards the end of the piece is playable as written or anocatve higher giving bassists the opportunity to play high harmonics within a beautiful and evocative melody. This is an ideal study or recital work with its supportive and pulsing accompaniment and has been one of Recital Music's bestsellers since it was published. Une Larme is also available for solo double bass and string orchestra accompaniment - please contact the publishers for further details.
